This match is a great example of Conchita's exceptional ball control. It's what always impressed me most about her game. She could land the ball within inches of where she wanted to no matter where she was on the court. Such a pleasure to watch. I only wish she had been more aggressive in her career... she would have had more slam titles.

This was such a great display of smart clay court tennis from Martinez. The point at 3:47 is a perfect example.

Conchita used to be a nightmare for Lindsay, even more on clay. If I remember correctly, Davenport never defeated Conchita on red clay, and just one on green clay.

Before Lindsay lost some weight and built up the confidence in 1998, Conchita’s games always troubled her, especially her low-bounced slices and high top spins. Back then, Conchita had winning records against Lindsay on all surfaces, grass, hard court, indoor carpet, not to mention clay. The dominance started to switch sides in 1999. Since then, Conchita had only one win in 2003 French Open, with Lindsay retired on 2nd set. Other matches were relatively one-sided easy wins for Lindsay.

@@JacquesHsu Agreed, prior to 1998, Lindsay actually played better against Graf and Seles since the power hitting style and rhythm and shorter points suited her better. Martinez and Sanchez Vicario both could tire Lindsay out with prolonged rallies and hurt her confidence (though Lindsay did beat Sanchez Vicario at the 96 Olympics).
And 1996 Conchita was still near the peak of her game, she won Rome four years in a row and was basically the second or third best clay courter in the world (alongside Graf and Sanchez Vicario)
