In a single voyage Dias and his crew cartographed 1 000 nautical miles of the African coast. A feat of unparalleled scientific relevance in the XV century. He should indeed be recognised as the most consequent sea captain of his generation.
He died in a shipwreck in 1500, when he was in the Pedro Álvares Cabral expedition to India, that discovered Brazil. Ironically he died at the Cape of Good Hope.
