    Honestly the way you are talking about the jetpack, making it like how a double jump works in other games (which is essentially the solution you are describing) makes total sense. It works in.....well the vast majority of games.

    This is for me at least one of the best hand crafted open world game that I have played in years.
    The sheer joy of just walking/jet flying around the different biomes is an experience in itself.
    The fact that they did not make the map huge is a blessing, since the player can just indulge in this beautiful world of adelpha that has been lavished with incredible detail.
    The world definitely has a earthy/alien world vibe to it.
    The only other open world game that I have thoroughly enjoyed apart from this one is surprisingly an Ubisoft game... Immortals Fenyx Rising.
    Outcast's game world has a charm all its own.
    Thanks for this very heartfelt review... absolutely everything that I want to hear from a reviewer who takes his time to "enjoy" a game rather than the ones who rush out game reviews as if on a production line.
    Your conclusion part of the review hit hard.
    Since you seem to love AA games, if you haven't tried them you may like Styx: Master of Shadows, Styx: Shards of Darkness and Strange Brigade.
    These are some of my favourites with regards to the pure joy of gaming.

    Such a great review! I hadn't played the game in this franchise, but it looks like lots of fun. I agree with your final thoughts, sometimes taking a risk on a game you are on the fence about can be a good thing, for you, the gamer and the studio and dev team that created it.

    Great, review. I was looking for something just like this after finishing the game. Appreciate your thoughtfulness and the level of detail you went into. It made me want to start the game again from scratch after just finishing it.
    I agree with you that the world is beautiful and this was absolutely the high point for me. After so many years returning to a (similar) world, that reminded me of the first game in many ways was so much fun. The soundtrack was also (once again) incredible.
    The low points for me;
    It was interesting that you enjoyed the interaction with the Talan in the villages. I actually didn't enjoy it this time round. I found the original to be far more interesting in this area. Except for Daak, most of the interactions/village quests felt a bit tedious. Especially compared to how engaging exploration and combat is in "a new beginning".
    The markers on the map felt overkill. There was way too much hand holding, I really missed the sense open ended exploration that the original had. The sense of really being dropped on an alien planet and feeling lost to some degree. Although I love the jetpack, it also made it a little too easy to zoom around. I think when I play it for the second time I'll turn the HUD off and spend time walkingand observing details, as there are so many details in this world that I missed. If there is an Outcast 3, I'd love to see a bit more balance between on-foot and jetpack exploration.
    I think some of the mystery around the Doakas was lost in this one. I would have loved a few more opportunities to walk through a doaka and be dropped at a random point in the map, unaware of the area I was in. That was one of my highlights from the original. Outcast 1 did an incredible job of mystery, would love more of that.
    Would have loved at least one location from the original. Maybe Ranzaar as it would be a small location to build.
    Won't say too much about the story, but agreed that it wasn't a highlight. I would have happily taken a shorter storyline, but one that was better paced.
    We spend ages quest wise unlocking Oru's guns capabilities and I never used them, always forgot in battle.
    There are a few moments that felt like they could have been bigger/more intense (when one of the villages gets atacked, this could have been a huge moment, taking down the supply ships for the first time - loved it but then I realized this was just going to become a recurring activity). I think the original Metal Gear Solid did a fantastic job of this, having these unique gameplay moments that felt really big but they were never repeated.
    On the whole, fantastic game, enjoyed it thoroughly. I'll definitely return. If we get a sequel I really hope for a better storyline, with more mystery and open ended exploration that feels less hand held. Keep the combat, keep the world design and you've got a winning package.

    Oh my gosh the soundtrack sounds great. I was worried that it might not live up to the original (that was a high bar) but this sounds wonderful.

    Thanks for the review. Definitely on my "to buy" list. Comical note, the first Outcast game I played, I had a lot of boring adult stuff to do! Now, I have all the time in the world to do whatever, barring dementia or other disturbing things.

    Brilliant and detailed review!!
    I'm loving Outcast a new beginning so far and probably agree with everything in this review.
    I do however feel the old enemies in the original had more character and comedy at times. I really miss the option of stealth and use of dynamite and other gadgets too.

    • @UnderTheMoons
      @UnderTheMoons  5 месяцев назад

      Yes! I missed mentioning the lack of stealth! Maybe I roll played stealth so much I forgot it wasn’t actually part of the game 😂
      And the AI in the original had such a funny style to it, like they would look at you as if they saw you from a distance but weren’t quite sure if it was you, or they felt like they didn’t want to mention it to anyone else as they don’t want to be a bother 😂

      Absolutely! It was so cool when you were spotted and had to run away when you were low on ammo and couldn't use the gamasavv near them either. It's these little things that I really missed... Like getting the soldiers drunk on Lampe in the barracks 😂

    Great review. I'm happy you took your time with this one and I was pretty much nodding along with every point you made. Half an hour never went by as fast as this one. You even mentioned the inability to have very small normal jumps after getting the jet pack! Perhaps the biggest annoyance to me! The beautiful world pretty much erased most of the negative points for me, because I simple love traversing it but I wish there were more smaller and simpler quests to fill the world with. The story doesn't feel very streamlined and yeah the ending is clunky at best. A lot of that comes down to a smaller team not having the means to do more, but all in all I really enjoy the game. I even occasionally liked doing temple runs and normally I abhor those kinds of elements in a game.

    Thank you! Especially for the objective perspective. I am still mixed about Outcast NB. The music does not stand up to the original and the "modern" HUD is meeh. On the other hand, this is still an awesome game, that brings us back to Adelpha.

    Adding updated versions of the original game locations as DLC might be pretty awesome, seeing how things have changed since Cutter saved them in the past and how the new enemy has affected them.
    Is it just me or does Cutter seem to be hovering above the ground when running, and sometimes leaning to far forward?

    • @UnderTheMoons
      @UnderTheMoons  5 месяцев назад

      Oh interesting, I’ve not felt like he’s off the ground or leaning, that’s a unique one! 😂.
      Also yes! The save point of no return made me sad as I couldn’t visit one town. And in the credits I see that town has scaffolding all over it. That would be the perfect model to have replace the fully intact one in a theoretical post game world.

    I agree with quite a lot of the points you've made!
    The only big negative for me was the ending and where it closes off, it was just a little much honestly, I don't think it needed a big ending! But that doesn't make the rest of the game bad by any means, I still love this game and completing it was super fun!

    Do still need to get this. Too many expendatures recently though. They definitely have some real talented artists at the studio and it's nice to see a game that has scope but not much in the way of bloat. Also love that they skipped having one of them Assassin's Creed style climbing systems and just let you jump up everywhere. Always more fun and immediate to traverse like that for me which is probably why I like games like Just Cause and Crackdown.

    • @UnderTheMoons
      @UnderTheMoons  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah at first I wondered if being abler to get into every place from the get go would ruing the gradual exploration I loved in the original, but nope! They pace out where you NEED to go really well that it always feels like your spotting something new.

    This is my review:
    The good:
    The world. I think we will all agree on that. But it is astonishingly good. For example, Palana and Desan are just incredible. So much imagination, so much personality, so epic. The scale of it all is incredible. I couldn’t really have asked for much more. It just reminds me of the wonder of playing the first game, and is what I always dreamed Adelpha would be like.
    The fighting
    I am really surprised at how good the fighting is. There is a really good range of enemies, with interesting attacks that make you play in different ways. It is fun, I would look forward to fights.
    The quest system and the way this feeds into the world building
    One of the things that makes the 1st game so special is the way its like a study in this society. You learn about their religion, their values, their history, how they live. The quest system really gets that across - I think having your quests marked in the map, and shown as influencing one another, is great. It gives a sense of the world being in connection with itself, and it helps to make each village/region feel like a distinct place (something the sequel is in danger of losing from the 1st game, since there aren’t separate worlds). The missions that go along with this also help to convey this spirit of learning about the Talans, feeling their society. And it is really cool that from this you get not just through the story, but powerful features. The Galenta is such a great idea. The village quests are fairly well written and really do capture the vibe of the first game.
    The Music
    Well durr. Obviously
    The dialogue
    The written dialogue is good - the jokes are like in the first game, and are still generally quite funny. The tone is right.

      The bad
      Most of the things that I think are bad I don’t mind that much about and forgive, because the Appeal only have about 50 staff. You just can’t expect certain things. With that said, these are the problems:
      The quest gameplay
      Although the fighting is fun and well designed , and I like the quest system and the general vibe they give off, I would say the gameplay you get is very repetitive and rather basic. It is basically, oh, go and fetch this. Go and rescue this person from a base that is fundamentally identical to all others. There aren’t any quests with specially written stories and features, that suck you in. Like I said, I can forgive this given the small team. And because I love the world and the meaning of it all, I don’t mind too much.
      The voice acting
      In English, the voice acting is just in American, and occasionally English, accents. I love the Talan accent/intonation in the first game. It gives the world so much authenticity, believability and character. I think it’s a real shame this was abandoned.

      The main story
      I generally found this disappointing. The setup of Outcast 1 is so great. It is so clear, you understand the scenario, what is at stake, and Cutter has clear motivations. Everything makes sense. And then the twist that Fae Rhan is a human, and from your team, is fantastic. And the way it ends in a revolution, is all great writing. It is also quite simple - not much backstory for the characters, as it’s not needed. But the sequel is clunky. It relies a lot on the deus ex of the Yods - they can revive Cutter. They can give him access to conversations needed to make it all make sense. It feels quite contrived. Towards the end, you find out a lot of stuff that makes the human behaviour clearer, but this is not clear for most of the game. And it doesn’t feel like a significant twist or reveal, just confused. I really did not like that in the endgame, Cutter takes a sort of liberal peace loving position. I think the Talan have every right to fight back, they are horrifically oppressed by humans. I love that the first game makes humans the enemies and ends with an unashamed revolution led by the Talans. In this, it feels like they lost confidence in that idea. And it wasn’t clear to me at the end - did everyone win because the Talans fought back, or not? It gets very confused. I like that the Talans win of course, but it is written in a messy way. I feel the general story is good - not as good as the first game but that was amazing so you can’t expect that - but it is executed in a poor, confusing and slightly cheesy way.

    • @UnderTheMoons
      @UnderTheMoons  5 месяцев назад +1

      Great breakdown of it all. Sounds liked we’re very much on the same page. The stance Cutter tries to take with trying to get the Talan to cool down as he knows Jack will just squash them if they try and fight back is really interesting. It’s a real sticky situation that we don’t get to dive into at all. And it all kicks of due to a very small bout of miss-communication in a highly emotional moment. It’s such a shame it rushes it all as there’s some really interesting and difficult political points brought up, but then we suddenly zip to Cutter on the space station declaring peace. Like what the heck did I just miss!?
      But yeah, great breakdown Daniel!

    Thinking more about it, I think that there is a very good justification for the returning to adelpha, and the story comes close to getting it.

    • @danielmorley8943
      @danielmorley8943 5 месяцев назад +1

      The danger with a sequel like this is in finding a reason that it makes sense to return to the same place, and do more or less the same thing, and generate the same empathy.
      I think that in fact, there is a very logical reason to return to Adelpha, and it is more or less what the story of the sequel is. If Outcast 1 is about colonialism, about how humans from more developed economies take advantage of less developed, then it makes perfect sense that after humanity at large finds out about Adelpha, they would invade and steal its resources. In this way, the game repeats the basic themes and events, but on a higher level. It is a development - all of humanity is invading.
      I also think a really good part of the story that should be there is that on Adelpha there is division over this invasion, and scepticism over the prophecies. Why believe in the Ulukai if in fact his ‘victory’ only caused an even greater invasion? And a division in talan society just makes the whole thing richer, more complex, and it makes perfect sense.
      But I think execution and details are confused. Despite the basic ideas being really good, I think the way it is done, the player does not have that clear setup as we had in outcast 1. The player lacks a clear ‘way in’ and sense of motivation and scenario.
      I think the main mistake is to put Cutter back on Adelpha via the Yods, and then their ability to reincarnate him. It makes things immaterial - we know very little of the yods and why they really do anything. Why have they brought him back? It means in turn that Cutter is confused. He doesn’t remember the first game’s events, and is just put here against his will. There is I think also confusion in terms of the Talan - i like the idea they no longer really believe in the prohecies, but they don’t seem to have any questions about why a human is amongst them. Whereas in the first game, the attitude of the talan is so clear and logical - they see Cutter as the potential messiah, a higher being.

    • @danielmorley8943
      @danielmorley8943 5 месяцев назад +1

      I think the following would be similar but better:
      Why not have it that Cutter returns to earth after events of 1, but sees with horror the way earth becomes divided and embittered, and reacts to the news of adelpha’s existence by invading, taking Xue’s crimes up a notch. He feels alienated from earth, he is not a hero. I think there are other stories in which the hero is not recieved as a hero and becomes jaded, cynical etc. but I can’t think of what they are. It works well as a set up for a sequel.
      Because Cutter is so horrified at earth’s actions, and in fact feels more like an ‘Adelphan’ now, he finds a way to get back to adelpha to help them.
      But upon arrival he is in turn further disappointed to find he is on a new continent and that talan no longer believe in him, and are divided because the old prophecies are not true.
      Thus, the initial goal is to find way to the Dolotai guardians who still believe, who he has heard talk of, and he remembers Zokrym and Jan. This would provide an exciting element of mystery - where are they?
      From then on, after finding them, his role is much like in the actual sequel

    good review. It's fun to see how appeal manages to make a sequel to a 25 year old game. Personally, I'll wait until the price goes down. Just like you, I need to prioritize my time. Okay, this is the sort of review I wanted. One by someone who liked the original. I have read quite a few bad takes recently that seemed to miss the point (Including one particularly scathing one that called it a white savour simulator, cause I guess the aliens being.......well aliens makes this some kind of racial statement). Anyway, it was good to hear from someone who actually understood the original and realises that not everything is some kind white supremacy screed.
