  • You can spend thousands on your car preparing for your first track day and install loads of parts from superchargers to calipers, but being “ready” is a state of mind. No experts or race cars here, just a guy who finally got over himself and out to a race track at SCCA’s track night in America.

    Great video. Most people don't realize that seat time and experience is the best mod you can do/have. You will learn exponentially more driving a slow car 10/10ths rather than driving a fast car 3/10ths. I have been tracking my car for years, and wished that I would have started off that way. Don't let your ego get the best of you, play by the rules, and most importantly have fun.

    I've been wanting to get to a track for 3 years now but have been super intimidated. This video definitely helped alleviate some of that. Thanks for taking us along with you.

    The most nervous was when I entered the track facilities and saw/heard cars flying past on the straight, but once I got to driving I was still alert but not nervous at all

    The title is good advice! And a well produced video with some valid thoughts on your first track day. I would suggest some others, though. You don't NEED a high HP, modded car for your first, second, or 100th track day. Modding the driver is the #1 most important thing. Get an instructor or at least a ride-along from someone in the advanced group to truly understand the lines, braking and acceleration points, and limits of your car. It is SO different from driving on the street. Don't think that a motorcycle helmet is suitable protection - it's meant for a single impact, not bouncing around against objects in the cabin. That said, at the speeds you would be going, your street legal car with good belts and airbags should really be sufficient. Don't drive with your window half open - full up or full down (your passenger window was part open in one session). Sunroof should really be closed as body parts which go out that way in a crash will probably get amputated. And if you got flagged for a bogus fuel leak, the clowns doing the unsafe passing should have been black flagged immediately. Not really impressed with the running of the event. But I'm glad you had a good experience. Hope you went back (in another car)!

    You were so right. I was building my car and had same thoughts , its not ready yet... Then I was looking for tips for my first track day, car setup, track rules and how to behave on a race track, and I came across this video of yours. All I can say is... you were so right and thank you :), you gave me confidence to go and drive.
    Also, doing only essential mods on your car for a first track day leaves you bunch of other mods you can try out on other track days.
    I had 4 track days so far, and I am keen on having more :P
    Its just like you said, we have nothing to prove, just drive, behave and have fun.

One suggestion I would make while you are still early in the process is to find an organization to run with that has proper instruction. Having an in-car coach as well as classroom time will help you to not solidify bad habits. NASA and BMW club have excellent programs.

      definitely didn't have that on, I don't even tend to use it in traffic in the summer much. Only theory anyone had that made sense was that it was most likely was a crack in the evap canister from being positively pressurized by the supercharger for years. I had evap related codes come up after the kraftwerks kit went on, and my gas mileage plummeted from my previous supercharger kit (cte).

They help you learn the track, follow up on what you learn in class and get you up to speed very quickly IF YOU LISTEN! Yes, I said class. Hey I love the video. Hell of an editing job. I want to make my 61 ford falcon track ready. The only thing left I can think of that I would need is a true seatbelt. I only have a lap belt, but considering it's age it is "road worthy". since I have never been in contact with a track i don't know the set rules and I don't want to show up and pay and then not be able to race. Thanks again man!

    • @MinuteRiceChannel
      @MinuteRiceChannel  7 лет назад +1

      That sounds like a rad car to take to a track, I hope you get to take it out soon! Also I'm sure even if the rules didn't formally state you needed more than a lap belt you'd be much safer working out a harness setup, without airbags you would be in for a nasty crash if you had one!

    SCCA Track night is the best
    I have a 2016 Mustang GT performance pack that handles track time very well! Ford did a great job with the brakes and cooling. Only issue was the rear diff. Oil gets too hot, and the only wait to solve that is to remove the 2 plugs on the cover, and install a cooler. Like the GT350 has (same diff cover)

    • @MinuteRiceChannel
      @MinuteRiceChannel  8 лет назад

      Thats too bad on the rear diff, but every car has it's weak point. I test drove a 2015 gt contemplating one before i bought my evo x last year, the modern GTs are very cool cars but in my rainy climate i was concerned about getting my money's worth in traction. You have any videos of your car? Thanks for watching!

    With covid restrictions doing my first trackday has been delayed a year, my biggest worry at the moment is my car has front disc & *rear drum* brakes ("warm hatch" life) so I'm worried whether the brakes will just crap the bed on the outlap let alone in a multi lap stint...
    it's my daily too and one that I plan to sell not too long from now so i'm not about to upgrade the entire braking system... (other than pads and fluid of course), i'll get into that when I get my mx-5 or brz :P
    So is it ok to do a track day on the standard brakes? I assume I should do small stints, literally one fast lap and then come in to cooldown (out-fast-in) or do I just feel it out and im not going to cause any lasting damage as long as I slow down the moment I feel the brakes start going spongy and pit to cool down for a while? (i expect somewhere in the middle is the answer so if anyone has some tips ill be greatful ^_^)
    it's hard to find info like this in my research as everyone just says "get a big brake kit!" but surely you can track a car with normal brakes so long as you know your limits right?...

    Glad you finally made it to the track, but running with an organization that doesn’t require point bys on straights the entire time means you should find a better group that is far more safety conscious. Also, try to learn to always keep your hands at 9-3 on the steering wheel. This quickly becomes essential if you need to recover from a spin. I would also highly recommend you do some autocrossing to learn car control under extremely safe conditions. Good luck.

    Great video intro to track days. A little ironic that a guy with a FI Civic is criticizing a BRZ for being nimble but underpowered. :D
    Any chance (unlikely) you were running AC and flag guy saw condensate?

    • @MinuteRiceChannel
      @MinuteRiceChannel  7 лет назад +2

      AC was definitely not on since I don't even use it during most of the year, I believe they were seeing an EVAP system leak, but my EVAP system was disable in flashpro so it wasn't throwing codes? Never found out for sure, but that was my best guess: the car has since been sold. I think the reason I point out that 86s are slow is just because they don't look slow and when you drive them in twisties they don't feel slow, but roll race someone and you remember... yeah they're slow as hell. The civics are sporty economy cars, the 86s are slow sports cars.

    Great video, while there are a few things I may not agree with being a veteran to track days... the main point of the video was great. So many people think they need a racecar for they're first track day when in reality it only needs to be reliable. Just get out there and start tracking!
    Also Track Night In America is known to be a shit show with no in car instructors. Basically newbs that have never done a track day all let loose at the same time with no real consequences of doing dumb shit on track. If you do another track day I recommend doing an event with NASA, they have in car instructors as well as classroom sessions. Much more structured and more emphasis on safety. Happy motoring

      Thanks for commenting and watching! I have a friend that does Porsche and Audi club days that has told me the same thing. I definitely wasn't impressed with the organization of the event, but I really appreciated not having to take a full day off work and shell out $3-400 for an event. I'll be trying some other events here soon and posting up about those as well!

    Good video and I liked your approach to people saying their car is not "track ready". As far as your Track Night in America, yeah that is another reason I can't stand the SCCA, it's almost like the union. Anyway give Auto Interests a look see, they put together a nice program because this is what they specialize in. The also have a car control course at each event. Prices are what you'd expect for a normal track day, but if you sign up early you can get the days cheaper.

      My struggle is supporting my channel or supporting my cars... I get a few grand to play with and it would almost always be better used on more gear than more parts and driving. I'm hopeful to get on track again in August this year with my Evo X but we'll see what life has in store for me!

    • @MinuteRiceChannel
      @MinuteRiceChannel  5 лет назад

      First of all thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed it! In short I sold the Civic because I make bad financial choices and always think the grass is greener on the other side! This Civic was for a short while in residence with my 07 WRX wagon AND a '13 Evo X I bought when I paid off the Civic, but I could barely afford to maintain all of them and it was defeating having all these great cars and not being able to maintain them. For a while I had the WRX and Evo but starting to freelance shoot video stole way too much money from me so now I have an Evo X and 2011 Scion xB to haul crap and drive to and from Seattle when I shoot for Stancewars Mike! I think if I could do it again I'd probably have kept this Si with the CT-E kit and a motorcycle on the side. It was a perfect mixture of quick and cheap! Oh well, I love the X, but damn it's spendy and keeps breaking left and right!

      The best reasoning I heard was from Vit Viper @ Vittuned (my tuner) he said he thought the pressure from the SC forced its way back to the Evap canister and had pressurized it, possibly causing a split that would throw the occasional gas cap CEL and maybe leak some gas under WOT. I have sold this car since, but that was the best explanation I ever heard of what might have been happening.

    • @MinuteRiceChannel
      @MinuteRiceChannel  7 лет назад +1

      While I owned the car, no. A friend made a very valid suggestion after the fact though that my EVAP box may have been separating from being pressurized by the supercharger and been leaking drops of fuel under boost? That was the best explanation I ever formed, but I never witnessed it leaking anything and none of my friends or driving buddies ever did either!

    I have a question. Is it true that automakers of any kind would void your warranty if say you buy their brand new sports car (BMWs, Porsches, Subaru STIs, etc.) and then take it to the Track or AutoX it, even if you don't modify your car and keep it stock. Or would you take those claims as nothing more but a grain of salt? If this is true, then I feel that this is a rather sensitive topic that needs to give more insight and awareness of what consumers are going to experience, especially when they considered taking their brand new sports car to the track or autoX events for the first time when some of these track-ready cars are truly designed for which doesn't even make sense and it kind of concerns me.

    • @MinuteRiceChannel
      @MinuteRiceChannel  6 лет назад +1

      Hey there, that's a very real concern, and I should preface my comment with the fact that I'm not expert and you shouldn't take any legal advice from me! I have heard of a warranty being voided for just about everything over the years, and I think that you always roll the dice when you use your car how you want to with one. I have heard of people being told their car failed from "abuse" and voiding a warranty claim when the driver swears they never do anything but drive it on the road, and gently at that. I think from what I've seen that buying your car form a reasonable dealership is more important than how you choose to use your vehicle. Some dealerships seem to avoid warranty work like the plague and fight virtually any warranty repair work with claims of abuse, which are especially easy to toss around on sports cars. My personal ethos has always been to just buy cheaper used cars with no warranty and expect to pay for repairs out of pocket, so my first hand experience is null. If anything I would recommend discussing your potential uses of your car with your dealership and, if possible get in writing that driving a car on a race track doesn't constitute "abuse" under your warranty. In all likelihood though, your warranty probably already has a section covering competition or off road use written into it somewhere. Good luck, and report back if you have any breakthroughs! I'm sure others would like to hear about it!

    • @ProjectSun91
      @ProjectSun91 6 лет назад +1

      Hi, thanks for the reply! Unfortunately, I don't have a "sport/performance car" of any sort at this moment, hence why I'm asking these sort of questions first is not only due to monetary issue, but certain policies like the warranty claims that each automakers or dealerships have that worries me. I know I shouldn't take legal advice from you as you said. However, it doesn't hurt that I would tell one of the reps from the dealership or their service department about my potential use for the sports car, let's say I purchase the BMW M2, Subaru WRX STI, or the Toyota 86 and let them know that I'm interested in taking these cars to the track or AutoX and still honor my warranty and have some sort of legal consultant and negotiation skills or some kind of bargain to help me get through this to make those plans possible. Find ways to convince them on how the track is considered a safe and secure environment that let's people have their free-will to test their brand new sports car to the limits that they've earned hard-money on and how it's going to help promote their brand and products which could be a bonus. At least, that's how I think.
      P.S I would also like to hear from others from experience as well about their warranty claims when taking their cars to the Track or AutoX. And if possible, can you make a video about warranty claims and track issues for everyone to hear and share? That would be appreciated.

    • @MinuteRiceChannel
      @MinuteRiceChannel  6 лет назад +1

      Your post actually had me jotting down this subject as a potential episode, I'd like to try and compose something, but I'll have to work on gathering interviewees and of course scheduling all of it. I don't think I'll have time for it too soon, but I have added it to my list of episode ideas! As for convincing a dealership or service department I think you should probably just find one that doesn't disagree with you that the car you buy can be used on track with warranty. Convincing someone is difficult, and even if you did there's no guarantee that you'll be dealing with that exact same employee when you have to make a warranty claim, or that they even work there anymore!

    PIR! Best city park in the lower 48!! I would add for the few other people seeing this for the first time, go to motorsportsreg.com, start with car control clinic in left side menu. Hopefully you have clubs near you that will give you basic instruction. Track insurance not necessary as with me( or my colleagues) in the right seat,we will keep you on track . Beware Track Nite in America doesn't always provide instructor, You have to ask. If no instructor, do basic car control clinic. That's all for now. Grandpa Bob

    • @MinuteRiceChannel
      @MinuteRiceChannel  6 лет назад

      Sheesh, yeah I'm expecting the Evo to absolutely throw back gasoline at a track day. Stock around town it was getting 15-20 mpg with a number of exhaust leaks, with an MHI 18k and full intake and exhaust it's actually improved, but only to 18-22. I'd love to get an E85 tune and a new clutch before trying to take it out on track, but we'll see. Buying camera gear absolutely cleaned my clock out this year!

      Yeah I've been enjoying tinkering with cars built with turbos a bit more than bolting them onto an N/A platform (my WRX or the Evo). I know there's plenty of great kits out there for Hondas and BRZs and stuff, but most kits are only as good as the installer, which was me, at like 22 y/o.... What you drive now?

      It doesn't have a rear mount tank. After I sold the car my tuner and I had lunch and I mentioned it. He said he was pretty sure that the EVAP box had separated or cracked from the boost I was accidentally sending it via the supercharger, had I put a check valve it it might not have been a problem!
