My SS collection doesn't have a single EU/USA game in it. Both the consoles I have are Japanese as well. I went PS1 in 1994 with a launch PS1 from Japan but by October 95 I went to the ECTS show in London and saw Sega Rally, Virtua Cop and Virtua Fighter 2 running at Sega HQ. As soon as I got home I was ringing stores for a Sega Saturn. I learned to love it, amazing times to be a gamer.

And while collecting for it hasn't been easy, I've been able to discover great exclusive games like Last Bronx, Mr. Bones, and Galaxy Fight! It's a system that's both nostalgic and still holds up today.

Saturn is still my favorite console, so for me DEF worth it, especially for people who enjoy 1990s arcade-style gaming. But buying legit copies for the high prices that some games go for these days? Probably not worth it. As I'm sure most people on here know, playing the JP-exclusive games (shmups, fighters, and many other quirky games) are what elevate the library. The western Saturn game catalog has a few dozen really good games (some quite special), but otherwise lacking. But with JP games included, I would say it's 100-200 really good games. I've collected 300 physical games for Saturn over the years, almost all of them either good or at least fun/interesting. Nights into Dreams is still in my top 5 all-time favorite games, and no console-launch game has ever made me swoon like Panzer Dragoon did: when I raced home, unwrapped everything, and popped that game into the Saturn on 5/11/95, it felt like a dream come true. I was like "This generation of games is going to be so awesome!!"

The only nostalgia I had of the Saturn was playing 2 games at my neighbor's house. Now I've played several games and I love it!
By the way, I will never consider a "morally grey area" when using backups of old games for discontinued consoles. If it's discontinued, you can no longer buy new games for that console that would put money in developer's pockets. It's THAT simple. The 3 only paths are emulators + ROMs (cheapest), original consoles + games (most expensive), or original console + ODE/Everdrives which for be is the best of both worlds, where you can experience the original hardware without spending tons of money (and space) for used games.

Outselling the Mega Drive in Japan is kinda underselling it a bit because the Mega Drive didn't sell well in Japan at all, it was a distant third behind the PC Engine and Super Famicom. But, you know what else the Saturn outsold in Japan? The N64, one of its main rivals. In fact, there were 3 times as many games released for the Saturn in total (the majority being Japanese exclusives) than there was for the N64 over its lifetime, just think about that for a moment. It goes to show you how badly Sega of America botched the North American launch of the system which kinda doomed it to fail from the start. Oh, and there wasn't a new exclusive mainline Sonic game for it. That's right, Sega's mascot never got a new mainline game on the Saturn, only some compilations of older games and a weird racing game called Sonic R. Another brilliant decision from Sega, there.

Listening to this makes me love my SS even more. Now I do realize I was lucky enough to get in on the ground floor, as the prices now really do beg the value question. I know I bought the PS1 with pennies in K-mart when it came out (that lady sales rep hated me), but then I got someone in high school wanting to sell their SS for 80 dollars with a few games (normal stuff), along with this (his words) "weird sorta beat-em up game called Guardian Heroes". Still own both. I got pretty much every good game for the system during its life. And I also lived 1 hour away from a large import store for games and anime that my friends and I went to all the time. So not only did I get the US releases, but also most of the Japanese games I wanted. (the only game I wanted but didn't get was Dragon Force 2 (cant read Japanese)) I'm pretty sure I own all the rare and exclusive games for the SS because I bought them as they released. If I had to buy them NOW at these prices, I think I would get a console, and get an ODE for it. Emulation is still not great for the Saturn.

Great video! Glad to see others sing the praises of the Saturn! I collected for the Saturn over a decade ago and it was glorious! There are so many excellent exclusives that are still tethered to the console! I agree that if you want the full Saturn experience, you definitely need to import Japanese games as well as the Saturn's Japanese game library was much more robust than other regions.
I also agree that the Saturn controller is still one of the most perfect controllers in existence! I did also like the 3D controller that comes packaged with Nights. It is a very bizarre controller (almost like a prototype Dreamcast controller), but it works quite well for the games it is compatible with!

I’ve had a Saturn since 2013 - the only Sega console I never purchased. I was happy to close that gap between my Genesis and Dreamcast.
TBH, it’s a hard sell to collect for the Saturn today, because while there still a few reasonably priced games here and there, prices just keep climbing, even for the JP versions - and you can forget about the shooters… probabaly the most expensive of the bunch… that said, there are some modern solutions to make the best of everything the Saturn library has to offer. If you have a CRT with Component input, the HDRetroVision Genesis component cables with the Saturn adapter will look GLORIOUS on it!

The games I emulate, for the most part, are games I purchased and sold and sometimes purchased again. Finally got into the Saturn around 2015. Was always a console that fascinated me as a kid, but could never play it. Never knew anyone who had it either. But when I finally got one and began dabbling in it's library, it's easily become one of my favorite consoles. It has such a unique library of games and its controller is one of the best out there, especially for fighting games.

the sega saturn is a core console from my childhood that i never truly appreciated. i recieved mine for christmas one year from my brother (who was tired of me sneaking into his room to play his PS1 while he was at work hahaha) with quake and virtual fighter 2. from the beginning, i started gathering games from a chain pawn shop here in canada called Cash Converters...i didn't realize you needed a battery or a ram cart to save game data, so getting far in games was never really an option.
as an adult, i've developed a greater appreciation for the saturn (especially through the import and translation patch scenes), and its become one of my favorite consoles. it seriously deserved to succeed in a western market, but i'm just thankful we had it here to begin with. watching this video brought back a lot of great memories and warm, tingly, feelings. thank you

Great video about the best console ever (in my opinion anyway, lol).
Had one of these in my youth in the mid-90s, and have great memories of playing some great games.
A very underrated console and despite some games being ridiculously expensive, you can still pick up some bargains. I managed to get dead or alive for just £5 a year or so ago from a eBay auction.
I might be mistaken but was the Saturn the first console with wireless controllers? I ask as I remember having battery infrared controllers for the first Saturn I had back in the 90s, lol.

You got a really valid point regarding the good 2d, good arcade and good pickup and play games. I'll add good nostalgic early 3d games to the list.

Hey Bird! I completely missed the Saturn back in the day. I have toyed with the idea of buying a used Saturn and hooking it up with a sd card reader. I've played a few games like Deep Fear using my pc/emulation/retroarch. The only thing is a used Saturn is going for around $200. I'm hesitant to make the investment and will probably just emulate with the equipment I already have. Good point about at least using the Saturn controller and Retro-bit makes some good options. Peace brother!

I was one of the two kids in my high school who picked the Sega Saturn over the PS1 or N64. Not only did I keep all my games, but when the other Saturn owner moved away, he gifted me all of his Saturn games which I also kept all these years. I'm so glad I made that choice because not only did I love playing the console, but I also got to dodge a lot of the inflated prices people deal with today.

I loved this game on the ps1 and discovered that the Saturn version is actually better (no long waiting time when you change your form). +1 for the Saturn! I love the controller and the console design too. Very enjoyable video, looking forward to the next one. Seeya!

I brought a SEGA Saturn in September 1996, after saving up for a Playstation. It was the triple whammy of SEGA Rally, Virtua Fighter 2 and Panzer Dragoon Zwei that convinced me to switch to Saturn. Within a week of purchase I had Nights into dreams and a 3D controller too, it was amazing!!
It was somewhat strange over the next couple of years to be repeatedly told that the Saturn was 'Rubbish at 3D games' or a crappy console that only an idiot would buy. I know how popular the Playstation and then the N64 were, but was the Saturn bad? - definitely not.
The Sega Saturn is still my favourite console (sorry Neo Geo) and it's really great to see it being recognised as a worthy games machine these days. I never lost faith and my machine has outlived several modern consoles in my household!! I currently have a library of 534 games to choose from, as I started importing to expand my collection decades ago - before the prices got silly. I still have the itch and I've picked up several games and demo's this year already - I LOVE my Sega Saturn!!

Thankfully it's super easy to play backups now. A Saturn Kai cartridge lets you play burned CDs and is only $40; a Saroo flashcart lets you load games from an SD emulating them and is only marginally more expensive; a satiator has near 100% compatibility for loading games off an SD playing them from the hardware and it slots in the video slot in the back letting you still have acceß to the CD drive and cartridge slot. Although it was $250, it was well worth the money for me.

Probably my favourite console of all time. For me it is worth it. Yes you can get more accurate measures of a game like Battle Garrega on PS4 for example but, there’s something special about the Saturn. Best port of Outrun, Dodonpachi, Tiger 2 just to name a few. Expensive yes, but like Retrobird says, fire rangers isn’t for everybody like me, I’m not interested. But you’ll be interested in something else like Hyperduel!! Just awesome.

I am from Hungary and I was fortunate to own a Saturn back in the day, absoltely loved it, I've got a black one like yours and it was business. Then when Sega prematurely, so I felt, pulled the plug and introduced a white fugly Dreamcast with THAT 4-button controller, I was so angry I sold my Saturn and quit console gaming... until GT3 was released on the PS2. To this day I never played a 3d Sonic game I was so disappointed. I sort of fancy buying one as it is IMHO the best looking console of all time, but emulation is so convenient these days I just cannot justify it.

I'm really happy I have a sega saturn collection. My girlfriends brother asked if I wanted his old systems with some games but they didn't work. I was able to simply take apart and put back together to get it working again but so started my journey into getting more games for. I'm at a point where I plan to update the saturn with the bios and memory chip replacements and then start enjoying these games I never played or bet in my younger years.

Hell, yeah I Sega Saturn! In fact, right now I'm plowing my way through Dragon Force! I'm at a point where i've gotten almost all members of the dragon force and two bad guys have turned on me Taken control of one of my castles and forced my generals there to flee and return in an attempt to retake it... one general at a time! After that, I'm not entirely sure if i'm going to play the translated Dragon Force two or try to get beyond disk two of Panzar Dragoon Saga.😊
This was right after finally finishing Experimental Gimmick Gear for the Dreamcast. I grew up a Nintendo fan boy, but after basically being given a Dreamcast in 2001 and buying sixty games and tons of peripherals for it became a REAL Sega fan and right now i'm just on a Sega kick.

The Saturn, at least here in the US, was definitely not seen as the console to own by 1997, but if you were a fan of arcade games and/or Sega games, then you were most definitely happiest with that console even over the Playstation. And one thing to keep in mind is that while the Playstation had a monstrous library compared to its competitors, new games were still $40+ a pop and most of us gamers back then didn't have unlimited money to spend on games. So while it was awesome to own a console like the PSX that had tons of great games to play, you were lucky if you owned more than a few dozen games, which meant spending your money wisely and trying to sift through all the crap, which was generally a lot easier to do for Saturn owners.
Although Sega (specifically Bernie Stolar) really screwed its own fans over by abandoning the Saturn in the US market so soon after launching it.
Edit: One of the things that is often overlooked about the Saturn is the reliability of the hardware, which is kinda insane considering how complex it is. Back in the 90's, the general understanding was that the failure rate of the Playstation was about 20:1 when compared to the Saturn, especially with the early model Playstations that seemed to have issues reading discs (I experienced this same problem when a PSX I bought from a friend eventually stopped reading discs unless I turned it upside-down, which was a common "fix" for those earlier models). In contrast, the Model 1 Saturn I have still reads discs just fine to this day. It seemingly has some issues with the expansion port as I can't seem to get my Satiator to work anymore, but otherwise there's no issues with running games or reading discs, even after all of these years. I've never owned a Sony console that has lasted anywhere near as long as my Saturn (or even my Dreamcast).
