The drawers are made a plywood screwed and glued together with a white MDF front panel. They sit on a frame fixed to a pair of 80kg 800mm pull out drawer runners for each drawer. The drawer runners are mounted to a 4"x2" frame fixed to the floor and walls of the cupboard with steel L brackets.
The project took me 2 full weekends to build, plus a few evenings to paint and varnish.
I used a primer/undercoat on the MDR front panel and a waterbased satin interior paint that I applied with a roller.

Just a note for anyone about to comment on whether the child can breath in the under stairs bedroom.. this was a joke, its not really her bedroom, I do not really store my children in drawers under the stairs!
Love how you cover this especially as some idiot will actually believe that’s her bedroom 😂
For a short period of time RUclips was pushing this video to a "concerned parent" demographic... it was a full time job reassuring commenters that it wasn't real 😂
obviously not - keeping the children in the fridge will ensure they don’t get hot and stay fresher for longer - LOL
She is frickin’ adorable!!!
@@NeilLovegrovemaker If it is good enough for Harry Potter to sleep under the stairs, it is good enough for all kids!
I was like "why is he whispering, is someone asleep?" I was not disappointed, very funny! Great build!
Yea
Lol true
Don't do that
Finally a build thread an average Joe can follow without requiring biscuit pointers and 10,000 clamps great job Neil!
Super video, well done, great craftmanship and a super little child actor.
This is next level "DIY". Man has professional skills.
Great tip for the runners, so many people would've struggled trying to attach the runners to the drawers.
I've shared this video 4 times on various places. Great hiding place for your daughter, I bet it freaks out the grandparents.
Thanks for sharing! The Grandparents know what she's like. She actually wouldn't get out after filming. We ended up playing bedrooms for half an hour!
When you pulled you're daughter out of that drawer! LOL!!
😂
Yea is cool and funny
She's funny 🤣
I seen a few videos about the storage under the stairs and I must say this is the best one I have seen! Well done!
You’re very good, mate. You have to make more than 4 videos; you’ve got talent. 👍🏻🏴
Thank you very much! I've always got a project on the go.. it's just a time consuming process to make the 'thing' and then a video about it.
Stay tuned though (subscribe and bell and all that) I've got pages of ideas for videos, they're just a little slow to make at the moment, I'm getting quicker at it though 👍
Love it, love it, love it. Such great camerawork too, seeing how that latch works from inside the cupboard makes this video even better!
Thank you! I'm still learning the ropes with the camera work so great feedback like that is really encouraging! I'm glad you enjoyed it
Where you get the latch from?
Links in the description !
Neil- daughter in the drawer made me laugh i spit my coffee THANKS!
Always a good sign that it was worth it 😁
Awesome bedroom 🛏 !! 😂
True, that was cute and funny 😁
Just wanted to say thank you. I have been trying to figure out how people make the runners soft close. Now I know thank you. Love the work.
Clever use of space...
Nice Work... Greg
man that's pro. what a clean job. I could watch it all day long
This is fantastic! I've been looking for a tutorial just like this for my basement stairs. Thanks a ton!
He is extremely talented. I really admire his skills through the entire video.
Lovely to see proper craftmanship alive and well. Love the top drawer :-) You make it look so easy
Thank you for the feedback. Glad you enjoyed
I copied this video step by step and have achieved a brilliant result, thank you for a simple and thorough video!
I only came here to see if a child was actually sleeping in a drawer under the stairs.
Same
Me too

Hopefully you all got the joke... a lot of people are thinking I actually store my children under the stairs 😂
Good job! Well done Neil!
Woodworker from Algeria.
Why would anyone give this a thumb's down. Great work!!
What an incredible use of space that would otherwise be wasted! Phenomenal!
Omg you do not know how long I’ve been searching for a simple way of doing this exact same thing! Thank you for this upload!
Great result, your DIY is far better than the one I paid for. Watching your video made me see the mistakes he made and want to rip it apart and do it again.
That's very nice of you to say so. I'm glad it's better than the professionals! Maybe I should go into business installing these!
🤣🤣🤣 I was not expecting that hidden bedroom hahaha. Fantastic work and you made it look so easy too! Especially installing the drawer runners... I've not installed any yet but I know they can be difficult!
One off the better videos on pull out draws great work
Brilliant. Especially the bedroom! Now I have a. Space for guests with babies n no cot!
I've got a void behind a stud wall in a old airing cupboard I've removed all the plaster and want to do something same as this and was racking my brains how to do it and your video has made me feel quite confident about doing this
Made this some years ago but you've done a real nice job of this with some terrific tips. Respect to you and a lovely touch with your daughter! Thank you.
Thanks Tony. I'm glad you enjoyed
Pure Genius! I love the hidden design aspect.
I would like to say thank you to you. Followed your video and have now built my own under the stair storage drawers. Saved a packet.
Fantastic! Glad it helped!
I'm I the only claustrophobe in the comment section thinking that child would suffocate?
No me too I was wondering how does she breath in there ?! 😰
Yeah
To put all your minds at ease, this drawer is not her real bedroom.. this was just a bit of fun we had whilst filming!
@@NeilLovegrovemaker ❤️❤️ Was worried a child accidentally locked in could suffocate. Children being children.
***😅 Also, I'm just claustrophobic.
Neil Lovegrove Lol who didn’t realize this lol too funny!!!! Couldn’t stop laughing and thinking of Harry Potter but the fun not abuse version !!! So cool!!!
Utilizing odd space like this is so inspiring to me! It looks so nice and professional.
Really impressed with your build and video!!! I subscribed half way through and rewatched probably 5x, I have underneath stairs (not side of stairs unfortunately) however it’s so unorganized and I’ve struggled with ideas of simple shelves to actual pull out drawers but by borrowing your idea and learning from your demonstration it’ll def come in handy when I address the nightmare under my stairs lol and oml your little girl, precious!!! Love her part in the video, what a doll
Thank you for the lovely feedback. I'm really pleased you enjoyed it 😁
I'll probably do this for my parents at some point (we have a cat, litter tray is under the stairs so......)
It's definitely interesting to see a bit more in depth of how to DIY this like what parts you used rather than other videos I've seen that skip stuff.
Ours wouldn't be a shoe rack though, it'd more than likely be for storing things - under stairs space is seldom used cause nobody wants to bend down to the bottom!
Nice job! And funny bedroon hahahahhas. Greetings from Brazil
very informative 30 yrs in the game and still learning well done thank you
Thanks Brian!
You were getting a like for the work but the "bedroom" made me wish I could double like.
You could always share it, subscribe, hit the bell and all that good stuff 😉
OMG, your daughter is ADORABLE!
6:45 Well we all know she’s NOT Claustrophobic 😬😂
And she is not afraid of dark 😭
wow
This is so great! We are looking at doing the same to under our stairs. You made the process attainable!
Don't be surprised when your daughter gets her letter from Hogwarts.
XD THE GIRL WHO LIVED BRUH
😂so I’m not the only one who adamantly thought of Harry Potter
Who has summoned me here
Lol 🤣🤣
Were reading that book in my class I’m in sixth grade
i actually made these cupboards with the help of this video. Am going to fit the latches today. Great job and thanks for your ideas.
Do you really need the latches? Do the draws not stay closed even with push to open runners?
These ones aren't push to open runners unfortunately so the latch is needed to push the drawer open enough to get hold of it
Five stars really nice job.
Brilliant.
the most that I like is the upper drawer👍👍👍
Looks good! Although I’d be careful about drilling into that floor, they look like asbestos floor tiles, I had to get the very same looking ones removed (usually 9x9 or 12x12 inch)
That is some craftsmanship. Well done
Crackin up about the kid in that drawer. Nice! 🤣🤣🤣
Wow. Simple, easy to build, obviously usefull.
Thanks for sharing. Now i got work to do.
Let’s addmitt we all came here for the child in the draw: edit: thanks for all the likes
Wait I have 11likes ty
Have one from me 😁
Neil Lovegrove no thank you I’m 11😂😂
A like!!!!!
Neil Lovegrove oh I thought u was gonna give that little girl to me 😂😂
Best video and very professional finish , last top drawer sleeping bed was funniest thing ever Bless her
Really impressed so much more useful
Great job. Well done. Brilliant use of space. 👍🏻👍🏻.
Your daughter is so cute! And she reminds me of me when I was little! I would have wanted to spend the night in there and make it my new hiding spot🤣😂
We decided against letting her spend the night.. but she enjoyed the role play all the same 😂
Amazing video Neil, I have built one my self from your instructions. I have learnt so much just from that video alone so thank you so much. !!
Thank you Peter! I'm so glad you were able to follow it! It makes it worth the while making a video of the process when I get great feedback like this
Brilliant work and video Neil! I've been planning a similar project for a year now and seemingly carpenters are afraid/unwilling to do this so I have no excuses for not doing it on my own. Your video definitely made me much more confident that my skills are sufficient, and I'll get to doing it over the coming month or two.
Just a few questions (I hope that's OK):
1. How sturdy did the rails feel? I'm doing my pull outs in a loft and they're therefor taller. While they'll stay under 80kg including the content, I was wondering if I should invest in a higher load rating (160kg or 250kg) just to be on the safe side.
2. Can you please post a link to the mechanical latch you used? Can't find it anywhere.
Many thanks Neil! I've subscribed and am looking forward to more videos.
Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you've found it useful!
The runners are pretty sturdy but It's difficult today if you'd need a heavier duty. You could always add an additional runner at the top of the drawer to support if it was not very stable.
The latch came from ebay. I don't post a link as they die as soon as the auction ends, but have a search for 'loft hatch latch' and you'll find plenty.
Good luck with it. Let me know how it goes 👍
Ps next project should be posted soon!
@@NeilLovegrovemaker Thanks a million. I'll just go with the safer option duty wise. Found the latch easily with your guidance :)
Wow you make it seem so easy..I wish I was capable of stuff like this.
the kid pulled out of the draw hahahahaha brilliant
Makes it look so easy... when you are a professional. Nice 👌 Job!! Love it
That top drawer is essencially the script of a "Harry Potter Origins" movie 😅
You are absolutely amazing at building
1:06 when you see a spider run across the kitchen floor
😂😂 I had to watch it back and remind myself.. I thought "huh, there was no spider"... then I got it
loved the design and the kids were cute. Brainstorming my own under the stairs storage solutions. this moved to the top of my list of ideas.
It ALMOST seems like I could do this myself. Almost.
I thought the same! This was my first time using a table saw or doing anything like this. I just watched lots of tutorials. You can do it 👍
Great job, the little one in the top drawer was funny bits
The 24 people who thumbs down, thought the child in the drawer was unsafe.
Awesome work!!! Bless your daughter😍
POV: this popped up on ur recommended
Same lol
Beautiful craftsmanship. Very creative and innovative. I like that a lot
I want MY husband to handy like him! Instead, he lays on the couch all day eatin chips pickin bugers and burpin and a fartin. Any one else have a dead-beat husband?!
Absolutely brilliant Neil! 👍🏾
I am only here cause I was curious if the child is being comfortable in this small place.
I been thinking of this idea for ages. But scared i might mess it up.
Nice work mate loving the final.
Shes gonna suffocate u think dont do such a thing thats so weird when she sleeps in there she gonna fie so dont do that.
JenniferEseWowoFoundation TV it was just a joke for the video...chill....
I have little experience, but I could follow your video and now have a pair of sliding drawers of my own!! Thank you!
Woo hoo! That's fantastic! If you follow the link in the description to my instructables page you can upload a photo under the "I made it" option. Would be great to see the finished product
@@NeilLovegrovemaker just uploaded!
Great! I'll check it out
WOW you are a great build!
very easy to follow video. thanks for the effort on putting it togather.
Love this.....❤❤❤ daughter is soooo adorable 🤗🤗🤗
you sure have a lot of shoes! lol - I wasn't even looking to make this - i just came across it but the skill and creativity is wonderous! And I loved the bit with the little girl in the drawer!
Thank you for stopping by and leaving a lovely review. Glad you enjoyed it
Your diy is a lot better than mine!!!
Watched a ton of these videos lately but this is by far the best, as someone else mentioned, great camera work as well.
Juat need to convince the mrs to let me buy a table saw now :)
Thank you! Great feedback like this makes it worthwhile putting the effort in to document the process.
I bought my table saw for this project and have used it a lot since. Its a great tool to have. I used the excuse that the table saw plus materials is still cheaper than getting someone in to do it!
@@NeilLovegrovemaker well you've inspired me anyhow, keep up the great work 👍
this video is perfect for what I need!! Well filmed and well explained....love the bedroom😂
Very good build and use of materials. Thanks for sharing.
Brilliant twist at the end.
Informative, well made video and the end was very funny!
Neil, you are great, well-done
That's perfect. Well done Neil.
PHENOMENAL-- me thinks I need to get a small table saw. The stunt with your child is adorable.
Nice use of space and easy to follow instructions.
So talented !!!! I want one under my stairs!
I never knew you could make these yourself!
Wow! Awesome looks great buddy
This was so cool. Nice build and loved the ending 🤣
Nice details for installing drawer slides.
That’s cool! It would also be cool to stick twin sized mattresses under the stairs that pull out and could have legs on one side that could unfold and fold back than slide back in stairs
Very cool project. Super cute kid.
More child storage ideas needed. A series? Seriously, tidy job, very well explained. Thank you.
Love it, its beautiful and hides away all the shoes. I always want at storage shoe place, this so nice... darn why couldn't my hubby be a handy man. He can't even put my wall art up 😫
We moved into a new build and was wondering how to get more storage room. Your video was a fantastic build and was easy to watch, like other comments you should be making more videos.
Cheers
Thanks Bill. Glad you enjoyed it. I'm working as hard a I can to make more videos but finding the time is always my biggest struggle. I guess i should be encouraging you to subscribe and hit the bell so you don't miss when I post my next video!
Great Vid Neil. Can i just say one thing. When you cut your sheets on your table saw, please lower the blade down so it sits about 3mm above the surface of the wood. If i showed you a picture of my left hand you would understand why im saying this.
Thanks for the tip Jamie! This was actually the first time I had ever used a table saw so have learnt a lot since this project (luckily haven't had to learn the hard way!) So am pleased to say I do keep the blade low now 😁👍.
