Is it true that Jr was given a larger restrictor plate for that race? Heard this from a couple of different people who worked for teams. Seems a lot more likely because of the massive $$$ involved.
Easy to do with an ILLEGAL car. I didn't mind, because we needed a moment like that, but who are we kidding? That whole night was set up for him to win.
@@Mystic-l3r There's running up front, and then there's this particular race where Jr. brags about only running 7/8ths throttle to keep from pulling away from the pack, which was unheard of with this high-drag, wicker bill package. Benson and Blaney were both going for their first career wins and didn't even try to block Jr. "lOoKs LiKe tHeY'Re GonNA gIVe tEh OutSidE tO jOonYeR11!!1!!". Jimmy Spencer was spot on in criticizing this race, but much like Patrice O'Neal talking about Alex Jones with marbles, because Spencer is generally crazy, it's easy enough to handwave this away.

I’ve always believed those stories, even in the 80s/90s. It would be so easy for nascar to give out different size plates.
Jr could have won that race in a top fuel dragster and it would have passed post race inspection.
@@timg7627 talked w a guy in MB SC who was on of the pit crews. Swore on his life they handed out the special R/P each week as they chose. 🤷
