This video details how I turned a small cupboard under the stairs into a pull out storage drawer system.
For full build details, see this projects Instructables article.

The drawers are made a plywood screwed and glued together with a white MDF front panel. They sit on a frame fixed to a pair of 80kg 800mm pull out drawer runners for each drawer. The drawer runners are mounted to a 4"x2" frame fixed to the floor and walls of the cupboard with steel L brackets.
The project took me 2 full weekends to build, plus a few evenings to paint and varnish.
I used a primer/undercoat on the MDR front panel and a waterbased satin interior paint that I applied with a roller.

Just a note for anyone about to comment on whether the child can breath in the under stairs bedroom.. this was a joke, its not really her bedroom, I do not really store my children in drawers under the stairs!

I subscribed half way through and rewatched probably 5x, I have underneath stairs (not side of stairs unfortunately) however it’s so unorganized and I’ve struggled with ideas of simple shelves to actual pull out drawers but by borrowing your idea and learning from your demonstration it’ll def come in handy when I address the nightmare under my stairs lol and oml your little girl, precious!!! Love her part in the video, what a doll

I'll probably do this for my parents at some point (we have a cat, litter tray is under the stairs so......)
It's definitely interesting to see a bit more in depth of how to DIY this like what parts you used rather than other videos I've seen that skip stuff.
Ours wouldn't be a shoe rack though, it'd more than likely be for storing things - under stairs space is seldom used cause nobody wants to bend down to the bottom!

Brilliant work and video Neil! I've been planning a similar project for a year now and seemingly carpenters are afraid/unwilling to do this so I have no excuses for not doing it on my own. Your video definitely made me much more confident that my skills are sufficient, and I'll get to doing it over the coming month or two.
Just a few questions (I hope that's OK):
    1. How sturdy did the rails feel? I'm doing my pull outs in a loft and they're therefor taller. While they'll stay under 80kg including the content, I was wondering if I should invest in a higher load rating (160kg or 250kg) just to be on the safe side.
    2. Can you please post a link to the mechanical latch you used? Can't find it anywhere.
Many thanks Neil! I've subscribed and am looking forward to more videos.

    • @NeilLovegrovemaker
      @NeilLovegrovemaker  5 лет назад +2

Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you've found it useful!
The runners are pretty sturdy but It's difficult today if you'd need a heavier duty. You could always add an additional runner at the top of the drawer to support if it was not very stable.
The latch came from ebay. I don't post a link as they die as soon as the auction ends, but have a search for 'loft hatch latch' and you'll find plenty.
Good luck with it. Let me know how it goes 👍
Ps next project should be posted soon!

PHENOMENAL-- me thinks I need to get a small table saw. The stunt with your child is adorable.

That’s cool! It would also be cool to stick twin sized mattresses under the stairs that pull out and could have legs on one side that could unfold and fold back than slide back in stairs

More child storage ideas needed. A series? Seriously, tidy job, very well explained. Thank you.

We moved into a new build and was wondering how to get more storage room. Your video was a fantastic build and was easy to watch, like other comments you should be making more videos.
    Cheers

Thanks Bill. Glad you enjoyed it. I'm working as hard a I can to make more videos but finding the time is always my biggest struggle. I guess i should be encouraging you to subscribe and hit the bell so you don't miss when I post my next video!

Great Vid Neil. Can i just say one thing. When you cut your sheets on your table saw, please lower the blade down so it sits about 3mm above the surface of the wood. If i showed you a picture of my left hand you would understand why im saying this.

Thanks for the tip Jamie! This was actually the first time I had ever used a table saw so have learnt a lot since this project (luckily haven't had to learn the hard way!) So am pleased to say I do keep the blade low now 😁👍.
