Charli's a genius!! Party 4 u is a simple but very relatable situation: doing something special for someone that doesn't even show up for you. With its recent tiktok fame, people have shared what the song's different parts mean to them, and charli talks about how that last verse meaning "this is actually the moment you realize that one person isn't ever coming to your party so you stand in the middle of the room, tears briefly fill your eyes but then you wipe them away, pretend you’re ok and proceed to get unbelievably fcked up and then spend the next week feeling completely ashamed of yourself xx" This made me think that this was going to be the pivotal theme of this MV when she announced it, where there's a party but charli is shown being crushed and upset in the moment.
Instead, true to Charli's form, she directed an epilogue to party 4 u. The video is not about what she did and what she created for someone who didn't show up for her; it is about her shame and her hate for what she became. It's a hangover while still being drunk and high. It's the shakes and the headache and the harsh light. It's hating your surroundings, your outfit, and the clarity that comes with starting to sober up.
And then she sets fire to the billboard of herself (a very heavy handed metaphor for self-destruction) and the eyes remain; an incredibly intentional nod to The Great Gatsby, the most popular parallel for Party 4 u!
Party 4 u is such a raw and vulnerable song, and charli xcx painted a black coat of fresh paint over it with this music video. She's so incredible!

HIFN deserves better. This whole album is amazing, raw and vulnerable. This is the blue print for Brat and Charli's whole music. I listened to this album when I was 10 in 2020 and now I'm 15 and this album has shaped me into who I am today.

I just remember when he and me had a conversation about which song do we relate the most as of the moment few months ago, and i told him this song because i feel like i’m so distant to him.

i honestly love the symbolism in this song,
especially when she defaces her billboard poster, its such an artistic way to show that you're losing or destroying yourself in the process just for trying to get the attention of someone that wont even give you the time of day, doing almost anything.
and when she burns it, its a literal way to say "im burnt out."
since this song revolves around wanting attention from someone, i would also like to point out she does 3 tactics to do this :
- she "threw a party" (stated in the lyrics) for her loved one, since throwing lavish parties are a way to get someones attention
- crying usually gets their attention (also stated in the lyrics, specifically verse 2), she just wants their affection.
- and undressing herself/leaving herself bare, (seen in the music video AND in the lyrics), since showing skin is also another tactic to get someones attention
