The Gabba is a historical relic at this point. In 8 years time we host the Olympics and by that point the Gabba will be an actual embarrassment, and will need replacement anyway. If that wasn't bad enough Steven Miles (Premier of QLD) decided that QSAC would host the track and field, an absolute insane idea. QSAC was a dump 20 years ago and is only capable of holding high school sports carnivals, it would require a complete rebuild itself. Like the lads said public transport is abysmal in the area. Literally the only idea worth merit was Victoria Park. It already has the public transport sorted and could become a sports centre similar to Melbourne's. We have lost multiple events here in Brisbane because our facilities consist of one rectangle stadium that holds max 50,000. Steven Miles has put his hopes in being re-elected entirely in people who don't care about sports or concerts or going outside in general and for some reason those people believe that someone who's been in the upper echelon of the party in charge for 10 years will somehow fix our housing crisis because they are going to save 400 million, it's insane.

And even the options they chose will have cost overruns, the projected fees never marry up. Refusing to invest in infrastructure based on cost is a crazy way to govern, it's all about the optics rather than the budget.

As a Brisbane resident I can only hope the opposition government does decide we need the new stadium. It's embarrassing that the current government instituted the review and then didn't honour it. Not only is it disrespectful to the review panel but it's disrespectful to the Olympics. The Gabba is indeed in need of an upgrade and I was happy enough with the previous idea to renovate it even though it was going to disrupt the cricket and AFL for a few years. A new stadium at Victoria Park is a better idea and an ideal location. If Perth can get a new stadium with no Olympic Games then what is Brisbane doing? Do we want to be a world city or not?

It would be kinda funny if they spent all that money on Cross River Rail to the Gabba and then demolished the stadium for a new one in Vic Park.

@FinalWordCricket That's true but there's enough residential and commercial requirement for a station there regardless.

Roofed cyclone proof stadium in Darwin. Tropical vibes down under for cricket.
Hot AFL games in the winter.
A meeting place for sports and entertainment in the Australian city closest to Asia.

      Darwin is far too small.

Why exactly Gabba is not hosting the 1st Test of the Australian Summer ?? 2021 Gabba Test India won and hence won the Test Series 2-1. I was so excited that perhaps India will begin their Test Series later this year come Nov/Dec that they will return to Gabba and play the 1st Test. But Not to be. Why exactly Gabba has gone down the pecking order when it comes to hosting the First Test of the Australian Summer ??

As an England fan who has seen many ashes demolition jobs at the gabba and that one amazing draw in 2010 when we made Like 500 2nd inns runs and could’ve still been batting today. I would be sad if the gabba got knocked down. Like with the Optus in Perth, it’s a great ground but the WACA had personality and character.

How do you know - people were complaining about the drop in pitches at the WACA and how it wasn’t the same. England and India haven’t played at Optus due to Covid restrictions. Let’s see how those matches go before making a judgement.

@@donna25871 I’m not complaining about the quality of the game cos we (England) and India have yet to play there. I’m just saying in my opinion the WACA is the 2nd most beautiful ground in Australia (only behind the marvellous Adelaide Oval). So I’m taking about how the ground looks and the feel I get watching my team play there. I’ve no issues with them playing at the Optus cos as you said in another comment India and England tours will fill the Optus. I just like the feel of the WACA. I mean actually in spite of what I think about Australia the Cricket team, you do have some of the best cricket grounds in the world to play in and watch in as a spectator. So looking forward to the next ashes.

I miss the old WACA. My care factor for Perth test matches dropped markedly since the move to Optus.

Those foundation members are paying $10. Let’s see how it goes when they have to pay several hundred for AFL membership fees. The Gabba is ancient and needs to be rebuilt. Not having female change rooms or ambulance access shows how dire the situation is. The WACA is going to be a great boutique stadium once it’s finished. Cricket should go back to the original plan. India and England play at Optus (which will fill) and everyone else is at the WACA.

Yeah, the stadium over the river ain't working for most teams. Still more comfortable for the punters though.
