voetbal12 - Yeah. No kidding! The Mythbusters had modern materials and cement (as close to the original as possible, but still better), a well lit and well supplied assembly area, safety vests, a support crew and didn’t have the pressure of being discovered, drowning or being carried off to sea. The original escapees were literally paddling for their lives. They weren’t just escaping prison, they were escaping the cruel and harsh treatment of this prison. Desperate men do desperate things. Whether the original men made it, or not, it was still an impressive feat. I still find it odd, that these men were the worst of the worst, but we still look at them as folk heroes, for (possibly) beating the system. I don’t know what’s more impressive: Their ingenuity, or their patience and determination.
They made it for sure ,The Anglins used to swim in ice water and they all had life jackets, Morris was super intelligent and a escape artist, Think about it if they didn’t make it at least one body out three would have turned up somehow, Especially with life jackets.
I looked this up and the supposed leader Frank Morris was a class A Escape Artist of the US prison systems. He was tested as having an IQ of 133, so Frank didn't just come up with this, he took his time, studied everything around him and possibly pulled off the only true escape from Alcatraz. I honestly would love to see a film about this happening
well of course they were never heard from again...they probably changed names and moved far far away if they survived I doubt they would have sat down for an interview on how they did it
Exactly, the three men would now be 87,88 and 91 years old. Even if they came forward today and told their story they would still be arrested and shipped back to prison. If they really want to see if they are still alive today they should drop all charges against them and promise them complete immunity if they come forward.

If the raft was even half as capable of that one, it would have easily provided enough shelter from the frigid water where three men…who were incredibly smart, strong and experienced could make an escape. No doubt in my mind these guys got away, pushed the raft back out into the water, threw his wallet (which was wrapped) into the water knowing it would wash up (because why would you keep anything that connects you to your past) and knew they’d be ruled dead. Genius
My personal opinion, the brothers involved made it. John and Clarence Anglin were extremely talented swimmers who "...amazed their siblings by swimming in the frigid waters of Lake Michigan as ice still floated on its surface." So I believe the raft probably failed at some point between Alcatraz and their destination, but that whatever length they'd managed in that raft was sufficient for two experienced cold water swimmers to get to shore. As for the third guy, I believe he drown.
The Myth Busters took their time in a brightly lit room and carefully checked for leaks with the raft they built as opposed to the escapees who didn't have those luxuries. They died Dyn,
The authorities didn't want the public to know anyone had made a successful escape so they exaggerated the danger and the likelihood that they were dead. The reality is that people swim from Alcatraz to SF all the time, including old ladies and children. It's marathons, not easy, but people do it. Those guys spent a lot of time planning and executed everything perfectly. Morris reportedly had a genius IQ and it kind of shows in the planning. The key was their patience. They never rushed. They never slipped up.
The part where it's asking how the oar got to Angel Island, my guess is it was used as a diversion to make the authorities think they landed on Angel Island, even though the actual landing was the Marin Headlands.
The Mythbusters just proved that it could have worked and they could have made it across safely. The Triangle design of the boat is very smart and not what they showed in the movie. In the movie, they were leaning on a Raft and would have gotten wet and numb from the cold water. But if this is the real design it definitely could have worked. And the fact that no bodies were ever found is more evidence that they made it. That Warden in the movie kept saying they all drowned because he didn’t want to have egg on his face and look bad. They were all outsmarted and made to look dumb with those dummies in the beds. I’m impressed with the Triangle Raft design. It looks very efficient and sturdy. I think they made it and I really enjoyed the movie anyway. That warden was incredibly cruel and went out of his way to prove it every day . He didn’t want anyone to admire these three or think they had any abilities or brains whatsoever. He’s one of those toxic people I avoid in general. They way he dismissed them all! They all drowned. Only they never found any bodies.
The reason that a raft and paddles were left behind, is because one of the people, who was supposed to escape with them, couldn’t make it through the hole in his cell, in time. They waited for him, until they couldn’t wait any longer. When they had to leave him behind, they left a raft and paddles for him, just in case he had any chance. Besides, they had enough for themselves and carrying that extra raft would have slowed them down.
I have a theory about the ore and why they never found the raft. They simply tossed the ores back at sea. They also popped the raft before throwing. The ore at Angel Island may just bee there by coincidence due to a different current in the morning
I was thinking the same thing, that when they reached land, what ever land they landed on, they popped it or destroyed it somehow. It couldn't have been that hard to do, if they were smart enough to escape they were smart enough to hide their trail and throw off police. I mean that is the whole point and plan of escaping, throwing off police.
@@snooze7791 I have the same theory... except I believe they popped/cut the raft and used it as a sort of overcoat to hide their prison clothes and disguise as homeless as they made their way through the city to their point of contact. Got the hell out of SF and the bay area immediately, altered their hair/look, and then straight to South of the border. Anywhere was better than Alcatraz.
Parts of the raft, a paddle and other belongings were found near Angel Island. Which makes me wonder: if the tide was so strong it would just carry them out to see, why were some small items still there in the bay to be found? I think they made it. Their family says they got cards from them and a friend gave them a photo of the brothers supposedly taken in Brazil in 1975
Well, since they had to wait for "the "tide to be right" for the show, that goes to show that the tode coupd have been different on the day they tried to escape, explaining how the oar ended up at angel island. I mean, if that guy's IQ was 133, he probably figured out the tides.

Theirs stories that they had some outside help that they couldn't have made it entirely on their own but enough to say get out of the water. Some say a boat was left for them or someone with a boat came for them half way .
They drowned. The raft was never found because it sank to the bottom of the lake and either got stuck or was dragged out to sea. The men were never heard from again because they all died. Most prison escapees are caught before they even escape prison. Those who escape are normally caught shortly afterward. There have been extraordinary cases where prison escapees have managed to evade capture for decades, but they often had help from the outside. They made it. They sent Grandma flowers and Xmas cards and contacted the sister. John sent a letter recently that said the other 2 had passed away and he was in bad shape with cancer at 85. He offered to turn himself in for exchange for no more than a year in jail and medical help.
Why does the movie and many documentaries depict a "log-like raft" ? The men would have known about the freezing waters and never used such a design. A raft like this one was much more likely. They had 6 months and 15 jackets to "play around with". And the "deadly currents" actually provided them with an express lane out of there.
Those guys were probably paddling to win a canoe race and taking turns inflating the raft. If it was that well planned. They made it across. They would have destroyed any trail of evidence and probably went and hid in Yosemite, found a ship or logistics to hide on all before day break.
Cannot stress this enough, this is very dangerous and the water in the bay would be cold most of the time. If they survived, they were very lucky because of the currents and the tide.
It's possible they made it, but it's probable that they didn't. Plus, I think the night of the real escape, the winds were much stronger and made the bay waters very choppy.

Brilliant prison break..but Never underestimate the water currents and tides of the bay..Personally I think they drifted out to sea...And no one kind hide for 50 years without someone seeing them and reporting them to authorities?
They chose a night with a bright moon.
I doubt anyone will see this an know but is the background music an actual song or a public use thing
The extra or was thrown into the water to throw off the search party
they could have had help inside the prison but who knows
Adam Savage is a mad Scientist
They probably did go out to the open ocean, that would explain why they never found the raft.
They found an ore that washed from the main land, I doubt they were swept out to sea.
i think one of them left their paddle ashore and the tide over s an hour or so pulled it in the water, then the tide changed pushing it to angel
I wished I could reenact it myself and show you how did all items floated to where they were found.
huh?
I believe they made it. Plus in this video they say that their raft wasn’t found but according to a police report made the next day, they did find it and they also reported a 55chevy stolen hmmmm🤭
1:57 OOF
The raft was found 2 days after the escape
I only knew what the escape was because i saw buzzfeed unsolved lol

I think they would not advertise that they were still alive so fact we haven’t heard from them not a surprise
They escaped from Alcatraz traveling at Mach 1!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!
What if they didn't know that they had to fill it with air every ten minutes
john and clarence anglin are alive and are in brazil
There was actully 4 but he struggeled to leave
Morris became Zodiac.
the proposed development of san fransico? Bro the plan was to dam the san fran bay and turn it into a fresh water lake
1:58 haha
I have a theory, they were abducted by aliens mid-way trough the escape
I have a theory that a shark ate them. A tiger shark was reported missing from a San Francisco aquarium on the night of the breakout.
Obscure Entertainment So the tiger shark ate the boat too then?? They never found the boat you know.
RapidRambo So he took the boat too then??
Tobias flatøy It was the same tiger shark that was killed in Jaws. Hooper says its like a garbage can and will eat anything. Escape from Alcatraz and Jaws are part of a shared movie Universe.
Obscure Entertainment thanks for sharing that, even tough it is not true, it is an intresting theory
what if they tied the raft behind the boat that takes the guards back to shore ;)
4:00
If they can do it then so can Ice btw
Hi
There was four the forth man was the one who thought of the plan but he was left behind because he was too slow
BankableMango60 Actually, Morris was the mastermind behind the plan. West was the one who was left behind.
I could’ve sworn that the mythbusters didn’t make it.
