I like when things like bikes and components get fixed and revitalized instead of disposed. 👍
same here -- loved seeing that front derailleur working again and would have tried to use the frayed cable too. when i upgrade parts and the old ones are still usable i either hang onto them or donate to a local bike charity that's likely to use them.
Same! Being able to rebuild and reuse a part is one of thr best feelings of bicycle repair.
You are, in fact, the Bob Ross of bicycle repair videos. I'm sure that time constraints in the shop don't allow for you to get rid of rust using a product like Evap-o-rust, since it takes a few hours for it to work its' magic, but in my small time bike restoration world, it has helped me to make rusty parts look new. It's biodegradable and re-useable too. Your rusty, crusty front derailleur in this video inspired me to mention this. Your rants are my favorite parts of your videos. Keep 'em coming.
Cool compliment👍👍
Would one of those ultrasonic cleaners work? I've seen guys use them in videos and they just throw the parts in, let it sit overnight and the parts look rust free.
@@daniellarson3068in my experience with bike and lawnmower parts, absolutely! The product “evap-o-rust” is truly unbelievable. I use a coffee filter and a funnel to recycle it. It’s effectiveness does diminish but quite slowly
@@daniellarson3068a small ultrasonic bath tool (say from Harbor Freight) works so well. It takes time and sometimes additional effort but totally worth the investment
@@chesterossa Thanks - I'll keep that in mind. Next time I go to Menards I may pick some up.
I spent 9+ years as a bike mechanic for the St Louis Metropolitan Police Department. When I first got there we rode old Treks and some Cannondales. We switched to Volcanic in 2011 and ended up with 80+ Volcanic bikes. Very well made, in America, bikes. It’s great to see you restoring a patrol bike. Love your videos.
I feel really good when I see this guy save those forgotten abandoned bikes. That front shifter is a great example. No upgrades. If it's not working, he'll fix it. I would happily ride that beauty, after all that work.
BikeFarmer deserves way more subs! This channel is seriously the best. Super informative, and just enjoyable to watch!
First responders, a HUGE Thank-you to all these men and women👍👍
🍁⭐️
Your videos are so satisfying. I hope you know how happy you make the novice home bike mechanics.
Glad you like them!
Nice touch at the end. I learn something from each video. Thanks
Good job. Good talk. Good learning for us.
Your vids on the old TREK service bikes are my favorite. Mine came from the Philly PD for $200.00 and it looked like it had never been used. I converted it to a bike packing/rail trail bike. It's absolutely a fantastic bike and I'll take it to the grave with me. Your local viewers would do well to pick one of these up from your lot and enjoy it for a lifetime... Thanks Andy
You're what I love about Wisconsin. 🖖
Another win for the dork disk! Yee-haw!
You, Russ, & Lord Grant have really helped me to come full circle with how I think about & experience bikes and it’s much appreciated!
Seeing you work on bikes with Tri-Flo has something like a chicken soup comfort food effect.
Neat connection with the Packers on this one. God bless our EMTs!!!
Donald Driver put a foot in that bike’s rear triangle once, when it was left buried on a snowy 5 yard line. He kept playing, but the bike was “questionable” for the rest of the quarter.
Thanks for your vids! I volunteer at a local bike coop in Erie PA and I've been sharing your vids with the other volunteers. I think they, and I, are learning a lot from watching you! THANKS!!!!
I work security and do maintenance on the bikes. For bikes that are not ridden hard, it's crazy what can happen to them. Went through a phase of spokes breaking. I've come to the conclusion that everybody knows how to ride a bike but not everybody knows how to OPERATE a bike.
Great rescue! (Pun intended). 👍
Thanks!
Speaking of the algorithm; a nice radial laced front takes (28 spoke min) takes all that front end load with much more grace than a single cross lace. Also, easy to tune & true in the field after some mileage.
Love these refurb videos most out of all your videos. Maybe consider making a video running through each type of lube/degreaser and when you use each. Namely one step vs tri-flow, vs grease?
Loving the channel buddy!🇨🇦
When I worked at a shop in the early '80s we had a Phil Wood tool that would inject grease into freewheels and make them run silent. Quite a few racers came in to "silence" their bikes. In typing this I remembered that I have a tool called Freehub Buddy that injects grease into a freehub. Haven't used it in years.
I love the disc brakes on my Trek hybrid, and I’ll never ride a bike with rim brakes again. But for casual riding around town, rim brakes are fine.
Hey BikeFarmer! Great video. Please check the rear brake pads on this bike, they're installed backwards. They do have retaining pins to help retain the pad inserts, but should one come out during use, someone could get injured. Thanks!!
Nice catch!
Saw your interview on Path Less Pedaled and thought it was very good, really enjoyed it. Loved Bob Ross videos as well. I noticed the piano and your guitar hanging behind you. Maybe consider playing something sometime. I'm always impressed by folks who can play. As a kid, I took guitar lessons for six years and can barely play a few basic chords now. Also, liked your video about helmet shaming. Wind in your hair feels great sometimes.
Thank You for your support of First Responders, I knew you were a good guy !!
Hey bike farmer you inspired me to pickup a well built kids bike shop bike to flip or donate to our local bike coop once fixed up. Really satisfying getting things working nice smooth again. Been a great little learning project so far and can fund some of my own bike's projects.
Love your videos! And, you philosophical comments. I was a student in Madison in the 60s when politics was hot. Got around town on my old schwinn 10 speed.
amazing the shifters are as good as they are, being outside for so long.
Glad you put the dork disk on ❤
Hi Bikefarmer!
What a great vlog.
Recycling at its best.
I like how practical you are and how you give those good bikes another lease of life.
Watched from Manchester , UK.
Great provenance for a bike. This just commands respect.
Excellent craftsmanship! You are very detailed and cover all the bases. I’d buy one of your ‘redos’ in a minute. Love watching you work and am learning more too. Great commentary today, agree completely. Keep up the great work friend.
Great episode, had me LOL throughout.... dork disk... dork disk... dork disk... Aaah, there it is. That rust is like a cancer, comes back and spreads if you don't watch out. That front dereillur was in rough shape though. For my rusty allen bolts, and cosmetic rust I use a product called naval jelly (I know weird name) to remove it, then give a little spray of triflow. I am one of those with cable fray OCD, hate it when those things poke me... send me to the ER (hahaha). Cycling equivalent of getting jabbed with a catfish quill!! Great episode though, learned a few new things today.
I understand Crow Pie is pretty good a la mode!. I wouldn't know because I have NEVER screwed up anything in my entire 65 years! And if you believe that, I've got a really nice bridge I could sell you. Happy new cable day! Nice refurb here!
I also got some ocean front property for sale too😂😂😂
i actually think these police bikes are a good deal in general. lots of companies make them and the specs are always similar. beefy, versatile and built to be ridden all day. they might not be sexy but they can cover miles on bad terrain.
smith and wesson even made one. i actually came THIS close to buying a used one, it was a nice ride, black and white, even looked kinda cool, but i wasn't sure who actually made them so i passed.
wow got more than i bargained for in this tune up. thanks for this
Can confirm 26 inch slicks are good, I have 26 X 2 schwalbe marathons on mavic wheels, they are my favourite
My local PD in Rhode Island had Mercedes made mountain bikes ….never seen them before or since lol
I have been using a cone shaped brush in my drill for cleaning up cassettes and chainrings. You can get it in a set for car
detailing. Heavy enough to clean but soft enough not to scratch
Glad I found this channel! Great stuff!!
Im glad i found your channel because the first channels i found were berm peak with seth a GMBN tech? Might have the abbreviation mixed up but i digress nothing bad about their channels at all i learned some good stuff cause a lot of things apply to my situation but i definitely noticed they are in a different league then me they run very expensive bikes and i started to feel "inadequate" about my bike lol😂 but when i found your channel it was a relief because i was starting to feel like i needed things i really dont need i dont need disc breaks i dont need a new cassette or single chain ring everything about my bike is good enough for what i do some parts i will upgrade only because they will make my bike more comfortable and fun to ride i enjoy your rebuilds too because they taught me how to service some parts tht id otherwise go to the shop for like my v brakes and front derailer and my bike runs better then when i bought it now because of that i like your approach its practical and its real life shit for real life assholes like us who dont exactly need or want to spend thousands of dollars on a bike just to have fun and get around town
I have a soft spot for hybrids from this era.
Be A-Frayed.... Very A-Frayed!!!😊
Is that cable scary? Frayed so.
Nice saving parts thanks!
Dork Disk FTW!!
Nooooooo, thought I made it through the whole video with no dork disk. Friends don't let friends ride with dork disks. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great video for a friday afternoon at work. Thanks
I'm here for the disc dork and i'm not dissapointed
You work on stuff and do things to completion to give examples to those of us who may need to follow your example and do an industrial strength repair on a part because we may not have access to Newports, or out in the middle of the woods somewhere fixing something, or just don’t wanna buy a new part🎉❤😂
I have the same red mount on my bike stand too! I love it, its better than the big park tool arms.
Kroil is amazing! It’s my go to at the shop, I have to hide the can from the summer mechanics!
Down with fences!
I want those hubs on my bikes. I would prefer completely silent hubs.
Old e-recumbent rider here: sorry you won't work on my bike, but hey, I've learned a ton about maintaining my bike from you, so thanks! Interesting that everything you do to an uptight bike I can do to my recumbent! Could it be they are more the same than different?
You need a Charlie Berns colab with this bike. Go Packers.
Great commentary
Would an ultrasonic cleaner have worked to help the front derailleur?
great minds think alike
I read in a comment up above on the same video that he has one but he didn't use it on this cuz it only had moderate success🤙🏻🤙🏻
I just came upon your channel recently and have really enjoyed your videos. There are alot of channels that are all about high end mountain or road bikes. It's nice to see a channel that deals with bikes that the average person rides. Don't get me wrong I had a road bike but as I have gotten older I have gone to the hybrid fitness bike and now to the hybrid comfort. I do have a question. I just bought a Vereve 3 and it has disc brakes that just say " Power" on them. Do you know who makes those? Keep making the videos!
Just because they’re “generic” doesn’t mean they suck. Probably decent enough brakes if they’re on a Trek. Overkill for a hybrid anyway, but the industry has consumers convinced disc brakes are superior, so you get what you get and you don’t throw a fit!
Andy, The cable end is an aglet .I don’t see you regrease the rear derailleur cogs .
Nice video! Go Pack Go!
I was certain you would have went back and added in that Dork disc😂
So, this video popped up this morning. I guess it did me some good. Sometimes after the rusty cable was OK and before the political commentary, the Pavlov's dogs thing kicked in. Yeh - For some reason, I thought it would be a good idea to take a bike ride. So, I did. (I didn't drool.)
As I rode along, I thought about that rusty chain on the bicycle being reconditioned. It's not uncommon for many bikes to sit for months during the cold snowy Winter. The lube (or wax) dries up. Then they rust. Why don't they make those chains from stainless steel? I don't think they would cost an arm and a leg and probably last longer.
Thanks for the video.
I want those hubs!
You monster! 😂 Please don’t change, much. Thanks again for the content. I wish I was in a financial position to help more but I am a person of meager means. Serious question, does skipping “advertisements” affect your bottom line? I definitely skip ads when I can but I’ll stop if it makes a difference. Thanks for the content. It brings me time to unwind and relax
I wish upon a star, that I could true a wheel
What's the advances of one Stop .
Is a Lubercant a degreaser??
That fork has been tweaked. From the side view you can see the alignment to the head tube is off.
You’re the second person to say that. I’ll take a closer look!
Nice bike.
20:40 it's called a "mouse condom;" i thought you worked in a bike shop in the 90s!?!?
Hahahaha! Penis! Hahahaha!
@@bkefrmr we didn't call it a "penis;" we called it a mouse condom. B/c, well, look at it.
Man do I hate tripples. I don't know what it is about them but they always eat up my time. Shimano came out with a dirt cheap 46/30 double and whenever a friend wants me to build them something it's my go-to now. a 2x7 or 2x8 is great for most people, especially if it's one of those cheap megarange derailluers and cassette/freewheel.
The only time I hate a triple is on a full suspension bike. Otherwise they’re fairly simple once you’ve adjusted a few thousand!
great vid Bru, comment comment etc algo pump
What’s the Park Tool number for the Shimano hammer?
Oh man, straighten the hanger always scares me. Especially on these older frames without a replacable hanger.
question for yall. wouldn't a bath in an ultrasonic cleaner loosen all that rust for less work????
New chain is 20 bucks, a chain that rusted I don’t want to use. I wouldn’t trust it for sure.
@@xmateincI think he's talking about for the front derailleur
Would wider tires be better?
Lambeau Field must use a ton of road salt in their parking lots !!
Are those Well GO pedals? I used those for years with "rat traps"😁👍👍
Maybe put that deraillure in your ultrasonic with vinegar?
I did that with another one with moderate success
Yo, bike farmer. Got a dilemma. Would value your opinion. Bought a new GT Grade sport gravel bike, intending to do light touring. The factory cut the steerer too short on the carbon fork. I put a riser stem on and still can’t get perfectly fitted to how I would like, just a little more upright would be nice. I don’t trust the steerer tube extenders. Is there anything else to do other than buy a new uncut fork? Thanks, love the videos!
2310 that's how the cops can sneak up on U 😂😂😂
Brian Kefrmr: That cable will be fine
Me: Can't blame a guy for trying to minimize overhead/maximize profit
I'm not going to make any jokes about rescuing Packer's fans from their beer...oops
Ignoring maintenance on the suspension fork. I'm sensing a pattern.
Can we call you at the shop and get pricing?
Isnt the fork bent?!
Trek should use first responders whom the public reveres, in their adds, instead of racers who most "bike shop" customers cannot relate to.
GPG!
Holy cow are these silent hubs expensive 😳😲
Ever work on Raleigh bikes?
And Shimano Alvio😒. Shimano should bring back STX and STX-RC🤘🤘 "YEAH❗️"
Yep, the fork is bent. SHIEEEEEET!
Iam interested
Your have a much better macro-camera... 👍
👍
Not too hot, not too cold is actually from Goldilocks, not Cinderella, just saying.
That’s why it’s funny
If you can't fix it with a hammer, you can't fix it!
Video Syntheses: He FINALLY admits he's wrong! Yes! I'm right.
Eh....how did I get here ? 😮
The first!
What's your favorite/favourite frame material?
Go Detroit Lions!
