  • Here's an introduction to how to use paradiddles to improve your ghost notes. By playing paradiddle patterns between the hihat or ride and the snare, you can create fun patterns that give you an opportunity to play ghost notes on the snare against a steady 2 & 4 accented backbeat. Each pattern challenges you to balance the loud and soft notes on the snare in different ways.
This video focuses on the single Paradiddle and its permutations played as 16ths and accenting the 2 and 4 each time. To play the grooves I demonstrate in this lesson it's helpful to be able to play the patterns with accents as follows (v represents accents as the angled bracket is verboten):
    v v
    RLRR LRLL (Single Paradiddle)
    v v
    RLLR LRRL (Inverted Paradiddle)
    v v
RRLR LLRL (Diddles at the start)
    v v
    RLRL LRLR (Overlapping Diddles)

And you’re not gonna believe it, I’m doing the quarter notes on the ride cymbal, not 100% yet ,but I’m playing the paradiddle , And keeping the high hat on the two and four!!! And counting Joe!!! I’m doing the same thing with the table the time, Keep in time on the bass drum on the one and a three ,and a high hat on the two and the four, then tapping Right left, for the quarter notes, 1-2-3-4 and eight notes, 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 ,then the 8th note triplets, 1 & a 2 & a 3 & a 4 and of course 16th notes ,1e&a 2e&a 3e&a 4e&a , and I can’t believe it I’m Counting!!!

Hi Michael, that's absolutely brilliant. I'm sure you'll find this a really helpful tool going forward with your drumming. Very often things that seem very challenging when approached one way can click for us when we approach them another way. The key is to try different things. Or you can put things on the side and come back another time too. Glad this clicked for you now. Thanks for the feedback and for your support 😁

Nice video Joe. I'm still working on my left hand and your videos have been a great resource. You seem a bit charged up in this video- must be a sunny day across the pond! Cheers

Hey Todd, thanks. I'm glad you found it useful. I've been knocked out by a certain virus a few weeks back. Maybe a bit of sunshine plus having to rev myself up to make a video worked too well 🤣
