Making a COZY SHEEP GAME But I Only Have 8 Hours!

- Can I make a game in just 8 hours? Come along and let's find out together!
I've been seeing this type of content for a while now and everytime I do I think to myself, I wonder if I could do that? So today I tried the 24 Hour Game Challenge but to keep it fair to those who actually do it one day cut my time in half plus some. I hope you guys enjoy this video! Editing it honestly probably took just as long as making the game if not longer which is embarrassing but cmon now, im a self proclamed programmer no one told me I need to learn editing back when I started Programming.

Hey everyone! A demo version of the game is now free to play (donations always appreciated ) and posted on my itch.io page here: hawkesbyte.itch.io/flockingfrenzy
There's also a second video covering some really cool new additions so feel free to check that out by looking at the channel! Thanks and enjoy the game :)
This is why mobile games are so profitable, can literally be made in a day! Great video man
thanks dude! and yeah honestly its crazy what you can get done is such little time
I know you called that one function "suctionSheep" because "suckSheep" sounded bad 🤣
read my mind 😭😭
The way the sheep get pushed around made me think of a leafblower, but I guess blowing sheep doesn't sound any better than sucking them xD
I think a cool mechanic for this game would be a lasso, where instead of pushing the sheep away from the cursor, you draw a loop around a couple of them and then drag them around in a bunch. That could either be a secondary tool, or, what I think would be more fun, is that there are cows too, and each animal can only be moved with their respective tool.
Alternatively, you could add goats that charge at your mouse and coexist with the sheep, making for some interesting juggling of mechanics.
Those were just some ideas that popped into my head while I was watching. Anyway, great work on the video; looking forward to the next one!
some really awesome ideas! im definitely coming back to this project to implement some of these, ive had a lot of suggestions recently :)
Something like this would have taken me like 2 weeks full time.
honestly the code for this is really simple which meant i could make it “look” a lot cooler than it really is haha, but all comes with practice! :)
Half year for me
😂 🗣️ " who ran a highway through my sheep pen!?!"
This is exactly the game SHEEP from 2000. Had it, loved it.
i hadnt heard of it until i made this video and now everybody is saying how much they love it haha
This give me faint vibes of what an early prototype of Sheep might have looked like (the one where you can play one of two people, or one of two dogs [so one of four characters], who have been brainwashed by the alien sheep to bring their lost relatives home).
Own that game on Playstation and also had it on PC back in the day but I gifted that copy to my sibling.
my god, its always so impressive how much can be done in 8 hours......i am working on a game for months now and it still feels like i only worked a few hours straigt on it :D lol
honestly i was surprised by how quickly i threw it all together! i think setting the time limit really just forces you to think quickly haha
Really nice result! The idea and implementation are simple but very well put together, so the game looks complete and polished.
thanks so much! i think for a simple game like this the polish and art really comes into play to make or break the project
This is so good man! I'm a student in high school currently and this is the type of stuff I aspire to- you're really an inspiration :) I would love to see more videos on this sheep game its such a cute concept with lots of possibilities!
super glad to hear you enjoyed it :) im considering picking the project back up thanks to the success of this video! theres loads of fun ideas i would love to add haha
I absolutely loved this!
Making a plan, breaking it down into actionable items considering time limits, helped both in setting realistic expectations as well as simulating an actual real-life time sensitive project.
I am an AI engineer, and seeing this i was able to relate to different things I'd do with work and it was just so fascinating xP, each "challenge" in terms of time crunch or inexperience in sound design is just another opportunity to be creative. I absolutely loved this end to end, and seeing how your expressed yourself here.
P.S: I've no experience with game dev, and I promised my bestfriend I'd help her propose to her boyfriend via a game in 3 months, there's a lot of lessons i can take from your video, and for that thank you my friend.
Wishing you the best, and lots of joy in this journey

this is such an awesome comment! im glad you enjoyed the video and the creative process, its always tough having a time limit but im glad you noticed all the little creative workarounds :) and best of luck with making the game, sounds like a crazy idea but you got this!!
I found it quite entertaining. Still I think this spin 1h * 8 takes a lot off the stress out, that makes the original challenge well... challenging. This was different and it is/was important you explained it.
14:04 you could make the sheep float down the river when they fall in
check the updated video! i added exactly this :)
lol I didnt see there was another one
WHAT IS THAT FONT? I NEED THAT FONT
Hi! I want to say thank you for all your lessons! It's just amazing. Special thanks for the lessons with sheep. I haven't seen anything like this on RUclips!
Actually, it seems to me that I have become a fan of yours. I'm waiting for each new video as an episode of my favorite TV series;)
Thank you so much for your efforts!
I was also curious. Do you have any plans to release a series of training videos about creating character movement? I know that there are already many lessons on this topic on RUclips, but I also noticed that each author has his own style, and I really liked yours)
No, it's not a call to action, but I admit I'd love to see it.
In any case, you did a great job. And thanks again!
(Maybe my message will look strange, but I don't know English and I'm trying my best)
thanks for the kind message! i really appreciate it :) i have a few series on the go at the moment and so im not sure if ill be working on a player controller for now, but i’ll definitely add it to the backlog of ideas! if i get around to it ill be sure to come back and let you know :) thanks for the support on the channel though! it means a lot :)
Look up Sheep, a video game from 2000. I've sunk countless hours playing that game in my childhood.
it looks super cute! hope this little video brought back some positive memories :)
Thanked the lead dev on facebook the other day haha great memories indeed.
Btw, what is the song called that plays at the end of the video (game showcase)
all the music and sounds are in the description! can’t remember exactly which one i used for the game showcase though 😅
you should have added wolves closing in on the fence so that there’s a reason for a timer
I love a lot this video, beatiful game!
thank you so much! :)
im curious how did you do the sheep to face where it's going
I honestly want a part 2 on this
well youre going to be pleasantly surprised in a weeks time haha
Ain't nobody got time for activating Windows.
way too expensive on a student budget!! I refuse
The game looks great! How did you learn to do all that? What learning methods do you recommend?
honestly trial and error over 2 years haha, the best way to learn is to just get stuck in!
Seems fun! Can you make a full tutorial on this or other type game like this one so we can learn from it with explanation, really liike it!
I’m getting into coding, I started on scratch and now I’m trying to progress over to gdevelop
best of luck!! let me know how you get on :)
I seriously miss designing and making my own games 😢
Amazing game for being made in just 8 hours!
If you want a suggestion to improve the gameplay with 0 effort, add a "audiosource.pitch = Random.Range(.95f, 1.05f)" before playing a sound (like the car horn), it will improve a lot the feeling of the sounds.
Do you think you're gonna continue this game ? Because I think there's a lot of potential in that game and it could be an incredible cozy game
im definitely considering it! the reception on this video has been amazing so its always a possibility, I do have loads of ideas for it but no promises at least not for now haha :)
@@HawkesByte This is the first and only video I've seen of you (for now) but I'm already subscribing because it was so good !
@@enexua_07 awesome! glad to have you on board :) im currently in the process of uploading another video but thats going to be a Tutorial so it might not be of much interest to you unless youre looking / are developing in Unity! I do have another video similair to this planned for the coming week though! Going to be a cute little 2D cat game, at least thats the plan haha
Hi, I’m learning to code because it’s my dream, and I am just wondering what software you recommend for beginners?
The video was really good and entertaining but it felt a bit repetitive. Subscribed
ill keep it in kind for the next one :) thanks!
Yeah I’m claiming an oh tag
Love the video and game 😊
nice job dude
Nice game !
thanks!
Didn't know nogla made games but keep it up
Oh this reminds me of FLOCK! I absolutely LOVED that game as a kid, my sibling and I would play it and then mess around in the sandbox mode for hours at a time. One of the few things from my childhood I can actually remember
awesome
thanks!!
Man that's nice! ❤
thanks!!
I would love to have these on my phone it's such a cute gameeee
Wow 🤩 (Can you make a tutorial to fight enemy’s ?
Love it. Keep going👏
Thank you! Will do :)
Are you going to publish this game?
maybe! who knows haha, if i put a bit work into it then ill probably update you all with a video :)
where did your tutorials go?
Now wait till you see “only ogs can like this comment” comments
haha thats the dream for sure
Ummm actually you are doing a BEGGER comment RN

Noice! Love those Sheep!
thanks!!
how can i download your games?
you can download the game from my itch.io! :) its called HawkesByte
@@HawkesByte let's try it
there's no way this only took 8 hours
youre right! it was actually just over by about 10-15 minutes ;)
where is the download link
im actually remaking the game! so no download link just yet :)
Wow amazing!
Glad you think so! Thank you!
Does anyone know what game engine this is please?
its unity! :)
@@HawkesBytenice! Just getting into all this myself and to see the process from start to finish was massively helpful! You did a great job - thanks for sharing!
What coding language is this?
c-sharp! The project was made with unity though :)
Okay thanks😎
Lool nice game!
thank you dude! :)

It's a shame this is made in Unity.
its still a great game engine!
@@HawkesByte It's an amazing engine. It's just expensive now :/
@@JackDaloots they actually went back on that plan due to complaints for the community, so it’s completely free for me to use and publish my projects :)
@@HawkesByte glad you're saving money then!

This was awesome! So impressed by how fast you did this, it would have taken me weeks. I've definitely got a lot more to learn. Keep up the good work!
thanks dude!! wishing you all the best with your learning, you got this!
waiting for the part 2. Great job on this. Ive been struggling with continuing my projects. Always strat one but bever finish so this has really inspired me to go back and do an 8 hour challenge with them haha see where that gets me. Awsome video. Cant wait to see more.
part 2 is out tommorow! :) And best of luck, i know that finishing projects can be an awful pain sometimes but when you find an idea you love youll have no problem pushing through and making something amazing im sure :)
Bro you motivated me to start coding and you helped me a lot
thats awesome to head! wishing you all the best with your programming!
Bro make that a full fledged game add hundreds of levels becouse that is a master piece 👍😍😯
Hey when you started game development how did you go from knowing the basics to scripting things?
I have been trying to learn scripting in lua.I know the basics but I JUST DONT KNOW what the next line should be when I am making something
how do i get beyond that?
hard to say really, its something you learn over time! what i always suggest it to start by working on super small projects, make super little games or systems that can be made in an hour or so! thats how i learnt, its a time consuming process but eventually youll get there im sure, best of luck :)
Reminds me of that game called Sheep that was release back in 2000. You should totally make this into a full game and borrow some of their ideas even.
ive had a lot of people mention it! it looks super cute, dont know if ill be working on this project more yet but i might do :)

This is impressive how you created this whole thing in just 8 hours. This looks too good and polished for something made in 8 hours. Amazing work. Liked and you got a new Subscriber as well.
Also the thing I'm thinking about most is how you guys come up with these simple but exciting game ideas?
thank you! the game idea was just based on the success of my animal AI tutorials, everyone loved the sheep so i figured why not make it into a game :)
I love your video and game idea. So simple and fun. But I also love your IDE font. What's font name? :D
thanks so much glad you like it!! :) the font is the minecraft font haha
What language is it coded in I only know python right now but I want to learn a language that would allow me to make something like this. Amazing vid man keep it up ❤
this was programmed in C# using the unity game engine! :) i actually started with python too (well scratch first but that doesnt count as a language haha), best of luck!!
Very nice game, pls upload to itchio.
thank you! and ill have a look into it :)
I really love this type of video and this was one of the best I have seen so far. Great work 💯
super glad to hear it thanks!! :) i made a simialir video that got uploaded yesterday if you wanna check it out!
Pixel font in Visual studio? Are you the one true programmer? please teach me the secrets!
even better.. its the minecraft font!
@@HawkesByte truly you have ascended, i must figure out the way! lol
Also amazing video keep up the good work!
@@UndeadAlex thank you that means a lot :) I got another little cozy game idea that Im gonna try and complete in 2-3 hours for the next video! Not sure how thats gonna go though hahaha
14:07 was a complete massacre
why your visual studio is like minecraft?
because the minecraft font is the best font!!
could be interesting to add mobile support and turn it into a mobile game, add 100 levels and presto :D good job on this :)
ill definitely consider it, never made a mobile project before so that could be an interesting video :)
you should make an update for a level editor
we have plans for this in the next release of the game :)
Can u continue developing this game😊
aready am! :) working on a release, you can join the discord if youre interested in playtesting!
amazing video this guy defenitly deserves more subs
thank you so much! glad you enjoyed :)
Really cute. Also I appreciate your calm serious tone ☺️
haha thank you so much! glad you enjoyed it
Best game ever. Post more like these
will do! thanks for the support :)
How did you create the suction effect?
its just a particle system with a trail renderer! super simple really nothing special, id be happy to go into more detail if you wanted to recreate it
I really like your videos. I think you should make a full tutorial about game development for the beginners like basic tutorials.
very beautiful , very powerful
Thanks!!!
Looks great, keep up the good work! 😄
thank you!! that means a lot :)
High quality video mate, subscribed
thank you :) glad to have you here!
Hi I love your game, may I please have the game files?
That is not exactly 40320 hours
Make it procedurally generate levels
The graphics are amazing! The gameplay is pretty mid - but is tas an 8 hour challenge after all! great work
yeah super proud of the visuals but the gameplay definitely needs a rework haha, might come back to the project at some point though! who knows:)

Fantastic video! Would you mind sharing the source code with us? Would love to learn from that!
which softwares did you use
Make full version please when you have time. Good luck with ur life :)
im definitely considering it!!
Would love to see this completed & more levels added
check back tomorrow haha :) got a second episode and a demo!
Amazing you need to add more levels do a second challenge where you have 24 hours split up in a week to update the game and add a bunch of more levels
We made an update with some new levels! Check the newer video out! :)
Great work. very inspiring videos, also i can learn a lot by the pieces of code you show.
thanks! the code is far from perfect though haha, quite rushed and a bit spaghetti but im sure without a time limit you could do some great stuff with it :)
Love it
thank you! :)
I dont know why but i expected a meatgrinder at the other side of the barn 😂
i think that would ruin the cute game i was going for but maybe in an alternate universe 😭
@@HawkesByte i agree, but the pipe sucking in the sheeps, just gave me the feeling 😂
I thought this was pretty epic. The way you worked on the models so quickly was awesome.
hay i have a question do you also feel like that your game is not good enough or not fun to play
cuz i am also game dev but sometimes i feel like that and that feeling is too Bad
its a common feeling dont worry! this game in particular was made just for a little laugh and a challenge so i didnt focus too much on making it fun per say and focused on making it visually cool, interesting for the video and then programming wise just i went bare minimum to get it working, I think in proper development that making a fun prototype and simple game loop is so much more important than graphics and should definitely be the focus, i find its best to create a trello board to help direct you to the important parts, that way if you find a certain mechanic that isnt as fun or cool as you thought it would be you can just try again without having wasted time on any modelling or art for it, its easier to realise something isn’t working before youve spent hours working on the visuals for it, just feels less painful to throw it out i guess haha
@@HawkesByte Thanks Man for the reply and thank you very much for the advice.
Very cool! The graphics are nice 👌
appreciate it!! :)
