    all racing sequential gearbox is pushing forward to downshift, pulling backword to upshift. I'd say bimmer did it right and great.

    Very informative video. The reason you push forward to downshift is because when your braking the weight transfers forward so it's in the same direction. So for acceleration it's the opposite, pull back. I think it's a great idea

      I always thought it was because they’re inspired by a manual transmission. 1st gear is up, 2nd gear is down…

    The natural instinct is to pull gears - and push forward for downshifts. Look at any sequential gearbox race car

      no it is not, Think about when you turn corners and shift up and down a gear, it doesn't make sense in the BMW way. Selespeed is better in this sense.

      Pulling to up shift is the way to do it. Unlike Audi's system where you have to push. I find push to up shift very awkward and just weird.

    I actually like how pushing up down shifts its made this way for a reason because when you get pulled back in the seat your arm moves back too, so if your hand is on the shifter it will move back to up shift. :) good video keep it up👍👍👍

    When I first test drove one of these beasts with SMG, I actually thought something was wrong with the transmission, slow and it lurched at the slow setting. Then I studied up on that little button below the shifter. I’m still not a big fan of SMG but once you put some time into learning the car it starts to work better. This is really a car where reading the owners manual pays off.

    It moves the hubs from one gear to another in 40 miliseconds and then it takes ages for it to engage the clutch again, that's the problem, and the down shifts are quite agressive with poor rev matching, it feels like someone whos still learning how to rev match.

    The gearshift is the correction orientation, forward to gear down and pull back to gear up , acceleration pushes you back into the seat and pushing up to gear up while being pressed into the seat is awkward , tci have been making reverse pattern valve bodies for muscle/drag cars for as long as I can remember.

      @@ECPP I agree that logic would suggest forward should be up and pull back should be down and it makes sense to the mind and its easier for the mind to associate forward with up and back with down , but in practice it is awkward , from my own experience launching an awd car to 1.53 60 ft and being mashed into the seat shifting from 1st to second on a H pattern gearbox is a challenge and 1st to 2nd is in the pull direction , I've missed 2nd to 3rd a few times, if i was running sequential gearbox and circuit racing which i was planning on doing It would be far more practical to have the g forces in my favor.

    5:00 the pull for up/push for down layout of the shifter is the right configuration. This is based on racing cars equipped with sequential gearboxes. While it would seem correct by pushing up to shift up and pull down to shift down, it is counter-intuitive against momentum of the car's motion. BMW is among very few automakers to have the shift layout configured correctly, and it bewilders me how other automakers continue to get it wrong.

    Do you let off the throttle during shifting? I have found it is much smoother when you let a little during the shifting process then reapply once it is done. It does take practice to get it just right, hopefully this doesn’t cause extra wear. I always run my M6 on the 5th shift setting regardless of being in M mode or default.

      shadowp80 man I can never use the lowest level. It is like driving a ‘76 Chevy Silverado LOL. I can cruise in the 3rd setting, but even then it throws off my shift smoothness. I can shift in 5th and 6th setting super smooth.

    I would like to mention a second way (already written in your other video "How I Park My BMW E60 M5 | Tutorial"
    When we want to stop the car and park it, we park the car in gear (manual or D-mode, or Reverse, that is not important), than turning off the engine... and now it comes:
    AFTER turning off the engine, engaging the handbrake and pulling out the key, we may leave it in gear, or we may pull the knob back to the N position ... TRY IT.. this way we'll notice, that the knob will not move anymore, because it is locked in that N-position!!!!!! The gearbox has technically NOT changed yet to neutral, it has remained in gear, and will remain there, but has locked/parked in neutral KNOB-position only!
    Very few E60M5 friends know that.
    So, when we want to take off, we only have to insert the key (you have keyless, so only have to push the start button), and whilst starting the engine.. the gearbox automatically unlocks and changes simultaneously from gear to neutral (because it was in that N-position before), so the engine will start immediately.
    Greeeeets and cheeeeers

    the only downside of DCT, if I have to say from my experience, is only that it cannot handle motors designed for greater torques. BMW, Audi is exclusive for PDK, DCT sourced from ZF because their engines, unlike mercedes, are highlighted with moderate torques with the greater engine speed in rotation.

      since I have decided to keep this F1-bred V10 of my own in 2009 e63 m6 competition pkg, the only regret boils down in the end to the eff-ing gearbox. Obviously, SMG gearbox is bmw's fancy but poor attempt, or a phase transition from the traditional manual gearbox to the fully-fledged dual clutch transmission widely used recently by manufacturers. I am currently digging thus for DCT conversion statewide.

    • @ECPP
      @ECPP  6 лет назад +1

      Hi, yes the SMG is far more complex than a manual transmission with many more functional parts that can be expensive. The SMG is not terribly unreliable but when it breaks there is much more $$$ associated. I personally like the SMG more than a steptronic as the SMG is a manual transmission with only 2 pedals and the clutch is actuated by electrical solenoids and pressure sustems. The manual is always a more engaging experience but the auto is ok where heavy traffic congestion is a concern or lots of city driving can be a concern.

    I heard that if you get a bump when parked in gear with SMG it can break the transmission. Hence best to leave it in neutral and use the parking brake unless on a steep incline. Is this so?

    • @WoodstaS
      @WoodstaS 6 лет назад

      I park mine in neutral in case I need to tow it for some reason, because I imagine it would be difficult if not impossible to get it into neutral in case of an electronics failure - although dealing with a stationary car would probably be low on my list of frustrations at that point. Your scenario seems like another good reason. I live in a mostly flat part of town, but in the rare case that I need to park on an incline, I do engage 1st gear to be safe, along with the parking brake.

      If you can’t put it in reverse then yea. OBVIOUSLY something is wrong.

      @@marcoxtv6854 yeah man. I'm starting to consider if these paddle things can be fun since finding manuals is so hard now.

    Do you have to let off the gas pedal when you shift w the paddles?

      @@christopherwalton9510 No I did not. I think it’s advisable you let off but I’m not sure. Each car can vary.

    Do you take your foot off the gas pedal when shifting??

    • @ECPP
      @ECPP  5 лет назад +1

      Sometimes yes and sometimes no. Either will work but for performance I hold it down so it shifts harder and faster. For easy driving I lift.

      ExoticCar PlayPlace thanks for your replies I appreciate it. I’ve been watching a lot of your videos. I impulsively bought a 08 E60 M with 90k on it. I’m super paranoid now that it going to have a serious problem. Your videos have helped. It was taken care of and is in great shape. The transmission was serviced at 84k and It’s had a couple other things serviced and good oil changes it looks like. I talked to a mechanic and I think I’m going to get an oil analysis next oil change to see if rod bearings are going bad. I have 2 other cars, I only plan on driving this car on weekends when it’s nice out. Am I being too paranoid?? Thanks for your Time man. Great videos.
