I've found the bladders to be a pain. I used them when I first started. Now, I just use smartwater bottles and a sawyer or Katadyn BeFree. I never drink as much as I should. I just don't like to take the time to filter. Not a smart move! I don't feel like I drank any more or less when I used a bladder. I'm always bad about not drinking enough. There is definitely a balance between ultralight and comfort. I've found that I'm willing to carry a little more weight if it's something I think is worth it.
I cut the tube on my hydration kit so its like a real short straw (with the bite nozzle attached) and I fix it onto my Smartwater 750ml bottle which goes into a sleeve on my strap and I can drink on the go right from my strap. It's real convienent!
Most people do not share their fails. Thanks for the cautionary tail. Note to self: drink plenty of water.
I've been using this system for over 2 years now and love it. I used to use bladders but it was kind of a pain.
I'm excited to use this system on my upcoming thru-hike
Good video. Thanks for the tips.
Thanks for watching! 👍

Does it have a breather valve of some sort so the bottle doesn't compress?
It does not. But I had no problems with the bottle compressing at all.
