Dean Martin was such a smooth crooner with a nice relaxing voice. He was nicknamed "The King of Cool". This is before auto tuning. Artists had to be really able to sing. And the lyrics were clean, romantic & really meant something. He has a huge library of great songs such as "Ain't That A Kick In The Head?", "Memories Are Made Of This", "That's Amore", "Everybody Loves Somebody", "You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You", "Sway", "Volare" etc. Dean Martin was also part of the famous Rat Pack in the 60's along with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. & others.

Wonderful crooner. He always sang, even when paired with comedian sidekick Jerry Lewis. Check out his signature song "Everybody Loves Somebody" which knocked the Beatles out of the #1 spot in August of 1964. Also a must is his classic "That's Amore" as well as his '50s #1 hit "Memories Are Made of This."

Dean was one of the best crooners around. He had a very relaxed style of singing and the drinking was part of the act. He and Jerry Lewis used to be a comedy/singing act and made several movies together. When the pair broke up, everyone wondered what would happen to Dean because he played the straight man in the movies. He ended up having a huge career, with hits through the 40's, 50's and 60's. He then had a huge variety show that showed in the United States throughout the 60's and 70's. In the show he perpetuated the drinking and carousing persona and it was hugely popular. He made a bunch of records, and some of them were Country, but he was better known for his smooth crooning and was very popular with the ladies.

This song came out in 1967. He started out with Jerry Lewis as a comedy act in 1946. Martin's first bit hit was "That's Amore" in 1953. His song "Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime" became his signature tune.

Dean was called The King of Cool . . . a title bestowed upon him by none other than Elvis Presley! Dean was also one of the greatest & most entertaining performers of the 20th century. He wasn't the best of singers, but he had a wonderful way with a song. He was also one of the best comedians around, and he was an accomplished actor. In his career, Dean managed to do what few others could -- he was a big hit on radio, in nightclubs, on television, & in the movies. That's Amore is a wonderful song you should listen to. Everybody Loves Somebody is a beautiful ballad & his signature song. Ain't That A Kick In The Head is lots of fun. So, so many, many more, but he's a character you'll enjoy getting to know. Playing drunk was all part of his delightfully lovable persona. Live videos of him on stage are lots of fun, but the studio versions of his songs will give you the best take on his most endearing voice.

Dean Martin had his own TV variety show in the 60's. He was, of course, already a huge singing sensation and movie star. He was the straight man in the Martin and Lewis comedy duo. He also was in a BUNCH of movies including the Matt Helm spy spoof films and numerous Westerns. To me, his greatest gift was his voice. Check out songs like "That's Amore", "Ain't That a Kick in the Head", "Everybody Loves Somebody", or "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You."

I grew up watching that show. Typical of variety shows of the era, and Dean's public persona, he always acted half drunk and leered at his regular backup singing/dancing troupe, The Golddiggers (always in a funny rather than creepy way). When it came to him singing alone, he was wonderful. When he sang with a guest, they sometimes played it for laughs at the beginning, then finished the song as a great duet. There is a great one on RUclips with Lainie Kazan (the mother from My Big Fat Greek Wedding) as a young woman. ruclips.net/video/lprX0sMEdSM/видео.html

I believe he was not actually a drinker at all - it was just a label he put on himself for laughs . I don't this song was the root of all that - he just got the habit of associating himself with the "drunk act", and songs like this fed into that persona. He was a great singer too ! My favorite is "Everybody loves somebody Sometime" .

He had that drunk act, and joked and sang about it, but apparently he was disciplined about his drinking. Jerry Lewis insisted that it was always apple juice he was holding onstage. It was the cigarettes that did him in.
It wasn't until his son Dino died that Dean let himself go, and supposedly became reclusive and alcoholic.

    • @thomastimlin1724
      @thomastimlin1724 2 года назад +4

@@bengilbert7655 Yes from what i can tell I would agree. His daughter also said so in interviews and books. The reason in his retirement he fell apart was the death of his son. However I am not saying here that he was a saint or didn't drink, just not onstage or his TV shows. From what I have seen he was also a smoker. That part was an act...after all none of us followed him around 24/7, so how would one know either way? Let's see the autopsy report folks if we are going to do research.

Not sure what the source of information is : "The death of his son Dino in an air crash in 1987 left Martin suffering from depression. ... As part of his image as a carefree drunk, Martin had been habitually seen performing with a lit cigarette in hand, and he was indeed a heavy smoker. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1993 and died two years later .May 16, 2017."

Oh Harri! How can you never have heard this smoothest of crooners before! Dean has always been a fantastic singer - it's those Italian genes 😊. He actually wasn't much of a drinker; that was just part of his laid back persona. Dean entered our lives as one half of the Jerry Lewis/Dean Martin comedy act on the big screen - Dean was the straight man - and he sang back then. When the duo went their seperate ways Dean really came into his own as a singer and actor as well as being best friends with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jnr, Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop - AKA The Rat Pack. All entertainers and A-list showbiz pals. You really need to hear Dean sing "That's Amore"; the song he's really famous for and which always gets the ladies swooning!

Dean Martin was a very famous singer. His 1963 hit "Everybody Loves Somebody" was such a big hit it actually knocked the Beatles out of the number 1 position on the charts. Dean was a crooner in the same vein as Frank Sinatra, but he also liked country music and put out a few country music styled albums which did well. Dean Martin started to sing in night clubs in the 30s during WWII. His first record was released in 1947 which was “Which Way Did My Heart Go.” And the B side was “All of me.” His biggest hits include; Memories are Made of This, That’s Amore and most famously “Everybody Loves Somebody.” Which beat the Beatles off the charts in 1965. The phrase “Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime.” is actually engraved on his grave. His final song was released in 1985 “L.A is my Home.” Which was used for the T.V show Half Nelson starring Joe Pesci.

He was a total pro. He sang for a living from 16. He had over a two octave range and his key change transitions were perfect. He never lost pitch and like Frank Sinatra, and unlike Bing Crosby, he would turn up at recording sessions and lay down a song in one take. They rarely had to do it over. He was easy to work with, was always on time and the whole drinking thing was a gimmick that people loved. Watch any of his TV shows, they are all recorded live and he never disappoints.

Dean is a great singer. If you get a chance you should check out his tv show “the Dean Martin Show”. Episodes are on RUclips.
He never rehearsed a singer time during the whole run of the show.

Awesome song Harri...one of my favorites. Dean was a great singer before he ever starred in any tv or movies.

There was a commercial on TV in the early 60's for Italian Swiss Colony Wine (actually from California). The tag line was a man saying "that little old winemaker me". I believe this song used that line, and people hearing it would have related it to the ad.

Dean STARTED out as a crooner! He is actually my favorite crooner (over Bing and even SINATRA) Then he teamed out with Jerry Lewis and became the biggest thing in this country for 10 years! After he broke away from Jerry he went on to be a credible actor and have the best T.V. variety show for years. (and of course became a main part of the Rat Pack with Frank) According to what I have read HE really did not drink that much BUT used that aspect to be more humorous. Many times (according to what I have learned) those glasses in his hand had NO alcohol in them.. sometimes ice tea or something that LOOKED like alcohol just to make the impression for the show. I would suggest songs like "Memories are Made of This" or Volare" OR his Christmas songs (Marshmallow World or Baby It's Cold out side) To see HE was a Great singer!

"Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime" is a good Dean Martin song.
His nickname was Dino. Frank's was old blue eyes.

Dean Martin started out as a popular singer, just like Sinatra, and Hollywood began putting them in movies or tv shows, to cash in on their popularity. Elvis was no actor, but he made about 5 or 6 movies in the late 50s and early 60s. Same with Sinatra, and others. Just like Frank Sinatra, these guys weren't really actors, but Hollywood had a history of doing this. Martin and Jerry Lewis were a comedy team, but that wasn't Dean Martin's primary talent, it was his great singing voice, that was the vehicle that gave him those other opportunities. I like that you sprinkle in some of the older artists that were huge stars.
    Thanks, Harri

Dean was a comedian, actor, singer, had his own variety show. The drinks were a prop, he wasn't a heavy drinker as he was protrade. He and the Rat Pack starred in Ocean 11 movies.

I always like Dean Martin. I used to watch the Dean Martin show all the time. He could talk and sing like he sounded a little drunk. His song, Everybody loves somebody sometime. Kind of sounds that way. You should listen to it. Personally, I think almost all songs are better on the recording, except for Elvis. I'm not a huge fan of live. Some songs you miss out so much that's on the record that's not live especially with Simon and Garfunkel. Other times, live is best, like from a movie.

Check out his show The Dean Martin Show. There should be more tv shows that showcase music from his era so the young can hear what real music is in those times there was no need for swearing it was just pure and clean beautiful music.

I believe the drinking was just a stage thing for his image. In fact, I have read that he was a tame, family oriented teetotaler! Great reaction 🌺✌️

If you're surprised at his singing and liked it, try some Robert Mitchum, he has an excellent voice, check out "The Ballad of Thunder Road".

He could sing any type of music...he had 3 stars in the sidewalk in California..1 for his tv variety show and one for his movie career and of course 1 for his singing. He was know as the king of cool... Elvis Presley was the one who gave him the title King of Cool. The drink in his hand was really a act.,,it was usually apple cider in the glass.
