  • Preacher Robert Sheffey cursed the town over a century ago. Since then Ivanhoe's economy fell into ruins and other calamities have occurred. We went to check out what remains of this once-wicked town in Southwest Virginia.

My mom was raised in Ivanhoe in the 50s and 60s so it’s amazing to see that people still appreciate the area! As for fried pies, check out the produce stands in Cana, VA. My father in law brings them to me every time he stops in there.

I live in Ivanhoe in a farmhouse built in 1900 off of Pope Road. These old houses are A LOT OF WORK to upkeep and mine has cost me a lot of money to repair and fix up and still looks pretty beat up. Of local interest: at 12:13 you passed the road that leads up to the abandoned Union Carbide plant. But I would not go up there, it's very overgrown and seems like Copperheads would be thick in there. Ivanhoe is a nice place to live and I have wonderful neighbors who do anything they can to help each other. The curse, from Sheffey or not, is that over the years industry has come and gone from this place taking with them the ability to earn a decent wage. I travel more than 45 minutes each way to work. I prefer to live way out here so I don't mind that but many years back, before modern vehicles and interstates, it was not feasible for the locals of these small towns to travel as far for work. This was their home and the locals have strong ties to this place. I do not blame them for not wanting to leave. Thanks for a making a video that shows how nice it is here. It is obviously not an affluent area and we have our problems and issues like many small rural towns do. Many videos of this area are very disparaging of the people and the places and unfairly show them in a negative light. I watched one where they made it seem like we are ALL making and using Meth (LOL). I'm sure it and most other illegal substances is around here (just like every town in America it seems) but I have never seen it or known of it. Your videos are factual but you do not present in a negative way and that is appreciated.

Robert Sheffey did not utter the word curse., he dusted his shoes and said those things about the hole the town would fall in. I was born in a house right above McCloud's general store building. I had many a good memory there as a boy. One time we lived upstairs in an apartment above that store. The little road you turned around there is the ruins of the Ivanhoe Elementary school that burned down. You missed it because vines and nature had covered the ruins. You also missed the shaft tower that is 175 feet tall that let the men down 1100 feet down into the earth for the lead and zinc mines. You did a wonderful video and Ii thank you from the bottom of the heart. After the so-called curse, The National Carbide co came ther and many a family raised their children. Also the mines from Austinville , merged from underground and they raised many a family. You done a more dignified video. Carbide closed in late 60s.and the mines closed in early 70s due to lack of ore not from a curse. People need to get thatout of their head here or it will always have a shadow over the town. I love this place.

The curse is a lie. Phenomenal place to grow up. My dad helped lead parades in the 60s and 70s on the 4th of July. Ronald is my second cousin hey Ron. 4500 in the early 40’s when Dad grew up and 1500 in the 60s and 70s when we were raised. Boy Scout troop, great elementary school, volunteer fire department, jobs until early 80’s when Gulf and Western owned Aunstinville lead and zinc mines. Environmental wackos and technology probably made it easier to move the place.
My father Earnest Clyde Shinault could have been mayor from the 60s til the 80’s. He helped start the Ivanhoe Civic League and the Jubilee park on the river near the carbide plant site at the New River Trail. There’s some run down old houses for sure but it’s been decades since Ivanhoe had the 4 or 5 country stores and Prices ces department store. Thanks for sharing and would love to see more. I’ve taught school for 40 years an hour away and coached mostly in NC near the Va border.

Tidbt about blue and Masonic Lodges. I come from a family that has a strong Masonic heritage, and I have picked up some interesting facts along the way. A basic Masonic lodge is known as a "blue lodge". The Blue Lodge is where the individuals receive their first three Masonry degrees. In that scenario, blue means special, sacred, wisdom, or perfection.

If you havn't already, you guys need to do a video on Pocahontas Virginia. Be prepared to dig deep. The history is rich and very interesting. Get it from the locals. They'll put you onto the best sources. Visit the mining museum in season when it opens. Also, you'll want to learn about and visit nearby Bramwell, WV, because it has a deep history as well and is forever linked to Pocahontas for reasons that will become evident in your journey.
