The Risk Of High-Frequency Trading (2012)
Director: Irène Bénéfice, Olivier Toscer
Genre: Documentary
Country: France
Language: English
Also Known As: Cash Investigation: High-Frequency Trading
Synopsis:
Most of us have never heard of high-frequency trading. Yet, many experts predict that the next financial crisis will be caused by this new practice, invented by Wall Street. Thousands of computers are interconnected, buying and selling thousands of market shares every micro-second, with no human control or regulation. We delve into a mad financing world dominated by machines, or rather, by elaborate algorithms carefully developed by mathematicians. The ultimate goal? To reach maximum profit within a few seconds. But sometimes, software breaks down and creates, what experts call a “flash crack,” an instantaneous market collapse. We investigate the job of speed traders and expose the often shocking methods they use to reach their goals.

Great Documentary. Loved it.

You're asking the wrong questions. You also need to learn what an algorithm is, and is not. There are different layers of activity. The High Frequency trades are happening at speeds so fast humans could not intervene if they had to. Even when a human enters an order telling the system to stop trading, it goes on a stack to be executed when a master stack controller finds it is the next transaction to be popped off the stack. Prioritization flags can get a transaction to the top of the stack somewhat faster but when the system is being flooded with transactions prioritization breaks down. At some point a human can use a big hammer such as a force quit or toggle, but that creates other kinds of chaos. Each layer has its own latency and intervention timing opportunities. Find out how they operate their system in slow motion. At every intervention point, identify what happens when the faster layers require intervention and how any intervention will impact trades.
This sounds very interesting. How/where/what can I read up on this? Many Thanks.

@@Atmannnnn I have background in computer science and run my own finance company. If you're interested in this sort of stuff, you can read up on Algorithms and Computational thinking methods. You might need to understand a bit of binary although it's not strictly necessary. Then, pick up any propgramming language, learn how to use APIs and you could have a rudimentary trading bot that buys and sells when you tell it to.
@@Mr33_illuminated31288 that
As the stocks lose their value, if nothing has changed, it’s time to buy, buy, buy!
Could you please elaborate more
@@nothilemdluli845 the value of a stock is not directly related to the company’s actual performance. It is an index that allows investors to see its performance as valued by other investors. If the stock loses value but the underlying asset(company) continues to perform, ie, its fundamentals are intact, you could say it’s gotten cheaper. As time passes the stock will begin to rise again as fear dissipates.
Your speaking from a perspective of an non trader.
In trading speed and right execution zone is key to profitability
Thanks 🙏🏾
This is a significant concern.
MURPHY’s Law states whatever can go wrong will go wrong. Having said that, one what scale are we going to measure what wrong is in the context of speculation here?
I am proud to claim the first inventor/designer/implementer of HFT comes from the same nation I was growing up. And I know him personally. He is SUPERSmart (IQ over 160 at least) in math, physics, international finance, economics, history (military, politics, war, strategy..), computer technology…. , very observant, analytical, metaphysical, has photo camera kind of memory. However, he is very bad to sense people around him, bad at music instrument, bad at painting.
He graduated PhD Physics from Harvard, worked for Wall Street over ten years.
Ironic that spoofing was to blame not high frequency trading. Maybe one day news will tell us the truth!
Spoofing is a type of hft
@@sandworm9528 no? Completely wrong, please educate yourself before spewing nonsense...
@@Jacob_S13 I'm pretty educated on it, I worked for Optus for a couple years when I graduated
This interview team is ridiculous though let's be honest.
They complain noone wishes to talk to them, then they don't properly censor their anonymous source and film him secretly; like what kind of journalist is this even
Then they leak sensitive data of the only company willing to cooperate with them for interviews. Like yeah go ahead, way to go
We know how it works so High Frequency is not gonner help them anyway cause we can also study it & make money out of it whether they like it or not
Keep music low
Years ago, I saw Al Gore dancing at a James Brown concert. And trust me, 'Al Gore Has No Rythem!!'
He really doesn't
The ratio hft and low-ft has to regulated to overcome market-run and system instability in financial system - people who in regulative position are corrupt and they got paid from hft.
OMG I hope this narrator is being paid because he is hilarious. This is a good doc but with him it's a whole different level and that's not just something you learn and ffs it's *def* not something you get with friggin A.I. that's currently plaguing RUclips.
A bunch of old guys mad that they can't front load your activates to make a fortune anymore.
46:30 This laws are just encouraging the crooks to do crookeries. You just pay a speeding ticket of 10K for stealing 585K and that's it. Still in profit without any legal consequences.

HFT is overrated humans can still compete with the bots .
Nothing that eliminates risk is overrated. Banks have spent hundreds of millions on this idea. They richer year by year. Me and you are not😊😊

This is some of the worst investigative journalism ever. Even with its age.
Very smug presenter, also very biased. Quite informative but flippant presentation style detracted from my viewing enjoyment. 5/10
