My Mom was a great cook. She died very suddenly when I was a teenager leaving my Dad and I to fend for ourselves ….Banquet meals became a staple for us. I almost cried when I saw that. One thanksgiving we were a family of 4 living in a motel and our thanksgiving dinner was Carl Buddig turkey (2) packs, a loaf of white bread, and for a treat 1.25 liter soda split between us. Family was what counted and we were thankful to be together and for me to start a job at a truck stop food outlet the next day.

Watching this I think about a sad time of my life I had a full time job as a low level government employee and was in the military reserves and I barely made money to pay for my bills. That November I had spent my paycheck keeping the electricity turned on and having gas to go to work. My fridge was empty. So I went to the active duty base and asked if I could pay to have thanksgiving dinner and they allowed me to. That was the happiest day for me. Today I’m still lonely as I was before but I have my own place and most bills are paid and I have money to buy whatever I want to eat these holidays. I’m very thankful for being in a better place, and if there are somebody who are going thru difficulties, remember everything gets better. And there is help where we least expect. But God will show you the way if you are willing to listened. Hope you all have a wonderful thanksgiving.

I really like the Butterball smoked turkey, it’s already fully cooked so you’re literally just heating it. I bought one turkey in October for Thanksgiving and I bought one turkey in November for Hanukkah. Buying one turkey per month ahead meant I got the turkeys I wanted and I don’t have to go in search for one in December. I also bought two cans of cranberry sauce, a bag of great value yeast rolls, two cans of yams and two boxes of stuffing. All of which will be divided by one can of each, one stuffing and one turkey per holiday since it’s only me, my husband and my son.

Making a turkey with gravy, even though I hate turkey. My husband n kids love it. I brine it the night before. Making the usual stuffing with Italian sausage, baked potato casserole with bacon n cheddar cheese, sweet potatoes, a veggie, salad, and a charcuterie board as an appetizer with bread. I think everything cost me $50 and it will serve my family of 4 kids, their spouses, 3 grandkids, hubby n me. Everything I bought was on sale locally, 5 lbs potatoes 2.99, 5 lbs sweet potatoes 2.99, stuffing mixes .99 each, turkey was 18.00, cheeses, dried meats 1.99 each, bread. And I live in NJ one of the most expensive states. What’s important is to shop your local sales n store everything u til the holiday.

When money was tight I would buy a turkey roll for about $2.50. ( now if you can find them they are $6.00) Looked for sales for the other things and bought pieces instead of bags of veggies like you did. Made my dressing from a loaf of discounted bread from the bread store and for dessert a very unconventional vanilla ice cream with a pie crust round at the bottom of the dish with raspberry sauce I made from berries I picked during summer. The best thing was that no one complained about anything and said it was the best Thanksgiving ever. Which LOL, they said every year !

When you shop around, you will find awesome turkey prices right now. I found 3 local sores last week and this week have whole frozen turkey for under 50 cent a pound. Even cheaper than chicken or a can of veggies per pound. And then you have plenty of bones for bone broth, and if you thaw it and separate it into smaller pieces you can eat most of the season on it. I found a turkey for cheaper than a 10 pound bag of potatoes.

Cheapest turkey I’ve seen is .99 a lbs. Ham is higher, $2.39 a lb for honey glazed spiral (his favorite). Will make both next week and freeze individual meal portions for later. Make broth from both; bean soup and chicken (turkey) dumplings in our near future. And turkey enchiladas! And Bobbie subs! Scalloped potatoes and ham. Ham and Swiss sliders. Big fan of cook once (twice) eat for a dozen or so days!

Unfortunately nothing is the same as it used to be but I think that turkey was still a good option. I grew up on those too (and boil-in-the-bags - I loved those) and it probably used to be just as processed but they used to take the effort to make it look like it was sliced off a turkey.
Some of the stores in my area give free turkeys if you spend a certain amount of money so I haven't had to pay for a turkey in years, thankfully. Because as you've shown you can do a nice Thanksgiving dinner for not too much money once you take the turkey out of the equation, if you stick to the basics and don't have a ton of people to feed. It's mainly veggies and inexpensive carbs.

This year we have to start thin with our thanksgiving dinner at either dollar tree or Walmart which is good. Like they say, Beggars can't be choosy!

I’ll never forget wandering around an open to midnight (those were the days) Kroger tentatively scraping together a Thanksgiving for my pals, marking a similar meat choice. I got home, unloaded the groceries, and to my shock found a huge frozen turkey in my truck bed. What a time we had on the day. I think my dessert was a crustless pumpkin pie (it makes its own crust, enough to pick it up by the slice, anyway, make it in a blender couldn’t be less fuss. Google a recipe, I like them.) As a Texan , I could never spurn your homemade dressing but it seems wrong not being based on cornbread, lol. I love your channel and the obvious love you bear for family and friends.

Lisa - I really have to commend you. You did an excellent job with $20.00. If a family just has a little bit of money and a good imagination, a good meal can be had! Great job and Happy Thanksgiving!

In one of the pandemic years I could not find cranberry sauce or canberries anywhere. I bought some inexpensice raspberry preserves and added a bit of apple cider vinegar to it to make it more tart. I could've added lemon juice if I'd had sny. I think I also could've used some type of canned berries, frozen berry blend or pie filling. One year I had been gifted bags of really great tart dried cherries so I made a yummy tart cherry sauce to have with our turkey. That sauce was a hit with our guests. My Aunt, who was a great cook asked me for the recipe, what a compliment!

We got a whole turkey at Winn-Dixie for $0.49/lb.
We have to wait for sales, too.
    Especially now.

Winn Dixie had their frozen turkeys 49 cents a pound. Ibought a 14 pounder and I'm making about 5 different dishes along with my brother bringing over 4 other dishes. So we're sharing the cost and the work this year.

No criticism here, but cut back on the side dishes. This video shows you don't have to do it all and everything will still be great.

I bought chicken and made something called thanksgiving in a crockpot dinner, it was great and leftovers were the best. Whole meal was under $20. Don't forget to buy the day old pies and rolls to freeze for Christmas. They will be 1/2 off.

We did our Thanksgiving with mom weekend before that. I had gotten a rather large pork loin from the foodbank frozen and sent it up 2 weeks before. It was one of those USDA meats. There were 12 of us and we only ate half. Left mom all the leftovers of course. Today my youngest daughter and her guy is cooking stuff to take to his moms and they made extra for my house. Win Win
