    Younger viewers would have no idea how hyped this game was. Along with rise of the robots this was one of the most (over)hyped games in the mid 90s.

      DeckyStrikesBack except this game was actually playable. The only way to beat rise of the robots was to jumpkick them til the timer ran out. Sometimes you won but more times than not you just won on keeping health

      Same here! Me & my 'boy Myron at the time when we were both in 3rd-Grade played each-other after school one time, & he quoted "The Blob's" character, "cut in half!" move that it did, at various times on the playground the very next day. One of the best times in my life.

    The best part about this game is the intro song! "Clay Fighter...Clay, Clay Fighter. Come and fight 'em if you dare...OOOOO! Clay Fighter...Clay, Clay Fighter. Hit 'em, smack 'em, they don't care!"

    You forgot to mention the sheer amount of voice samples in this game. I remember being blown away by the intro song. I can’t think of another game that had as many voice samples as this game during the 16 bit era.

    This take on the game and series is absolutely spot-on. I remember getting so excited as I read about it in anticipation of another fighting game that took so long to develop and had next level graphics. Then when it finally came out, I got bored with the gameplay, and just played every character to see each animation and special moves. Then I was done. Not a very rewarding gameplay experience, but glad I lived that time in video game history.

    If Clay Fighter 2 had kept the characters and just added the new ones to the roster, it would be pretty solid. The gameplay and flow on the second one is miles better IMO, I'd personally recommend that one.

    I remember renting this from Blockbuster more than once (and we were rarely allowed to rent games from Blockbuster, so it was always a grand occasion when that happened, and always a huge disappointment when we chose a stinker). I was probably 10 or 11 or so back then, and the clay characters REALLY stood out. This is a perfect example of an "at the time" game because while it doesn't look like anything special today, back then it looked amazing. The sprites were large and had a photorealistic quality to them, which you can see by how the characters show the lighting they were actually photographed in. Yeah, the lighting isn't accurate given the environment they're in, but that wasn't really a thing back then, and being able to see the lighting on the characters at all was kind of cool because it made them look more like real clay objects.
    Clayfighter was a lot more colorful than games like Mortal Kombat and a lot more creative than most other fighting games. As a kit, it was easy to appreciate the clay models despite their lack of animation frames, and it was easy to overlook the simple combat because, well, as a kid I wasn't very good at games anyway and we mostly just mashed buttons. I'll give it some credit, too, that I found a lot of the game quite funny as a kid. If I had owned Clayfighter, I probably would have played it a lot more and who knows, maybe I would hold it in higher esteem because of that. But I went back and tried to play it the other day, having not even seen it for over a decade, and while I still enjoyed some of the sprites, the game itself didn't appeal to me at all. I feel like this is how it goes with Clayfighter: I think about how I haven't played it in forever, so I decide to fire it up out of the blue just to get a taste and I turn it off in less than five minutes.

    I awaited this game so HARD back in 1993. My Dad finally got me a copy for Christmas, and I played the hell out of it, but in the back of my mind I couldn't help but be disappointed. I was let down by the hit detection, the cheap A.I. the stupid K.O. mechanic and the fact that you didn't get an ending unless you beat it on Hard which I learned completely by accident. There was absolutely NO indication that you had to beat it on Hard, it doesn't even tell you to try beating it on a higher difficulty it just ends if you beat it normally.
    You could also cheese and chip people to death using Blob's Buzzsaw attack, even if it's blocked, which led to a lot of real life fights with my brother. It was also possible to trap opponents in a throw loop by jump kicking, and when they block it, you could simply throw them and they'd never counter it. It was the only way I could beat it on Hard as a kid.
    But Clayfighter 2 was so much worse; reused palettes, inferior music to the original, it was just ugly and boring. I didn't hate Clayfighter 63 1/3 and the Sculptor's Cut, but it suffered from cheap A.I. and repetitive soundbytes -- even if it did feature several voiceacting legends.

    • @dongeraci8599
      @dongeraci8599 6 лет назад +7

      I respect your comment and "pain", but brother... there were loads of games with different endings that didn't tell you sh!t about completing it on a harder mode. Just sayin. It was the norm back then.

    • @thedrewdog
      @thedrewdog 6 лет назад +6

      Really? I remember games like Contra 3, Street Fighter etc. that would give you hell for not beating them on Hard or Hardest. What were some other games that left you in the dark?

    • @AmyraCarter
      @AmyraCarter 6 лет назад +2

      Not the Power Ranger games, from what I recall, lol
      I've not played many games myself that had a difficulty setting, that wouldn't tell the player to play on a harder difficulty in order to get the better ending...

    I only ever had the first Clayfighter game, but as someone who was obsessed with SSF2 and MK at the time I LOVED this game. I loved the goofy characters, the creative attacks, sound effects, the announcer, it was like a Claymation parody of my favorite genre. 25 years later I never play fighting games anymore except on handhelds because they’re good for killing 5 mins of dead time. But I’d love to play Clayfighter again for a nostalgia fix.

    I was head first into peak SNES/Sega craziness in 1993, and was a die-hard SNES fan. This game was hyped up for months prior to its release. The photos in the gaming magazines made it look amazing, and it did. For ten minutes. I bought it when it first came out, and to those complaining about the price of games today, I paid, if I'm not mistaken, around 60-70 dollars, including tax. That was a shitload of money for a 13 year old. OVer $100 in today's climate.
    I returned it 2 days later. Stop motion clay fighters is a novelty that wears off fast.

    Dang, I disagreed with the War of the Gems video and I have to disagree with this one because Clay Fighter 63 1/3 was really good. The combos in that game were on a Killer Instinct level and the sense of humor was bananas. For example, when certain characters got hit they'd shout random stuff out like The Blob saying "I'm a human beinggg" as he's being smacked around. The game also had Earth Worm Jim in it which made the game even funnier. The backgrounds to the stages were clever. Even the title of the game (Clay Fighter 63 1/3) was a pun on the Naked Gun 33 1/3 movies which were classic comedies. This game is definitely worth playing today as it's one of the most thoughtful fighting games on the N64.

    I remember this game being hyped up big time in gaming magazines. Nintendo Power even featured an expansive article about the making of the game. ClayFighter certainly looks unique, but I remember renting it as a kid and not really liking it. It definitely didn’t hold a candle to the Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat games of the time. It’s a shame too, because it was a cool spin on the fighting genre.

    I've played the entire series.
    ClayFighter and Tournament Edition are the best of the series.
    CF 2 took out the characters I liked best from the original so that was less fun for me.
    The N64 games...meh. Visually, decent looking but otherwise...
    Ultimately, I like the idea behind it (I actually like claymation so I suppose that's a boon most people wouldn't have towards it), but, like Guitar Hero: LIVE, the idea was poorly executed. That said, I still believe CF has value, still worth playing...

    As a teenager I bought this game from Best Buy thinking to myself wow I just bought a game that will be a rare and collectors item as the years go by. I remember loving the graphics and concept of clay animation at the time. As the years went on I replayed this game and couldn’t play more than 10 min on it. The move set and gameplay is very wonky with special moves coming out when they feel like it. Def did not stand the test of time but at the time this game was something special to me at least.

    The reason why they called it ClayFighter 63 1/3 instead of ClayFighter 64 is because it's the third ClayFighter game that came out for Nintendo's console.

    That background of the Elvis stage is certainly a thing.

    Hey? Earthworm Jim was on 63 1/3 or Sculpture Cut? Back in the days of emulation was a florish world to be explored... I downloaded the N64 Emulator and played the hell out of this game with firends. And my caracther pf choice(i enable cheats, not enough patience actually) was always Jim!

    This series does take me back. I'd personally say I liked clayfighter 2 better then 1 simply because it looked more polished and was a lot faster then the original. Plus nana man still makes me chuckle to this day when he throws that banana frisby and say NANA. But when I ended buying a snes about 8 years ago I immediately bought both clayfighter 1 and 2 for the nostalgia and I regrettably played it for 5 minutes then turned them off and havent touched them since. They just havent aged well at all. They just dont have that replay-ability the likes Street fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat does.

    When I reviewed the story lines in the games for my channel, I was SHOCKED at just how GOOD the Genesis version is. Stick with the Genesis version or Clay Fighter Tournament Edition!

    I think they should do a new version of the game where they don't have to use actual clay, but computer generated clay characters. Doing it this way will still have the classic Claymation feel, but give you more options to a move set that does require hours to make one move.

    You've done lots of lists of differences between genesis and snes. You should do a video where the two different ports are identical (relatively speaking).

    Yeah, I never was too crazy about these games. I actually first saw them in an ad for one of my old X-Force comics and it looked charming, but the simple combat as you mentioned just bored me to death. It's not a bad game, but in comparison to Mortal Kombat (2011) and Street Fighter Alpha 3, some of the best fighting games I ever played, it just doesn't compare today.

    I think EVO should end with a tournament with the top eight players or so, playing some old obscure fighting game like this.
