    Dana Terrace had a lot more to tell but Disney wouldn’t let season 3 be longer. Luckily Terrace told us a few things, the Clawthorne family are actually descendants of Caleb and Evelyn which makes Eda and Lilith related to Belos and Hunter. Flapjack once belonged to Evelyn and he knew Caleb which is why he chose to be with Hunter. The name of Hunter’s new Palisman is Waffle. Steve is actually Matt’s half brother. Titans don’t have genders they actually reproduce asexually, meaning King only has one biological parent. The eye on the old portal door was actually the right eye of King’s dad.

    I really don't think that an ending where Luz is forced to choose between either realm would have fit The Owl House, especially with the way that things were going in the episodes leading up to the finale. It was made perfectly clear that Camila believed that abandoning her life in the Boling Isles would be a bad decision for herself, and her friend/adoptive brother is a Titan, the race that create working interdimensional portals with their blood. Thematically, The Owl House was more about finding a place where one belongs and can be accepted by others, in contrast to Amphibia, which was more about moving on and accepting change. Frankly, a contrived ending where Luz has to abandon all the connections that she formed in the BI would have left such a sour taste in my mouth.

    • @milansoltesz9395
      @milansoltesz9395 Год назад +42

      Exactly my thoughts. It's different from Amphibia, because Amphibia built up to the ending where Anne's going to leave Amphibia behind and realise some things can't last forever.
      On the other hand, TOH built up to a totally different ending. Sure, the two shows have similarities, but TOH was never about Luz realizing things can't last forever. It was about finding a sense of belonging. That's why I think an ending where Luz is separated from the BI would have been a weaker ending to the show.
      And like you said, they have King who is a titan, so it wouldn't make sense that they can't travel between realms, they basically have an infinite amount of Titan's blood.

    • @PirateOfPlayTime
      @PirateOfPlayTime Год назад +14

      Yeah, I dunno what he was talking about. I think he just wanted this show to be Amphibia without realizing the shows have almost opposite themes and the protagonists have almost opposite arcs.
      Not much to be said that you guys didn't already say, but it definitely wouldn't have fit for Luz to have to choose between the two. It would conflict directly with the entire show from the very first episode: Luz could've gone home if she wanted to at any point in season 1, but she chose to stay and never regretted that choice until she thought she caused its destruction. Anne couldn't, and she probably would've gone home and never looked back if she had the chance in season 1. Luz's story was about accepting herself the way that she is and learning she doesn't have to change herself, but change her surroundings. If she had to stay on Earth she would be back where she was in the pilot (a weird girl with no friends) but with the knowledge that there's a world out there where she has friends, a girlfriend, and useful skills that come naturally to her but she can never go there again. Or if she was cut off from Earth it would basically be the same ending we got except she can never see her mom again or Camila has to leave her home and career to stay with her daughter. The ending we got fits perfectly with the thesis statements the show gave in the first few episodes and reinforced the entire show:
      "us weirdos have to stick together"
      "nobody should be punished for who they are"
      "everyone wants to believe they are 'chosen' but if we all waited around for a prophecy to make us special, we'd die waiting. And that's why you need to choose yourself."

    "I am both king and queen, best of both things." The Titan being gender neutral was one surprise I did not expect.
    I like how Belos's final death was so undignified and pathetic. No climactic final stand, no dramatic sendoff, just a casual execution for the would-be witch-hunter. Crushed with all the ease of wiping away a persistent stain, his final lie falling on deaf ears while Luz, one of his would-be pawns, watches with apathetic silence. It's about us much as curtesy as he deserved at this point.
    Dana Terrace gave us such a wholesome show. It's a pity she wasn't able to do a whole 3rd season (thanks for nothing Disney), but what she gave us was still incredible. I'll miss the Owl House, we all will. Thank you for everything Dana.

    All in all, I was very happy with how Watching and Dreaming turned out, even though I still lament the fact that the show wasn't given the time it deserved. The animation and action sequences were stunning, both antagonists were dealt with in a manner that I found to be fitting, and it was cathartic to see the characters get their happy ending after struggling so much. My only real criticism is that I wish there had been time for the rest of the cast to play a bigger role, although it did make sense for Luz, Eda, and King to get the most focus. It's also a shame that the dream sequences had to condensed into the first seven minutes, since a full episode dissecting their regrets and insecurities could have been fascinating.
    I also think that Papa Titan's involvement in the climax was a very well set-up example of a deus ex machina; it can now be assumed that the eerie voice that Luz heard when she first ended up in the In Between Realm belonged to him, it's been implied on multiple occasions that he has actively been impeding Belos and aiding Luz, and he made a brief appearance in the previous special. Amphibia did a similar idea first, but in this case, I think The Owl House did it better.
    Belos possessing the Titan's corpse made for a pretty satisfying final battle, and it was a possibility that I had been considering for quite some time. Back when the first half of season 2 was still airing, there was a deleted scene that depicted the Titan standing up and creating a shockwave that leveled a city in the Human Realm; this was apparently the vision of the Day of Unity that he was originally supposed to show the Coven Heads in Hunting Palismen, but I wouldn't be surprised if some version of that was always supposed to happen.

  • @MrWanton16
    @MrWanton16 Год назад +48

    I feel as if a fluffy happy ending is more appropriate here esp in the context of Luz getting to stay involved in both worlds. A lot of Amphibia's story was about change and accepting what comes with that even when scary. Not really the case here, Luz's choice to leave the isles is framed as a bad thing from the start and its not as if she'd ever totally leave her mother either so this result makes sense to me. Esp considering that TOH's later half is pretty dark with the occasional joke unlike S3 of Amphibia where you get a lot of fluff after True Colors. Feel like this happy ending is a nice payoff for all the angst Hollow Mind onwards.

    I disagree with you on that the “choose one” ending - for me personally, the all out best of both worlds happy ending was a breath of fresh air and very fitting for TOH, because so much of this show’s been centred around NOT having to choose just one thing, but being able to be more at once - Luz isn’t just a human or a witch, after all - she’s both, and she’s changed the world so that others can be more than in one coven and are able to explore other things than the single one Belos would allow them.

    this episode was such a satisfying finale in so many ways and did so much well. i was just a little sad to think about all the extra things we could've gotten if we only had more time. we can only hope we get more owl house content in some form.
    two of my personal hangups are that we barely got v screentime and that we never really got to delve into hunter's trauma and see him work through that. i'll just have to assume that offscreen he's seeing a therapist lol. we also didn't get much of him being a part of the noceda family in the finale so i also am just going to assume he bounces around his adoptive parents/families (darius, the clawthornes, and camila)
    + the fact that they made the final 3 episodes spell out thanks for watching makes me want to scream and sob. so much love went into this show. im really going to miss it. there's something about. when people get to make their passion project and share that with the world and they're just so thankful to have gotten the chance and for the support they've received even if they get screwed over. it's very heartwarming to see and makes me really emotional.
    also can we all just applaud the crew for not going "friendship and forgiveness is always the answer, even for people who are the scum of the earth" they said F THAT stomp this man's corpse. love everything said about/the actions taken towards belos this episode. he really is one of the best villains i've seen in a long time, not even just in cartoons.

      + something i connected on my first watch that idk if other people mentioned but luz's titan form feels a little bit like a nod to the bodyswap episode in s1 in which king was in luz's body so she had his eyes and fang. also recently ive been rewatching s1 with friends (their first time watching) and seeing a LOT of callbacks that show up in this episode that go all the way back to the start of the series. very cool. definitely recommend people giving it a rewatch themselves to discover those.

    I'm sad we didn't get more, but I'm very happy with what we got.
    It's hard to pick my favorite moment from the finale, but if I had to choose, I think it's Luz and Belos' final confrontation.
    Belos tries desperately to lie to Luz, claiming to have been the victim of dark magic; but when the boiling rain comes and starts melting his body, he quickly reveals that he's still full of bigotry and hatred. Ranting and spewing verbal bile, he attempts to get Luz to save him.
    And Luz...just stands there. She silently and emotionlessly watches him die; no words to him, no expression of anger or hate, no move to attack him or finally kill him. She just lets it happen.
    It's quite the contrast. Belos, a centuries old man, who lived by stealing magic even as he attempted to eradicate it, slowly melting and dying as a puddle of sludge, facing Luz, a young woman who was freely given the power of the Titan, standing perfectly unharmed in the deadly rain.

While Amphibia had the message of "Letting Go and Letting Grow" as i put it, Owl House has the message of "Acceptance and Understanding." Luz's journey of self love is parallel to Anns' but with Luz she not only learns to love herself she teaches others to accept her for who she is and that she wont change for others.

    On one hand I understand and actually quite agree with what you said about the Isekai finals being bittersweet. And you're basically right, really as a concept, to have to choose one of the worlds and have a sadder ending in order to learn. Despite everything in this single case, I am of the opinion that this final should be like this purely narratively and not simply because of the meta element, yes, there is this meta element, it is a bit difficult not to have it. A lot of people will make a comparison with the ending of Amphibia, obviously why, but in this series there is no logic to go there, because while Amphibia is about growing up and learning to let things go, there the ending, to choose one of the two worlds is fully justified, BUT in The Owl House the leading theme is to find the place where you belong and be understood for who you are, but accordingly to learn not to use this place for escapism at all and to be able to make the balance - and the finale is exactly that , Luz finally feels understood, accepted and loved but she no longer uses this world to escape reality completely, she has learned to balance between fantasy and reality and literal and figurative meaning, which she couldn't from the beginning because of her problems . So while I agree with you about what you said about the Isekai finals, here I think it works better as a purely narrative. The alternative would seem strange, and if we were to take the sad ending of Amphibia and put it here, the themes would not combine well at all. So here, I'll make an exception .
    Here, at the risk of sounding like a defensive fanboy, I will say this. And I'm not trying to pick on you, I'm just stating an opinion. If we're going to talk about consistency, The Owl House is better than Amphibia in my opinion, and for me it's better in terms of quality, mostly because, season 3 of Amphibia, with the exception of one or two episodes and the final 2 episodes themselves, the whole Season 3 was very bad in terms of consistency, especially in terms of tone.
    And if you don't believe me, I'll say this
    Amphibia Season 2 Finale - Marcy is stabbed through the heart with a fucking sword ..........................literally 2 minutes later.... .....................season 3 starts - and Ann is like - ahh my phone internet is back I'M HOME time to have fun on Earth with the frogs. Girl, your best friend was stabbed through the gut with a sword and your other friend might be dead too, can you at least pretend you care, a little. When I saw it, I was just WHAT.
    The episodes themselves were probably funny, I didn't, I didn't particularly like the humor, but that's me, let's say it's a matter of taste, let's say they're funny, even then, there's no room for such tonal dissonance anymore. This was acceptable in season 1 but after True Colors this tone is completely out of place.
    And season 3B, no comment, with the exception of the Andrias backstory episode and the final two episodes, season 3B was both a total tonal misunderstanding and a waste of time, for example the Mother Om episode, what was that for but to say something that has already been said and shown twice.
    I know it seems like I'm making up problems and being picky but I just don't find Amphibia interesting all the time. There are many highs, BUT there are also very serious lows, and unfortunately because of season 3, the lows somewhat outweighed the pluses, no matter how good the finale is, in my opinion, it does not compensate for all the problems of the season as a whole, especially the tonal ones.
    ALSO, Bellos is a better villain than Andrias and the Core. To underline, I really, really like Adrias But he is no equal as a villain with the witch Hitler, YES, that's what I call Belos. Sorry, but this guy is a better villain even than Bill, at least more interesting, which to some extent means better.
    Also, this is already personal, no one should agree here, Titan Luz is 10x cooler than Anne, no matter which Anne form we're talking about.
    But anyway, that's just an opinion.

    There are some grips I have with it, like Belos's demise didn't feel as impactful as it could have been, like having one last convo with Hunter, and I'm sad that Hooty didn't have a single line through the episode. But I'm not too harsh either, since we know who to blame for the season to end so quickly. Overall, I enjoyed this journey with this show, which when i started it, I didn't think I would get as engaged as I did.

    1:17:30 Hey Shark hope you see this but there are a few Disney shows both current and past that I'd think are worth putting on the list.
    Tangled The Series: Of the serialized Disney shows in the 2010's this gets talked about the least but it is a solid series. Obviously IDK if you watched Tangled but I assume you have seen the film.
    Ducktales 2017: Another great sorta serialized show. Great characters and up their with Gravity Falls when it comes to comedy. Absolutely stands on it's own and don't need to watch the OG.
    The Ghost and Molly McGee: Very episodic with a couple ongoing story arcs starting as of the time but it is a funny, charming chill series.
    Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur: This show is filling the Owl House/Amphibia hole for me. Great characters, action and humor. Story getting spicy too after the end of S1 and I'm excited for S2
    That's it. I hope you consider these shows because they are well worth it.

    I should probably compile all my comments and opinions about The Owl House in a Google Doc that I can just share around, but for now I'll just write a condensed version here.
    I was waiting for the finale to properly rank the show. Gravity Falls was my #1 favorite animated show since its finale, with Amphibia ending up at #2, but throughout season 2b I had a thought in the back of my mind: "Could this show surpass Gravity Falls?"
    After watching the finale with one of my best friends/classmates, and after crying more than I did with Amphibia (and at least on par with Gravity Falls), and after giving it a few days, I finally settled on my opinion that The Owl House is my favorite show ever made, surpassing Gravity Falls, with Emperor Belos/Philip surpassing Bill Cipher as a villain by far, _somehow._ I have come to proudly say that, to me, The Owl House is genuinely a _masterpiece._ No other show has had me so immersed with the world and story, and as emotionally connected to the characters, from start to finish, as The Owl House (though Gravity Falls is obviously 2nd place in that). I didn't start watching Gravity Falls until maybe halfway through season 2 (genuinely just throwing a random guess because it was so long ago and I can't for the life of me remember), but I don't think it would've made a difference for my ranking.
    Also, I just wanna add in that Philip's death is one of my favorite scenes in the show. I absolutely _love_ that, in his final moments, he stays true to his character and attempts to deceive and manipulate Luz to the very last second, and that Luz just looks away from how shameful and pathetic he is. That is absolutely my favorite decision by the team. Some have said that having Eda, King, and Raine interrupt to kick him ruined the scene, but I disagree, I don't really mind, though I'll admit I would've preferred it if that didn't happen. To be fair, though, them butting in was totally in character.
    If I end up making that Google Doc with what I've said throughout the internet, I'll either edit this message and include the link, or I'll put it in a reply.
    Finally, I'd like to once again thank Dana and her crew for making this awesome show, and, Shark for letting us go on this journey again with him, I can't wait to see what will replace this slot (I hope it's something I like).
    THANK YOU, SHARK!

    I felt the same as you about this ending. It was definitely good, it fit the themes of the series and the story was wrapped up, but it did not blow me away like Gravity Falls, Regular Show, Bojack Horseman, Mystery Inc, Adventure Time, Avatar the Last Airbender, or even Amphibia. To me, this ending was too perfect and too happy. It wrapped up in a very clean way that doesn't feel satisfying because its missing some type of tragedy or emotional hook that makes it feel like "this is it, this is final". Everyone got what they wanted and the bad guy died, THE END and that's personally not what I go for. I'm happy that a lot of people love it, but I mostly feel indifferent towards it as if it didn't leave me with anything and did not make any kind of impression on me.
    This might just be a symptom of the early cancelation, but idk it just felt very hollow to me. A decent ending still makes for a pretty good series, just not something that I would want to revisit or call my favorite. At least it wasn't as bad as Steven Universe, I'm happy that Belos got what he deserved.

    • @JH24821
      @JH24821 Год назад +2

      Same for me. I'm happy it ended well but I can't say it really left an impact on me. For example, I still get emotional when I think about the ending of Amphibia. (I remember Flamingshark getting emotional at the end as well in his reaction) I can understand the creators were strapped for time thanks to Disney, but I don't understand why some characters got so much spotlight (Kikimora, Boscha, Collector) at the expense of others like Belos/Philip.
      We really needed a flashback or scene with Philip, Caleb and Evelyn. I hope that the Owl House will get more material in the future that expands on their past, as well as other things. We got Marcy's journal for Amphibia, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed Disney will do more for TOH, especially after the specials turned out to be popular.

    the parallels between this finale and Amphibia's are quite uncanny, even if the order of their occurance is mixed, and I do think TOH pulled some of them better than Amphibia:
    -The protagonist literally dies in the final battle against the villain.
    -The protagonist meet the omnipotent being responsible for a great source of power in the alternate world, in a version of an afterlife.
    -The protagonist is rewarded for her compassion and resolve, from the being, with resurrection.
    -At the final battle the protagonist gets a power boost, sported with a cool and awesome design.
