Small steps in regenerative agriculture: pasture planting and rotational grazing. I am working with my flock of Dorper sheep, beef cattle, and chickens (mostly my sister's work there) to restore pasture health through rotational grazing. Another regenerative agriculture practice that I implement is small scale pasture planting. I choose portions of pasture with low soil fertility and use a small seeder to plant crimson clover and rye grass.
Rotational grazing my cattle (sheep and cows) are my primary means of restoring soil health. Regenerative agriculture is really a series of small actions performed consistently. Regnerative agriculture is also as much about what you do not do as what you do. I do not use any chemical fertilizers on my pasture. The manure from sheep, cows, and chickens works simultaneously to restore soil health and heal my land.

This channel chronicles my journey as a sheep farmer from the very beginning. My primary occupation is in business management. In 2020, I discovered the principles of regenerative agriculture and embarked on a journey with the end goal of building a profitable small farm on 23 acres by 2027. Thank you for joining the journey!

As you work hard your land heals, as your land heals and you feel joy. That joy is a gift from God that others may not understand. It is the same with us as the pasture, slowly our good qualities start to grow and take over. I could go on....

Love the video the banter between you and your sister is great. If you have one of those days when you just feel "phew" then you could try this solution. It has to be a dry day, place a blanket on your lawn/grass and lie on it looking up at the sky. No peeking around just look straight up. After a while you will feel as if your floating. Its one of my favourite ways of recharging my batteries and its free. As always thanks for posting

That's true, this is one of the most timeless and pure ways to relax and feel joy. Cloudgazing we call it. I miss the days when I had more time for it. But on the bright side, the busy nature of my current life gives extra sweetness to those moments of rest, and keeps me (mostly) from slipping into bad habits that waste time.

There's a reason the expression "bride by June" exists. ;) The old timers will tell you it's the only time of year where you could take a break to relax just a little bit and have a nice wedding. Then hopefully the missus would be able to complete a pregnancy just in time to help with the spring planting. XD You gotta love the dedication and planning methods of the good old timers! Never fails to make me smile.

We had a disabled sheep also. We called him Whispering Hope. He was a fighter, so we supported him well. His Mama was very supportive, breastfeeding him when he is able to stand up. He falls easily, and unable to stand on own, but once we get him up, he can eat well. We thought he will get stronger when he is older because he was staying up longer. But one day, he just became weak and died in a few days. We still remember Whispering hope.

That is such a sad story. But somehow really sweet. I think this is a good analogy for how God sometimes makes people who are weak and whose life is sadly short, but he still loves them as deeply as a mother and knows their name and does not forget them.

I have two hay burners. Two quarter horses which are pets. Whiny would not object to a another horse to pal around with. It was a Jersey steer that I had for years that followed me around in the pasture.

I like seeing how the land heals, and how you are using the chickens in that process too! Sometimes I just crave a "non-regenerative" crispy fried chicken sandwich (my weakness). : ) Love the small horse and Tina too.

Oh thank heavens that's a pony...I thought that was a dorper mutation there for a minute. I thought, "Grace...you're either doing something REALLY wrong....or something REALLY right".
I'm finishing off a subway spicy italian with sweet onion sauce right now. There's enough highly processed meat product in there to kill a T-Rex but I love them a little too much to stop, lol.

Since you are into fashion and you are learning to be outside, look into hats and etc that can protect your skin.
Prior to urban life, every one wore hats, I loved looking at Ellis Island all the different looks and styles. They were practical, and in Texas they are needed.
    But, they were not ugly
I like some I see that have a flap to save the neck. Creativity and style. And that means less chemicals.....

The thing is, many other countries don’t try to control pollution. Question, I noticed in Aldi , there selling lamb from Australia, your thoughts.

    • @summerlove0426

Aldi is a Germany owned company. #BuyAmerican

    • @theShepherdess

I was watching a video that stated the US has a 30% production deficit when it comes to lamb, so imports are the only way to satisfy the demand :(. I plan to make a video about it, but food imports are concerning and will only increase as the American farmer ages and our farming population declines.
Uphold our infrastructure with you dollar and buy local food!
      Thanks for the question!

So Tina shares the same fate as you... no other boys allowed in the pasture. At least you both have Winnie for company. :-) Great idea on working the chickens through the pasture for some heavy grazing and manure to help bring up that section of pasture quality.

I have a "Tina" too, but her name is Four. She's right at 4 months old.. Her mom hasn't stopped producing milk and still let's Four and her brother nurse. But Four has had a lot of issues with parasites. So much so that the vet said that she would probably never build up an immunity against the parasites (barberpole worms and tapeworms, in particular) and we should cull her. I simply can't. I understand that our sheep are livestock, not pets, but this was our first lambing and Four was the runt to begin with and I can't help but to think that maybe we didn't do everything the right way, exasperating the growth gap she was already facing in order to catch up with the rest of the lambs. So, Four won't ever be bred and will remain on our homestead as a pet.

Would a small solar panel help slow the rate that you have to change over your batteries

    • @theShepherdess
      @theShepherdess  2 года назад

Yes! I just setup a solar trickle charge system for my batteries and it fixes me about 2x the time between changing.
      Great suggestion!

Agree don't cull her. We had a calf that was a runt and we just kept her with the herd. Then one day she took to growing. You never know.

I certainly wouldn’t cull a smaller lamb if it’s mom had died which put it at a disadvantage, you cull stuff for genetic reasons
