Mark IV hands down. Clear, tight, big and punchy. The mark series are amazing. It just takes a little bit of time to dial it in just right. Once you figure out what makes the amp tick, it will never disappoint. Nice post
+duck2587 Thanks man! I'm a big fan of both but right now the Mark series is better for my style and current band Clark Kent Job. Actually I sold that Roadster last week :D ( and it was my second Roadster head...)
hello, I want to know that using overdrive with the roadster in the video, or that advise me to drive my roadster, to achieve a sound Petrucci in suspended animation, thanks and good work !!!!!!!!!!!
The MK IV takes serious time to get into. The shared Bass/Mid on R1 and R2 require calm thinking clarity. This is why some people put down the MK IV and favour IIC and III . If you put proper time and understanding into your IV, it will deliver. None of the channels are a 'compromise' . I ran mine for a while with 4 Mazda high plate dissipation 6v6 ( from Watford Valves ) ....Deluxe with PUNCH. Even used it as a Bass Amp ( R1 only ) with ECC82 (lower gain) in preamp and 4 6L6. It is a TANK. Always sounds like Gods Hammer.
Mark IV all the way. I bought a used Mark IV a couple years ago and just couldn't get it dialed in and it had it just sitting there collecting dust until a couple weeks ago when I switched it back on again after getting some advice about the EQ and other setting and I'm blown away with how good this thing sounds. I run an Ibanez TS out front and the lead channel is just mind blowing with how good it sounds. I'm still working with channel 2 but I think it could be cool for some dirty sounds with some chorus and delay. Channel 1 is that classic Boogie clean which I love.
Thanks or the comment. Yeah Mark IV is tight and Recto is "loose" so is deifinitely needs eq or OD to make it tight if you will. It depends what you are looking for of course.
I tried a roadster, triple rec and a Mark V I went for the mark v it just had THAT sound instantly I also got a 6505 to cover the balls to the walls angry tone. but the Mark V can do this but not as well. just my input
I second the recto can sound much better. Mine sounds brighter less fuzzy like the mk iv. Different preamp tubes and bias the thing properly. simple stuff.
Jesus christ buddy, drop bloody D....and that's about it..........these 2 amps are incredibly versatile and capable of almost any guitar sound you can imagine..if your going to do a demo at least show what the amp is capable of......from clean to all out overdrive and everything in between....................Randall Smith and his team at Boogie put thousands of hours of hard work into these amps............I have the 2 of them and they are both great.....
It sounds like you have the gain pulled. I tried your settings the other day and they sounded great! The treble at 8 is what makes such a great difference here and adds a lot of distortion - it's what I've been missing ... so thanks! I've only tried with Tweed so far but I imagine it will be more punchy and bassy with Full power! :)
+Szymon Kaczmarek (GNOSiS) I don't see any advantage to full power. I run mine on Tweed 100% of the time. It's louder than one can stand. You've got to be playing arenas to need full power, plus Tweed saves your tubes.
Theo Cedar Jones He has the general mid controls on both amps dialed in fairly well. The V shape on the Mark IV 5 band EQ is to tame the mids. Without the V shape on the 5 band EQ, the mids are overbearing. Neither amp sounds overly scooped to my ears.
@@robertmailloux3720 Yes - Nomad 100 combo with mullard preamp tube - but there is a trick. I keep an old thomas organ wah pedal on all the time to counteract the woofy mids of the mesa, plus the neck pickup on my '62 strat - check out my sound at ruclips.net/user/swaybonerocks
Not really. Rectos are naturally boomy, fuzzy, and loose, and there’s not much the tone controls can do about it. Attempting to dial out the mud this way results in an unpleasant upper mid harshness. What Rectos really need is a boost pedal or a tube screamer in front to tighten things up, but in my opinion, they’ll still never be as tight or as mean sounding as a Mark equipped with a 5 band graphic eq.
@@Tomcat82 Both amps have their strong points in my opinion. And even though rectos are known for being loose, I have heard them sound better than this (not boosted, mind you). When I played one they definitely didn't sound this loose, though the one I tried was a reborn model, not a roadster, maybe that's where the difference is?
SonicSound You hit the nail on the head there. The Reborn is the brightest (and IMO, the best sounding) Rec ever made, whereas the Roadster is one of the darkest sounding versions. My brother owns a Reborn, and to him, it slightly edges out his Mark V as his favorite amp, but he still needs a tube screamer to give the Reborn enough upper mids and dial out the fuzz and boominess. Even with the tube screamer, I can’t say I’m particularly impressed with his sound. I still think his Mark V sounds far better (and I think the V is probably the worst sounding Mark amp). For the sake of transparency, though, I should disclose that I’m a certified cork-sniffing IIC++ owner, so take my biased and highly spoiled opinion for what it’s worth.
michael knight Furthermore, these well-played John Petrucci riffs were all in standard tuning...sure, there was some 7-string in there, but it was still a standard-tuned 7-string!
The mark IV is one of the tightest, punchy as fuck amps ever
It’s one of the GOAT’s.

I really like the suspended animation sound! But I think he didn't use any OD in those sounds. Dunno. I'd like to know how he get the sounds...
Mark IV kills. more body, punch and powerful!!
Yeah I'm more like "mark guy" but in the mix there are places for recto sounds definitely!
you absolutely nailed that constant motion tone :)
Post more videos when you can. Everyone loves the Mark IV and could use a good tutorial on how to dial it in. Nice job man

Sweet video and thanks for sharing the settings! I have both of these amps and am always trying new tone settings. :)
Awsome video man. The Mark iv sounded excellent here.
+1 for the DT licks
This video is a great comparison! Killer playing! And the tones!
love the Mark IV !!! Would love to see some more quality videos on it .
Never played through a Roadster, but I have zero regrets with the Mark IV.
Mark IV all the way!!
The Recto was tighter than I expected. That said, the Marks are just awesome.

Both sounded very good, but the Roadster could use a overdrive pedal just to tighten up that low end a bit.
Thanks or the comment. Yeah Mark IV is tight and Recto is "loose" so is deifinitely needs eq or OD to make it tight if you will. It depends what you are looking for of course.
Or an EQ pedal to just get rid of all that boxy garbage in the low mids. Pure mud.
You have two good amps! Keep them !
The mk4 is the only amp I use since years
Mark IV all day, I just acquired an early "B" head, but I still love the Roadster, wouldn't mind having both :)
Mark IV without question.
Mark IV!!!!
roadster has a fuzzy sound the mark 4 has a tighter and beefier sound
Exactly
Mk IV JP EBMM combo sounds unreal
The mark amps always sound clearer and tighter than the rectifiers. I'd take any mark series amp over any rectifier.
Mark iv all day long...the mark series are the best
I have a Mark IV myself and WTF. GREAT amp. GREAT playing. hopefully I can f9 my own vid soon enough
there's definitely a difference. However, both going at same time would be massive.
Dream Theater's Awake album is a Mark amp quad tracked with a Recto. Indeed, it sounds massive.
Mark IV for the win. I'm biased.
I like the Mk iv
Mark IV all day every day.
Mark IV rules all the way, has the clarity none of the rectifiers have.
Nice comparison do you have gain and lead drive pulled on mark 4 ?
Thanks! Sorry I have no idea what the settings were, it's an old video 😀
I tried a roadster, triple rec and a Mark V I went for the mark v it just had THAT sound instantly I also got a 6505 to cover the balls to the walls angry tone. but the Mark V can do this but not as well. just my input
IV ! :)
Mark Iv all 6L6's?

what settings on the mark iv were when you played "pull me under"?
You can see the settings in the video pretty clearly
oh,so those are the settings?sorry.
@@MrTherocker101 yes! no problem
What pickups on 7421? Lead gain pulled on Mark IV? Tweed ot Full power?
Szymon Kaczmarek (GNOSiS) stock pickups. Don't remember the settings on the gain knobs, usually I don't have it pulled. Full power!

Hi! What is the name of the song from the first riff?
John Petrucci - Jaws of Life
Why y'all be scoopin' out the mids on your mesas?? takin' out the best part, makin' it sound like generic metal amp.
Mesa has a lot of mids, you want to scoop them
Do you own one ??

Mark
Too much gain on the roadster. Should back that off a bit
If you still have that Mark IV sell it to me! 🔥🤟🔥

be great if you actually played something resembling a tune..instead of detuned crap.....
That "detuned crap" was all well played Dream Theater licks.
