in our lifes they are so many that our paths will cross in some way and then we go on with our personal journey, but .... there also peaple that we come to know along our lifes journey that we never forget, of what the represent as well as who they are and all the leadership they bestow on us and to the poi t that we want to somehow use ther leadership in the way we do things, the kind of peaple that are larger than life a person like thurman munson.i played baseball in the 70s and I had a few heroes that I tried to b like and thurman was one of them and the other was mickey mantle. i played for 10 years and I'm 55 now and I've never forgot about both of them. alls I can say is, thank god for heroes like thurman and mickey because without them our lives would virtually b meaningless in the things that we try to aco.plish. r.i.p thurman we love ya buddy
We lost him 40 years ago today. A total shock. Clutch, gritty, couldn't stand for a half-assed effort from himself or a teammate. Instrumental in turning the Yanks into winners. I saw him hit his first major league homer in '69 (the middle homer in a back to back to back homer string, Murcer, Munson, Michael) against the A's. He still is one of my favorites. A true Yankee and born leader. Missing you, captain!!
I saw him play his last game and I was in shock the next day when I heard he was killed in a plane crash. Now my father hated the Yankees but when they won that game the day they had to bury him and the way they won the game with Bobby Murcer getting the game winning hit I saw my father with tears in his eyes and thought it was fitting that the Yanks win this game
Today’s players should watch his Yankeeograhy as a requirement. Everyone should look at his numbers. So he didn’t play long enough, his numbers are better than catchers that are in the HOF now!! Veteran’s committee you need to make things right!
I remember when I was a little kid and the fourth place Yankees brought up Thurmond from the minors. Mel Stottlemyre (my all time favorite Yankee Pitcher) was trying win game no. 20. It was bottom of the ninth. Yankees were up 1 to 0. But the other team had the bases loaded with 2 outs and Mel was behind in the count. If he walks this batter a run will walk in. Thurmond resolved this problem by picking off the runner on first! The runner was shocked!!! The Yankees were shocked!!! Me and my family were shocked!!!! At that moment, I thought to myself, from now on we (The Yankees) are going to win, win, win now that this Munson kid is here!!!!! And that is exactly happened!!!
I'm a Met fan. Yeah I am. And I have to admit, after the Mets got rid of Server, Staub, etc., they were awful to watch. We had Stearns behind the plate, the Yanks had Munson. I never liked the Yankees, but u have to respect Munson, 3 straight 100 rbi years, 3 straight .300 avg years, and a 1976 MVP. Despite the Reds 1976 WS sweep, Reds MGR, sparky Anderson admitted, he was frustrated cause they couldn't get Munson out at the plate. Saying, " He is so good. " Sure Anderson made the comment about comparing anyone to Johnny Bench. But u know he respected Munson a great deal. Watch these videos. Munson was 1 tough sob. Gotta give him that.
The only reason he is not in the HOF is the length of his career. There is no doubt that he belonged there, but let's say he died during the '84 season instead of '79, he was a slam dunk HOF. It really is a tough call...it's just hitting me as I type this that 100% of Sandy Koufax's HOF credentials occurred in 6 seasons '61-'66. Both players have 2 rings.
He had 8 HofF years. His body was breaking down,I think he would have ended up in Cleveland and his career stat's would have declined. Unfortunately too many voters look at longevity. Fisk and Bench had longer careers but in his prime he was just ad good.
Yeah and if he did play with Cleveland when you had Nettles and Chambliss maybe he would have been known. But the Indians decided to trade both those players to the Yankees for a couple of hot dogs and beers.
I wonder if Thurman ever got a chance to hear what Sparky Anderson said about him while he was changing pitchers at 13:23 seconds of this clip. Considering that after this 4th game Anderson responded to a question asking him to compare Munson and Bench by saying he wouldn't embarrass anyone by comparing them to Bench, the anger that Thurman felt about that quote would've subsided in later years, cause what Sparky said at the mound was about as high an honor as an adversary can pay you.
must be sooo cool too run on the field. I hate the fact that you can't do that. The brave ones get the shit kicked out of them by security guards these days.
I don’t know if Munson is in the HOF but if he isn’t writers put him in there you put Harold Haines in there I don’t think of him as a great player maybe a very good player. Garvey made 9-10 all star games but many of them he was voted as a starter he should be in the HOF I think both don mattinglyc and Steve Garvey will definitely be in the HOF!!
It's called "LIQUID COURAGE". The brave idiots that run onto field are so drunk &/or high, they probably dont feel a thing. I was sitting near Yankee dugout once back in '70s and Stadium security was escorting an idiot they just coralled. THEY BEAT THE LIVING SHIT OUT OF HIM WITH NIGHT STICKS!!! Too bad there weren't cell phone cameras back then. I bet you wouldnt be so eager to run onto the field, if you saw that on youtube.
Munson was a better player than Fisk... Fisk had numbers bc he was a right handed hitter in beantown-add 50 points and 25 rbi's at least (per year) to your stats. Thurman played in old yankee stadium (death valley for right handers) and another horror show for hitters; SHEA Stadium, for 2 years, so only 4 years at "new/rebuilt YS" and that was only a hitters park for lefties. Defensively, ALL Munson. Fisk was great too, but The Yankees were lead to 3 world series by Munson, winning 2, while Fisk---PFFT.
Unbelievable that it is 37 years ago today that Thurman Munson was killed. I still remember it like it was only 10 years ago. All of these years later, Thurman is still a legend and will always be remembered.
The best game caller I ever saw
My Mom's all-time favorite MLB player ... Thurman Munson ... R.I.P. MOMMY , R.I.P. THURMAN
still cant get over it, our captain we miss and love you thurman. he belongs in the HOF
I think he could be top 3 catcher all time, sadness he died early.
I miss the captain T. Munson HOF
Lord don’t we all, and we always will.
Thurman was the man
He was the captain

Munson should be in the Hall of fame
my idol even to this day I played hard because he did loved Munson as a kid played catcher and wore 15 cause of him

My favorite player of all time! Oh Captain, my Captain!
33 Years ago today we lost a great ballplayer, American, and father. RIP Munson.
Thurman was a true Captain and a great ball player with grit. Shame he died so young.
Today’s players should watch his Yankeeograhy as a requirement. Everyone should look at his numbers. So he didn’t play long enough, his numbers are better than catchers that are in the HOF now!! Veteran’s committee you need to make things right!
#4 and #15 Only True Yankee Captains
The Captain of Clutch
You're the man, Frank
He was one of my favorite Yankees of all time...
THURMAN, was a go getter and played 110%
No way Fisk was better than Munson.

BingCherry11 it’s “Thurman”, not Thurmond. You’re a Yankees fan, and don’t know the first name of one of your team captains?
I'm a Met fan. Yeah I am. And I have to admit, after the Mets got rid of Server, Staub, etc., they were awful to watch. We had Stearns behind the plate, the Yanks had Munson. I'm a Yankke fan born on Jerry Koosman's birthday 😅
Nobody blocked the plate like him
Thurman Munson the Yankee Captain
The Manager on the field
The golden age of catchers...Bench,Fisk,Simmons,and of course Munson

True, Munson, Guidry and Mattingly all had great 5 of 10 year careers, but the Hall is littered today with compilers.
Koufax was 68-60 with 3.97 ERA (55-62) 8 Seasons
then 97-27 with 1.84 ERA (63-66) 4 Seasons
Thurman was overhyped. Had he played for Cleveland you’d of barely heard of him.
Yeah and if he did play with Cleveland when you had Nettles and Chambliss maybe he would have been known. But the Indians decided to trade both those players to the Yankees for a couple of hot dogs and beers.
Well, you're talking Cleveland. Psssh.
I wonder if Thurman ever got a chance to hear what Sparky Anderson said about him while he was changing pitchers at 13:23 seconds of this clip. Pete Rose and Sparky Anderson both commented on the mound about what a great hitter Thurman was. Thurman was my hero. May he RIP 🙏.

Great documentary but really annoying music constantly playing in the background.

Let's go YANKEES

Shame he's not in the hall of fame. Great all round player. And I'm not a Yankees fan, at all.
WOW!! Thanks Frank Russo!!
Fisk was better but i respect munson as a player i am however. A yankee hater but you got to respect many players of their great history
Unbelievable that it is 37 years ago today that Thurman Munson was killed. I still remember it like it was only 10 years ago. All of these years later, Thurman is still a legend and will always be remembered.
I remember where I was when I heard the news. He was my favorite player of all time.
Is George Carlin the narrator?
