I am so happy there are other people who share my love for this composer. He is too underrated and does not get nearly enough play time on classical stations.

I wish there was a forum somewhere dedicated to discussing what is going on with music...classical, vocal/songs, performative, etc. And how radio channels are programming, compared to 40 years ago and before. Keeping historical music alive.

This work was commissioned by the Ithaca (NY) High School Concert band. I was honored to be part of its first performance...

I got to meet him a couple of times. An extraordinary person and a wonderful composer. As far as modernism goes, I think he went his own way. He told me he liked John Cage, as I recall.

Awesome. What an introduction with those clanging bells. One of my favorite Hovhaness compositions. You can really feel the journey with this music. Hovhaness is a much better composer than most (even the celebrated ones) and deserves more playing time.

Incredible. Powerful. The artwork complements the music beautifully. Well done.

Hovhaness understood that simple beauty could be as "modernist" as the farthest-out electronica.
Also, I love how he writes for band! Too many musical establishments neglect the modern concert band.

Patti Smith's favorite composer, her recommendation introduced me to his music.

to hell with the modernist s attack on this music . I think of Giya Kancheli when I listen to this fine underrated composer, his music will survive the test of time

This was a Hovhaness symphony I was unfamiliar with. Wonderful! There seems to be a good deal of his orchestral work around, but I first became familiar with him through his choral settings of psalms. Does anyone know if there are recordings of those anywhere?

I wish not to get sny one upset I do love modernism in music , but I still think Hovhaness had something to say

+vincent stuart Hovhaness was actually a very modern composer, but his modernism went in a very different direction than that of the establishment modernism of the 20th century. He meaningfully and successfully combined many different scales and modes, including eastern ones. This use of many different scales provides a third option for composers between the major-minor straightjacket that had dominated classical music from the middle of the 17th to the last part of the 19th century and the soulless atonality and serialism that dominated the 20th. Debussy had pioneered this third option and Hovhaness extensively developed it.
