Crafted Workshop Got started with this build today. Couldn’t get too far with out the plans but I’m excited with my progress on the live edge slab and to tackle this project. Any word on when you’ll have the plans available?
Thanks! I definitely thought about it but it would have been way more work and just wasn't necessary. Sealing the edges definitely helped make that possible.
This is like Hollywood dropping the award favorites near the end of the year. Johnny busting out the RUclips build of the year. I know there have been more complicated things you have done, but this is my favorite just for the overall aesthetics and pillow safety.
Glad to see someone using ash wood. The emerald ash borer has decimated these trees throughout the USA and it's nice to see the wood from these trees used for something other than mulch or firewood. Thx Johnny👌🏾
Found your channel ages ago. Became a supporter. Just wanna say you make amazing content. I’m so addicted to your channel. Thank you for being awesome!
Gorgeous bed! The wife must be happy :) Love the technique of burning the live edges....I'm definitely going to add this one to my bag of tricks. And, I clearly love the combo of black and a live edge in the bedroom....
I’ve seen most of your videos, and I have to say that this one raised the bar. Fantastic work, and a really excellent end product. I love the combination of the slab headboard and black frame, and I’ll echo the comments that say I’m really glad you didn’t try to fill that gap with epoxy.
Beautiful bed. I’m new to the channel and I’ve just started getting into wood working thanks for all the tips. It’s pretty cool you are so close to home for me. I’m in Franklin NC
This is by far the best woodworking book I have ever read, *TopFineWoodworking. Com* . My woodworking teacher endorses it to all of his students. I am impressed how authors managed to write very detailed topics. I`m surprised by the material and didn`t have a tough time following the lessons..
This turned out so well, Johnny! All of the sudden, I want to build another bed. I like those center support fasteners, too. I didn't know they existed when I made mine haha.
This is one of the BEST projects I've ever seen on RUclips!!!! Absolutely fantastic bud!!! As always God bless, have a joyous Holiday Season, and Dirty Jersey out!!!!
Powermatic stuff is awesome...however...I was faced with upgrading to a bigger jointer and planer recently as well. I ended up going with the Hammer A3-41...16" on both the jointer and the planer and I upgraded to their helical head. HOLY CRAP is it awesome!! It is crazy having 16" of jointing capacity. I can't get over how nice it is to use. I find myself using it even when I don't necessarily have to lol. Anyway, good choice with the Powermatic.
Nice work Johnny! I'm in the process of building a similar bed and am curious what angle you went with to tilt the headboard back? I'm using a walnut panel and think if I use a good angle I could prop pillows against it for watching tv in bed.
That bed is AWESOME Bro! Black polyurethane good stuff definitely have to look into that stuff.never knew that existed happy holidays to you and yours bro!
I love the bed but I do have a question for you... To me it seems that it would have been a lot easier to use a router sled jig and some shims to flatten the slab wood. What are your thoughts? It turned out beautiful but it just seems a little more difficult and less safe the way you did it...
My heart is racing watching you run the jointer.. I was using my jointer over the weekend without a guard, wood kicked back and bye bye to part of my middle finger.. so yes be EXTREMELY careful using a jointer without a guard..
Crafted Workshop I should’ve said that I was using push block as well.. the push block got yanked out of my hands when the wood kicked back.. couldn’t tell you how that happened but I did
I had a bed frame with those legs that angle out like that once. I beat the hell out of it with a sledge hammer after about a year. My little toe was smiling the whole time! Now every bed frame must have inset legs.
@@craftedworkshop Well you're a young guy still so getting up in the middle of the night is not an issue for you yet if you know what I mean. I love the headboard though, very nice.
i can't say it's been as fun to watch anyone else make a bed before.. **rimshot** my only gripe is all the jump cuts at the end. next time you could put some B-roll over top of the jump cuts or do a voiceover separately. love this though!

I love this idea. I cut my own slabs and i have a piece of oak or box elder that'll look good like this. Love it man!!!
Are the plans available yet?
I’ll be finishing them today!

Hey Steve, I should be able to get these done on Monday!
I’m glad you didn’t fill the center of the headboard with epoxy. The negative space is a lot more interesting. Beautiful work, as always.
Thanks! I definitely thought about it but it would have been way more work and just wasn't necessary. Sealing the edges definitely helped make that possible.

Hah, thanks man. It's definitely one of my favorite builds of the year, and I built a LOT of stuff this year, hah!
Glad to see someone using ash wood. The emerald ash borer has decimated these trees throughout the USA and it's nice to see the wood from these trees used for something other than mulch or firewood. Thx Johnny👌🏾
Definitely! I plan to use a ton more Ash in the future. It's extremely inexpensive as well, definitely a win-win.
That slab looks so good in contrast to the dark of the rest of the frame! Love it!
The black stain on the oak combined with the live edge headboard is 🔥!
Thanks man! Super happy with the way it turned out.
That black poly looks friggin amazing. This came out incredible.
Beautiful contrast of the black with the gloss and live edge wood

I’m honestly obsessed with this bed.
Absolutely wonderful build! Thank you for sharing it with us. The black tinted poly came out so nice

Love the bed. Makes me want to rethink our bed.
Can’t wait to get my hands on these plans!
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful... Your Job. Congratulations!!!!
Turned out awesome, man! That slab was gnarly, though. Nice job getting it into workable shape!
Thanks man! It was a ton of work and produced a ridiculous amount of sawdust.

Thanks a lot! I'm really stoked with the way this one came together.

Johnny this looks sick man!! Ebonized wood looks great and UGH the head board! You killed it!
Thanks a lot! Definitely stoked with how it came together.
DUDE ! tooo sexy! this has got to be my new favourite build you have done! Love the design decision of burning the live edge .
Thanks man! Reminded me I need to add that card to the video that inspired that idea, hah.
Dude - that was your best video yet!
Thanks Ron!

Hey men,, i love your product..
Nice work Johnny! I'm in the process of building a similar bed and am curious what angle you went with to tilt the headboard back? I'm using a walnut panel and think if I use a good angle I could prop pillows against it for watching tv in bed.
It would be cool if It had a headstand on both sides that could collapse and you could use the bed as table.
Can you show more of the cleanup required for epoxy?
fantastic build. Also really glad the pillows are gonna be alright
Gotta take care of them pillows! 😂
Pillows are a good priority lol. It's where you start and end your day :)
Hah, gotta keep them in good shape! :)
Cool project, Johnny! I didn't even know black polyurethane was a thing. Nice to know!
Thanks Bruce! It’s definitely cool stuff.
Hey man, great video! Do you have the link to that video for burning the wood and using the resin? I cant find it. Thanks!
another great build Johny!
AND another win for Zach, Zack Johnson :P
Thanks man! And well done :)
hahaha i thought i had you but nope! But yeah Johnny that bed is unbelievable!
Thanks man!
That bed is AWESOME Bro! Black polyurethane good stuff definitely have to look into that stuff.never knew that existed happy holidays to you and yours bro!
Yea me neither! Thanks Joe, happy holiday to you as well!
I love the bed but I do have a question for you... To me it seems that it would have been a lot easier to use a router sled jig and some shims to flatten the slab wood. What are your thoughts? It turned out beautiful but it just seems a little more difficult and less safe the way you did it...
Great job, what kind of wood used?
any word on plans? I'd love to buy em'!
With such a nice bed, you may sleep 1000 times better.
I love this design. I'm actually making it for my wife as a surprise. My one issue... Why use qtr. Sawn wood just to paint it black?
My heart is racing watching you run the jointer.. I was using my jointer over the weekend without a guard, wood kicked back and bye bye to part of my middle finger.. so yes be EXTREMELY careful using a jointer without a guard..
Ouch! Yup, push blocks are a must for sure.
Crafted Workshop I should’ve said that I was using push block as well.. the push block got yanked out of my hands when the wood kicked back.. couldn’t tell you how that happened but I did
Wow, that's terrible!
I had a bed frame with those legs that angle out like that once. I beat the hell out of it with a sledge hammer after about a year. My little toe was smiling the whole time! Now every bed frame must have inset legs.
Hah, I can definitely see that happening!
@@craftedworkshop Well you're a young guy still so getting up in the middle of the night is not an issue for you yet if you know what I mean. I love the headboard though, very nice.
Hah, I'm well hydrated so I'm always up in the night. Thanks!
I love it! But I HAVE to ask, WHO HITS THUMBS DOWN ON VIDEOS LIKE THIS?!?! This world, I tell ya!
People are weird. Thanks man!
Nice work! Where can I find the measurements of oak wood?
Best bed ever !!! Where's the plan's ?????
I crack my toes into my bed enough now as is and that’s right on the corners vertically. I’d be crippled with this one.
Hah! Gotta be nimble during those midnight bathroom runs.
Any word on the plans? Been patiently waiting and ready to pay.
i can't say it's been as fun to watch anyone else make a bed before.. **rimshot**
my only gripe is all the jump cuts at the end. next time you could put some B-roll over top of the jump cuts or do a voiceover separately. love this though!
Thanks! 😂
