Diosdado Macapagal has Spanish and Mexican ancestry and he fluent speak Spanish, born in Lubao, Pampanga. His family was very poor, he used go to school barefooted, because he is very intelligent and interested to go to School his cousin Rogelio de la Rosa an actor helped him to study Law at University of Santo Tomas, Manila. His first wife was died of hungry, they called themselves "patay gutom". (according to the artcl.)
At least if I am correct, diosdado macapagal would have still been eligible to run for president in the 1992 elections since he was never inaugurated under the 1987 constitution.. he was originally inaugurated under the 1935 constitution and will be inaugurated again under the 1973 constitution
If he ever does that, that would be the biggest political comeback in Philippine history: Diosdado Macapagal (1961-1965, 1992-1997, died in office) But I guess he was too old by that time.
During his time, the Philippines was second to Japan as economic powerhouse. Philippines was once a model of development and second only to Japan among east Asian economies. In the 1960s, when South Korea was a land of peasant, the Philippines was one of Asia's industrial powerhouses. It produced consumer goods, processed raw materials and had assembly plants for automobiles, televisions and home appliances. Chemical plants produced drugs. Scrap metal was imported and made into steel for ships and factories produced cement, textiles and fertilizer. After Marcos tookover with his martial law for 20 year dictatorship, the economy went downhill. In the 1970s and 80s, the Philippines declined while its neighbors grew and became one of the poorest non-Communist governments in Southeast Asia. The gains made in the 1950s and 60s were lost to corruption, cronyism, and mismanagement during the Marcos years and ineptitude of the Aquino years Now the Philippines is sometimes referred to as "sick man of Asia" and a "Latin-style banana republic in the South China Sea." Its per capita income is about one tenth of that of Taiwan. Many of its most talented people work overseas.
Wrong. Marcos didn't sabotage the economy. It was Cory Aquino. Cory sold government owned enterprises to the Oligarchs and her cronies. She didn't liberalize the economy enough (60/40 Foreign Ownership Rule), number of illegal settlers around Manila quintupled, and the infamous Mendiola Massacre. Marcos built infrastructure projects more than any other Presidents with the exception of Duterte. Look at Manila during the 60s and 70s. We were the envy and were the true Pearl of the Orient. It only took 20 years for the once beautiful city into a hellhole. If Manila can recover from World War II then for sure Manila can be even better thanks to rapid advances in technology.
@@pungolay6586 yes. It's true. Marcos has plenty of achievements and infrastructures and he did all of this things for the benefit of all Filipinos in the Philippines. And he is the one who save ninoy from firing squad. Bcoz he is accused being a traitor. Knasuhan ng treason. Hindi sila malinis tulad ng iniiisip ng iba. All politicians may bahid ng dumi.
