  • Bits from three TV documentaries about the Brabham BT 46 b Formula One racing car, designed by Gordon Murray for the Brabham/Alfa Romeo team, for the 1978 Formula One season.
    Gordon Murray, Peter Wright and Bernie Ecclestone talk about the 1978 F1 season and ground effect cars (1:44 - 4:58).
    An other video clip from a BBC Four documentary is here:

    *They could've ALLOWED IT, and F1 would probably be going 300mph around hairpin turns by now if so lol.*

      *_"It absolutely DID and WOULD improve racing. Creating a vacuum under the car improves grip, which is one of the main limiting factors in how fast vehicles can go."_*
      I _know_ the theory of it. But how did this improve racing, other than in one race? It didn't. Everyone knew this car would be banned, Gordon Murray included. It was just an engineering exercise. It harked back to the Chaparral 2J and we know what happened to that car.
      The fact is, I see better racing in Formula Ford than in Formula 1. Personally, I like one-design series, like Australia's S5000. When the cars are basically identical, the racing decides who the best driver is (which is the object of the exercise). The ideal formula would combine technical development with close racing. The two have to be balanced. Vacuum cars might be able to pull huge Gs but even if all the cars had it, there's no guarantee the racing would be close.
      People always complain that anyone could drive one of these things and there's no skill anymore, etc.. So what do you want? A car that can be driven by a monkey or something requiring skill? It's like those fans who talk about "tech" development but want to go back to V10s or manual gearboxes.

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 2 года назад +1

      @@cybertree The fact is that we tried unlimited racing in the 1960s and 70s with a thing called CanAm. It was good for a few years but it was dominated by McLaren and eventually, Porsche. If you weren't in one of those team, you stood little chance at all. In the end they called the Porsche 917/30, "the car that killed CanAm". People can jizz off all they like about how fast it was in a straight line but the fact was, the racing was _boring._
      The next year, CanAm had to face reality and introduce rules. They didn't want to do it but falling interest and plummeting revenue left them with no choice.

    • @cybertree
      @cybertree 2 года назад

      @@thethirdman225 I hear what you mean, it definitely lessens the engineering challenge in other areas *at first*, however everything is relative, and if everyone is using fans, it only creates a level playing field to out-do/drive your opponents at even higher speeds (i.e. who can utilize the fan the best, maybe they could limit the amount of time your fan can be turned on so the drivers have to use it at their expert discretion) I genuinely want to see a no-limits (within reason) F1. If one team dominates it until the end of time, so be it, they used the parameters best period. I'll be the first to admit I went from loving large engine manual gearboxed vehicles to appreciating lighter turbo-charged PDK gearboxed vehicles. I'm an engineering/skill fan too, I love the trickle-down technology effect F1 has on production cars due to so many restrictions, they're a good thing. I just think they should do a special event where each company can be mostly unlimited.

  • @youbob28

    Yes, I meant Group B. And making it unlimited would have only made it more deadly. That said, I can sympathize with safety rules to slow the cars down and make them safe, but seriously, banning innovation isn't good. F-ducts and double diffusers should be allowed to stay, because larger teams gain an advantage but only until the smaller teams catch up. Constant rule changes only benefit the big teams that can afford to throw everything out and start R&D from the beginning.
