Inglourious Basterds (2009): 'How many glasses?' Full Scene
Embed
- Published on Feb 17, 2026
- In Inglourious Basterds, Lt. Archie Hicox (Michael Fassbender)orders "Three glasses" by holding up his index, middle, and ring fingers, which is the American way to count to three. This seemingly minor slip-up, a deviation from the Western European method of starting with the thumb to count to three, immediately exposes him as a British agent, not a German officer, and leads to the tragic unraveling of the Basterds' infiltration.

Movie Description: In German-occupied France, young Jewish refugee Shosanna Dreyfus witnesses the slaughter of her family by Colonel Hans Landa. Narrowly escaping with her life, she plots her revenge several years later when German war hero Fredrick Zoller takes a rapid interest in her and arranges an illustrious movie premiere at the theater she now runs. With the promise of every major Nazi officer in attendance, the event catches the attention of the "Basterds", a group of Jewish-American guerrilla soldiers led by the ruthless Lt. Aldo Raine. As the relentless executioners advance and the conspiring young girl's plans are set in motion, their paths will cross for a fateful evening that will shake the very annals of history.

No phone in the sight, just people are living in movement.
good old times!
only lovely friends playing who am i?
or dying in this case
Most of them have a cigarette, we just went from one addiction to another, i for one prefer the phone in my hand than a cigarette
😂😭😭😭
What this scene is only 10 mins? Watching it felt like an eternity of how tense and uncomfortable it was
They dont make movies like this anymore
@Brbar627honestly they don’t because the audience is all brain rotten by short form content
I felt the same. Really surprised that is about only 10 minutes. Thought it was at least 20 minutos due to how nervous I was.
Because the beginning and the end were cut here. The scene in the pub starts much earlier and lasts a total of 30 minutes.
@lichtbringer2289 I was only talking about this conversation, I’m aware the scene in the pub is longer
Moral of the story: Always order five glasses when you are confused
Nah bro moral of the story is always be the guy in the corner with the submachine gun
@Nomed183bro😂
😂😂😂😂
Isnt it because he held his 3 fingers, the wrong way round? Like a Brit would?
@donutmoron Yeah
What a lovely couple of friends. I hope they enjoy their night together!
Not in a Tarantino movie.
😂😂😂😂
Oh no 😂
it was such a great night it might as well have been their last !
yeah that night was full of blasts ! 😂
Everyone is talking about Christoph Waltz's role as Hans Landa, but August Diehl, despite appearing very little in the film as Major Hellstrom, gave a performance that was just as good as Christoph Waltz's, in my opinion.
Pure German Spirit. More than perfekt.
i think he would have nailed role of Landa too
Yeah definitely played the MOST perfect German. Legend of an actor.
i fkin hate how tarantino decide to give him so little screentime
FACTS
It's remarkable that one director has the guts to carefully introduce a couple of protagonists just to kill them off in a very realistic and believable encounter gone wrong
Could be a perfect director for some GoT episodes.
Every tarantino's movie ever.. All these "star" actors, not single of them are given plot armor like any other movies which usually we knew this star actor would made it out alive or even if they'd be killed, it'll be in the ending.
@trololobochum In that they're all equally shite as each other? Yes, I agree. Tarantino and GoT do deserve each other.
And thus wonderfully transition the story back to the loveable main character
The way he was disappointed with his three fingers because he did enjoy their company and showing all of that with facial expression which says it all is insane act performance
stolen comment. Think of something original lil bro
Germans do not show three fingers like that
@FrhnIhsnFR How not? Ordering 3 beers in Deutschland is pointing thumb, index and middle finger. I was taught that during Oktoberfest by Deutsche themselves.
Bastian Schweinsteiger celebrated goal scoring that way too.
I was talking about Hicox
i think it was all on purpose he counted 3 men aside him didnt order himself and was testing the 3
Notice that the card game shows how the German colonel has excellent skill of deduction. This adds to the tension of the scene by showing how sharp he is.
non è un colonnello , sturmbannfhurer - è MAGGIORE ..😁
You gotta get out of the house man
You are right
8:52 'by all means captain' that reply is cold af
I love it because it basically implies that the Gestapo officer had one English parent and one German parent. I've never met anyone who could speak two languages like a native of both countries who didn't have one parent from each country.
@StopLookingAtMyAmygdalathe German high command was often times fluent, even accent free in English. As we know from this scene, the Sturmbannführer (SS-Rank, not Gestapo btw.) is also very knowledgeable, we can assume, that he also learned English somewhere
@StopLookingAtMyAmygdala Well hello there. Unless you simply mean people born before 1980 or so, your theory collapses. I have all 8 great-grandparents from one slavic country, and speak english like a native thanks to learning and hearing it (mainly thanks to youtube) and speaking it often for almost my whole life (can't be sure for the first 4, obviosuly).
@RexOlafusVidulusMagnuswasap maboi
@jemand_NachnameI'm assuming many officers learnt English and French in order to be able to better interrogate POWs, and able to talk to the opposing side in general, either when surrendering or when offering a surrender. Being able to understand intercepted messages quickly is another factor. Considering that both English and French are not that different from German, it makes sense to learn them to increase qualifications.
I like that when Hicox raised the 3 fingers at 5:56, Hammersmark's eyes widened as if she was shocked, like, "Oh no, we're so dead."
And the face of disapointment from Hellstrom after all he was Landa's protegé, he was just..toying with the Bastards there. The 3 fingers kinda spoiled all the roleplaying that Hellstrom was enjoying so much
I didn't even catch that!!!
No they didn't. You're seeing things. The camera cut before you could see her react. The only change her eyes make is looking at his hand. They do not widen.
Moral of the story: if you are not a great spy, then don’t spy.
The captain was skeptical from the first. That’s why he intruded.
I don't speak a word of German, I cannot understand a thing that is said without the subtitles, but I can hear the British in his accent.
Fassbender was a superb piece of casting. His German is superb, but not mother-tongue, and not obviously British-accented (or anything else) either.
Somehow he made himself sound perfectly German with a posh Brit accent. Amazing acting
I am German. Fassbender speaks German without any errors and using the right terms and expressions. But a German can tell after a couple of words from his accent that he is English.
@marcobreiling3559 I think all the actors in this scene are amazingly talented. The performances are top-notch. I think, he has intentionally left a small accent in his speech. In the scene, the young soldier questions his accent.
I UNDERTAND.
The look on Michael Fassbender's face when he realizes he's not going to get out of there alive, and then, resigned and having moved past the moment, lighting a cigarette and taking a sip of whiskey. Excellent performance by a great actor.
he's a roman centurion, he does well :D
Yes this, but I also got from the look that he also realised he was dealing with a psychopath who was willing to die readily if it meant that they were going with him too: re "Maximillian will be an orphan" monologue. That was cold af 😢
August Diehl is underrated in this movie.. what a performance
Best German male actor in my opinion.
@L0W1XTHXN better than Waltz? Waltz has dual citizenship with Austria but still
@MrAlexnastase97 Waltz was born and raised in Vienna and has said that he identifies as Austrian, even though he had German citizenship before Austrian because his father was German. So I count him as Austrian, as he does so himself. Nonetheless a phenomenal actor, of course.
If you want to see more of August Diehl, there's much I could recommend. I'd say: Watch the third season of "Der Pass" - absolutely terrifying performace (and overall the best German TV series ever)!
Who did underrate him?
Some scenes in this movie are just amazing..who would think that those 3 fingers hold such significance..
Those 3 fingers are extremely significant, we in Britain & various other countries just dont hold up 2 fingers & a thumb, we just don't, a a Pole held up 2 fingers & a thumb recently & i looked at him like he was a mongol, its just un British.
@Coniungere basically the same thing )))
@ConiungereYou're making a way bigger deal out of it than it is. You're not a SS soldier noticing a British spy.
A German here: When I watched that movie in (at? 🤔) cinema I immediately realized he had made a mistake with his three fingers and had blown his cover.
@toffonardi7037What's wrong with being a Mongol?
Those 3 fingers killed many
The German 3 u refering to?
@Q.0-c7fin germany or i think europe in general you show ,,three“ with your thumb instead of the middlefinger :)
@Q.0-c7fringfinger*
@dondocyou mean the ringfinger
8:05 I like how he said nein-nein-nein-nein-nein
I can't watch enough of this scene. The only flaw is that there was so little screentime of August Diehl 😅
The german actor was so cold and was causing a lot of apprehension. While Landa was more of a manipulative officer, this one embodied the ruthless and straightforward kinda military officer.
6:11 that little “yea” is so perfectly delivered
WAIT I JUST REALIZED HE SAY "YEA", ENGLISH NOT GERMAN.
Its probably german, were not always pronounce it perfect sometimes its joa or jea@mcbain7392
I think he say "ja" which is german for yes
@mcbain7392 that is a very german pronounciation of "ja", he's still speaking german when he says it.
7:50: "And at this range, I'm a real Frederick Zoller."
Great line.
hi🤣
One of the best scenes in cinema history
You haven't seen much italo Western didn't you?😂
I wonder what technique that bald guy used for teleportation? 0:30
Its obviously seconds later
I love this movie but there's got to be way more dead bodies at the 9:54 shot there.
7:52 Frederick Zollahhhhh 😂😂😂
"Haha" ❤
The tension in this scene is mind blowing
he never stopped playing , the scotch was just another clue
The way he calls ERIC
poor Eric
Hellstrom's facial expressions after he becomes certain he is sitting with a spy are outstanding!
He instantly recognized Hugo but played it down 😂
It is intriguing to note the subtle parallel he draws between King Kong’s arrival and the arrival of Africans in the United States.
stills monkeys you know
King Kong was about Africans.
It is not subtle at all😂
@kalalakapaydoubtful
"Subtle"
Hellström knew that he’s likely to die there. He saddled up anyway and faced death with humor.
My favourite scene of the movie, I remember watching it in the cinema you could cut the tension in the theatre with a knife.
5:55 that's why you're here
This was the moment that he knew, he fucked up.
Yes sir
Yep
People with dark circles are the best actors.
The moment Fassbender told him he was intruding, it further solidified they were hiding something. But the fatal blow in the end was the three finger gesture 💀💀
The best moment in German cinema: when I exclaimed "oh shit" and the entire audience obviously had no idea why that was the crucial mistake until it was explained later in the film. 🤣
Tarantino understands Hitchcock’s “bomb under the table” method for suspense
I am german and when I have seen the 3 fingers it felt wrong. that was the moment when he knew that this are foreigners. You can see it in his face too. He went quiet and knew what he would do and where it ends. Tarantino. Wow
Curious, how did they usually put up 3 fingers?
unskillgaming Ah I see, thanks for clarifying. I also use thumb, middle and index.
I'm German and I use index, middle and ring wtf?
@unskillgaming It's British, not American, Americans are descendants of Britain, remember, we sent our criminals to the 13 colonies, who then turned on us to gain independence.
@Coniungeretens of thousands of proper British working men and women immigrated to the 13 colonies before independence. Bro wtf😂. Learn your history.
21. Century’s best movie scene so far. Props to all actors & actresses attributed.
I find hilarious they go through so much effort with what feels like a 15 minute story about Piz Palü and other things just to give themselves away in 1 second shortly after
1:24 I think after Hellstrom’s line ‘not Aunt Frida,’ it seems Fassbender almost broke character - you can tell he was trying hard not to laugh.
The casting of this guy was really good! He is somewhat sympathetic but has this eerie, creepy aura that keeps you on the edge.
9:38 hahah that was personal with the knife
It's my fav part of the scene, so visceral.
The tension building in this film is insane wtf💀
I like how he appears on the side… and still has a card on his forehead 😂🤣
6:00 - he knows.
He knows he knows.
He knows he knows he knows.
Nell' esatto momento in cui abbassa le dita la smorfia del " azz... ho sbagliato " è favolosa
This is what happens when you go for a test without any preparation .
How dare RUclips put ads in the middel of a masterpiece like this
Firefox on your mobile and ad block in extensions.
Ublock, adblock, one who must not be named.
The most interesting thing about this scene is that supposedly the SS Major was already onto them from the beginning. He noticed Hiccox's accent, and the whole excuse they gave for it was obvious bullshit to him since the Major knew where it came from.
He essentially toyed around with them, pretending to be oblivious and playful, but as soon as Hiccox made that 'fatal' mistake with the three-fingered hand gesture, the Major felt like his own fun had been ruined, so he got serious and ended the facade, as he was annoyed by how sloppy Hiccox had been for a spy. This goes along with Landa killing Hammersmark because she also wasn't playing along with his silly games, and was also overly sloppy in her lies.
Yeah, and not to mention that he knew who Stiglitz was right?
Not only that he beat the card game first try to show them that he’s a professional in collecting informations
I like your analysis, but I don't agree. I think he genuinely fell for their ruse, until he saw the way Hilcox put up the three fingers. I believe that's the reason he was so adamant when he said that they were both dying that night. His pride and ego were so wounded after realizing he had almost been tricked, that the only way he could feel he had gotten even was by making sure he killed Hilcox and the rest of them before dying himself.
@graciaabumohor5897 Thats my thoughts as well.
@graciaabumohor5897the ss was just a nasty c**t who was just being an ss nasty c**t until the British guy gave it all away with the thumb & 2 fingers, she saw the flaw as soon as the ss spotted it, she too knew it was game over & it was kicking off, the ss guy was bad ass. This movie was top dollar. Questing Tarrantino is a remarkable director.
One of the greatest moments in cinema. Epic.
The game was just a ruse to fish for clues indirectly...
6:12 I like how he gets angrier and angrier... 😅 And then pure frustration.
This felt like a lifetime watching, so good.
I’ve never seen a scene of a movie this much on social media as this one
August Diehl is an amazing actor.
1:56 best moment ever 😂😂😂😂😂😂
😂
@schutz_staffelSS😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂
Dürfte ich mich vielleicht erkundigen?!
as usual only quentin can made not boring 10 mins dialogs
After he said dry glacier it all went down
a nose just poked me...
9:35 "Say Auf Wiedersehen to your Nazi balls" gets me everytime hahaha
The handing of the shots with his fingers in the rim would have triggered me straight into the gun battle
The whole movie is just intense! ALL the actors are playing FANTASTIC! I LOVE the movie!
one of the greatest scenes ever
Everytime I watch this scene im like please don't eff it up this time😂
August Diehl is a top actor 👍🏽
5:57 The "You just did that?" stare
1:55 When your boss hosts a meeting, tells you he "had to" cut your salary, then says "it's time for some fun teambuilding games."
4:17 Stiglitz was very angry with Hellstrom lol
August Diehl so underrated
The best of Tarantino ... (and thanks to all good actors). Tarantino is a genius.
A Movie always rocks when Till Schweiger has nothing much to say.....🤣
Seriously good scene.. like other said. Man it was done so well I was sat there watching it stressing like I was sat there with the. It felt like ages too😂😂 thats how u know the shit is good
“I hope you don’t mind if I go out speaking the Kings.” EPIC
Both great spies.
3:53 a foreshadowing of Tarantino’s film "Django Unchained”
Maybe.
Haben die hier die Szene im Amerikanischen Film auch auf Deutsch gemacht, ist ja legendär
the best scene. he could have turned and left but he came to the table and died but he didn't let him go
August Diehl was on par with Christoph Waltz, he is terrifying as SS Officer
congratulations for bringing the full scene!
We can see how the bartender keeps an eye on them throughout the whole conversation and we can deduce that it is because from his angle he can perfectly see Hicox pointing his gun at the Major from the beginning.
Fine, I'll watch this film again
Even if you're not German speaker, it's obvious that whereas everyone's speech is flowing effortlessly, Hicox stumbles, saying some words like "stören" or "Sturmbahnführer".
Also, I like how Hicox is the only one who is completely unaware of what's coming after his 3 fingers and looks almost innocent, while the others are getting ready
5:56 "sht this table full of american"
It ended with a hell of chain reaction.
Btw the one who says say auf Wiedersehen zu you naz boss is "Till schweiger "
One of the most knowable and iconic actors in germany
3:58 my heart skipped a beat wtf
Murica is basically what the third reich would have been if they won the war with the only difference in the way they treated their minorities. Germany wanted to get rid of them while murica wants to profit from them and/or get rid like they did with those american-liberian ppl. Thats why murica is just as evil as the germans were back then. They have just more success
@unknwnGh0stthat is so dumb on so many levels. The racial history sure is terrible but the US is not living in the 1700s anymore. If you want backwards thinking modern day nations then look to russia
@unknwnGh0st What the hell are you going on about? Are you one of those people who call all people of the past evil and only modern day liberals are morally good in anyway? Well at least people of the past could make thier countries function. They put you into a position that made it possible for you to be judgemental towards them. Get real buddy.
@MarcinKowalski-d4r no, im saying that the whole country of the united slums of murica is a evil shthole that ist just viewed as the good guys™ bcuz they won the war and forced a certain narrative upon the world. They commited the same atrocities, the same crimes against their own ppl, they disguise themselves as a democratic country when in reality the country is run by corporations through a 2 Party system. They invade countries for ressources. Germans called that lebensraum, muricans call that "defending our democratic values" 😂😂 remember all the terror organisations u guys financed and trained? Almost all of them 😂😂😂😂😂 only to get them oil dollarZz 🤑🤑🤑 so many parallels between the third reich and murica. Muricans even experimented with deadly diseases and bioweapons on their OWN ppl 😂😂😂😂 but mostly minorities so 🤷♂️ who gives a sht right?
i mean ..
moral of the story just say you want three glasses without and hand gestures
he was exposed as British agent way before he ordered "three glasses", this gestapo officer was simply stunned and disappointed and took it as personal insult. His idea was actually to make them drunk, that's why he did not ordered scotch.
Exactly. He knew Stiglitz, he recognized him and toyed with him especially with the shoulder knocking and all. The 3 Fingers were just the final Nail in the Coffin.
I don’t understand then why he didn’t act like he believed them and just go to the soldiers to tell them, or somehow signal them, meanwhile going to some safer zone to prepare for the shooting. It's very dumb to confront them while being outnumbered and one meter apart. Just poor scriptwriting.
@Narragorth his idea was to make them drunk, because he was drinking beer while they had scotch. I guess it's not that easy to interact or make signals to other german soldiers when they are in a chill mode and quite drunk already :D
@mainframe9374 But like they wanted him to leave, and he had a chance to just get up and then expose them from a safer distance. But okay, your version sounds logical.
Best scene of the movie, hands down
I’m that stoned I was waiting for magneto lol
They probably translated Tarantino’s lines with DeepL
Hitchcock was the master of suspense, but Tarantino took it to the next level - those swings of suspicion and the constant tension throughout the 10-minute scene "Does he know? Was he convinced?" make this scene unforgettable and highly magnetic.
3 glasses 🙋♂️
Aldo was right : basement is a trap ...
1:42 that stare to that girl by Stiglitz
This film is great for a Hollywood production because it is filmed multilingually.
did they change the riff during the flashback of the guy getting lashed by a whip
"ERIK!" :D
"DER 33-JAHRE! UND FRISCHE GLÄSE!!🗣"
I always thought it was because he couldn't pronounce the glottal R. Didn't realise it has something to do with which fingers went up.
