ウィリアム・モリス「モダンデザインの父」が自分と妻のために友人のフィリップ・ウェッブと設計した邸宅。中世のゴシック調を模した“素朴な”デザイン。ネオ・ゴシック様式の建築で、内部はロセッティやバーン=ジョーンズが装飾を担当した。アートとインテリアが一体になるという“装飾”。アーツ＆クラフツ運動の目的は、「中世の手仕事に帰り、生活と芸術を統一すること」ですが、それは、インテリアとアートが一体になる、ということも意味しているのでしょう。
現在はナショナル・トラストが管理し、一般公開している。
ウィリアム・モリス（1834 - 1896年）
イギリスのヴィクトリア朝末期に生まれ、壁紙やインテリアファブリックスの内装デザインで活躍した人物。アーツ＆クラフツ運動の提唱者として有名。
彼の有名な言葉：「役に立たないものや、美しいとは思わないものを家に置いてはならない」
William Morris lived in this "Red House" for 5 years! Red House is a significant Arts and Crafts building located in London, England. Co-designed in 1859 by the architect/friend Philip Webb and the designer William Morris, it was created to serve as a family home for Morris. Construction was completed in 1860. William Morris lived here for 5 years. Red House remained a private residence for various individuals from 1866 until 2002, during which period various alterations were made to the interior design. In 1950 it was designated a Grade I listed building by English Heritage. From 1952 to 1999 the architect Edward Hollamby lived at the House, initiating attempts at preservation and establishing the Friends of Red House charity in 1998. In 2003, the National Trust purchased the property, undertaking a project of conservation and maintaining it as a visitor attraction with an accompanying tea room and gift shop.
