  • How to get your Ryobi 14.4V drill to run on an 18V lithium battery instead of its NiCad battery

    You learn something every day. I had no idea that Ryobi produced 14.4V drills in the lime green color instead of blue.
    When my (much older?) 14.4V Dewalt battery crapped out, after having already rebuilt it with NiCd years ago, I opted to convert to 4S 18650 Li-Ion, put a cheap BMS board in it and convert the charger with a PCB out of a 16.8V wall wart charger (not just an AC/DC adapter, must be designed to limit current while charging and peak at 16.8V, the fully charged voltage of a 4S 18650 pack).

    Thanks for confirming that this works. I have an old 14.4 drill, it's a ‘Kinzo’ which is some obscure budget brand. The thing still works but its NiCd pack was totally dead after many years. I noticed that the form factor is pretty similar to the Ryobi packs. So after seeing this video and doing some tests with a bench supply to see if the thing wouldn't go up in smoke with a fully charged 18V pack (which will deliver almost 21V), I ordered a Ryobi battery and charger. If it wouldn't work out, I could simply buy a Ryobi drill anyway. But it does work, the pack fits and the drill works! Another bit of electro-waste avoided…

    Thanks for this. I have a 14.4 Ryobi drill and saw set with dead batteries. A friend of mine has 6 18 volt Ryobi batteries and charger but his drill died. He gave me all of them and while I thought they would work with a little modification. This confirms it! Like you said if it burns up after a while nothing its not a big deal.

      Howard Mann it's a cheap diy hack but if it works... great news. I'm pleased for you. I've also successfully revived the ryobi lithium 18v batteries too!

    Thanks for this video. I was able to Mod a Ryobi 14.4v flashlight with an 18v battery. Worked perfectly fine after some work on the body to accept the battery.

    Thanks for showing us this, I did this with a old 12volt dark green ryobi drill,not as good a fit with the 18volt but still worked fine,held it in place with a thick rubber band cheers.

    Worked for me...I used a small soldering iron to gouge out the corners and a sharp chisel to tidy it up and shave the front piece for the battery to sit flat. Many thanks.

    Thanks. Have very similar problem and will try the new battery instead of throwing out my drills. As you say, if it burns out after a while it is no great loss versus buying a new drill now.

    I want to do the same with my 14.4V Maktek and run it with the new 18V Makita - Like you I am not bothered about the effect on the tool itself as it is almost obsolete, however, what worries me is damaging my brand new 18V Makita battery as it cost more than the Maktek drill! Thanks for the video, interesting.
    I don't really see there being an issue with the motor itself, it should handle the extra voltage OK, the only problem as far as the tool goes might be overloading the speed controller.

    • @kurttallon
      @kurttallon  2 года назад

      I'm sure the Makita battery will be able to handle it ok 👍

    You can buy independent 14.4v LiPo replacement bats and chargers for that series on E-bay. But I cant vouch for the quality of them.
    The 14.4v Ryobi range were dropped when the One Plus 18v range were introduced.

    i have done that with my two dewalt 14.4v drills used a 18v ni-cd and got adapter to use to newer lithium and it works I think it might case because both of mine are xrp type the motor is stronger can handle the higher voltage

    Funny thing is i see motors sold that are rated 12 to 20v. So that means they should never burn. They should take everything you throw at it. Any thoughts on that direction?

    • @kurttallon
      @kurttallon  Год назад

      I'm no expert but your theory sounds like it could quite possibly be the case 👍

    • @mikkveere1409

      @@kurttallon in that case we have been living in a big lie of different companies. Instead of making one universal battery, everyone make theirown and say it is an only one that can be used. Now they rate different voltages to same motor to further force you to buy their shit.

      @Mikk Veere I guess it's a - "you pays your money, you makes your choice" kind of thing 🤷

    • @mikkveere1409
      @mikkveere1409 Год назад

      And more over they are going to add some circut board in it that burns if you use a different battery. If you remove that, it works perfectly. So basicly everyone must learn how to open up their tools and remove the shit they dont need for the tool to work as they want it to work. Otherwise you will be a slave to a big company that intends to keep you so. Fucking world... smh.

      @@kurttallon true. Yet. Atleast those companies should leave us some joice in the image of adapters. If i wave 10 makita batteries then i should not be forced to start over for one tool from different company. Make them 18v and adaptable. But they try to take that also away from us by changing battery connections for newer tools etc.

    What is the point of this video without a proper usage test. Did it overload or overheat in proper working conditions?

      @@user-du6op6qx5s but when you have a flexvolt battery on a 20v tool it only puts out 20v. The 60v tools have an extra connection so the battery outputs the 60v.
