I always got the implication that the witch hated her mother but could never really go against her what with how powerful she’s implied to be. But this is just the witch absolutely not caring about her fate anymore. Screaming at her mother because for once she doesn’t care what she’d do to her because she’s just so angry and frustrated with it all.

Wait, you're saying Steep did better then Bernadette Peters, who brought brilliant comedic timing, and power and sass to the role she originated, is that right?
i'm not familiar with the original, but does it matter if Meryl was better or the original singer? No matter which one you prefer, I think we can all agree that she did an amazing job
@@TimothyRobert93 Yes, in big part due to the singing (When she is not going all out like in the sadder parts of the lament Bernadette Peters can be very flat. Hell in that song alone, hear how she says the phrase “couldn’t you listen?”) but also because the original play, much like a lot of Sondheim plays focuses too much in being hammy and comedic while the movie adaptations of his works allow themselves to be more dramatic to really pull out the darker undertones in the story and the songs. And also because Meryl has the advantage that the songs were arranged pretty damn well. That longer “All right mother, when?!” Makes the climax a lot better imo than the original where it keeps going like the rest of the song.
I love it when she starts throwing those beans as they run to pick them up. I think it manifests the endless greed of humans who run after money and power and the haunting just goes around in endless useless circles.
Laila Oueld Mimti Thinking it was that, or them trying to keep them from sprouting or anything else they can’t possibly know. She’s a witch, and those are her magic beans. They just got done throwing blame around for handling (and mishandling) some of the same beans, who knows what they’d do in the hands of someone who knows how to use them?
this song makes so much more sense in the original broadway production. Especially the line "your the world", because through the whole show the witch hates the world, and see's it as a horrible dangerous place, which is why she trapped her daughter in the tower. Also it makes since her going all out like this because her daughter was killed, but that din't happen in the movie, so it just escalates pretty quickly.
I love Bernadette's performance, but honestly. . . I cannot choose between her and Meryl because Meryl completely slayed and gave so much depth and humanity to this.
@@honeybee7197 Bernadette gave the perfect vocals, but Meryl gave the whole body expression of frustration. I love her arms in "you'll just do what you do", and we can hear the "you're fucking idiots and you'll just fuck it up again and again and this drives me up the fucking wall!"

Well, you can blame another witch It's the last midnight It's the last verse Now, before it's past midnight I'm leaving you my last curse I'm leaving you alone You can tend the garden, it's yours Separate and alone Everybody down on all fours All right, mother, when? Lost the beans again! Punish me the way you did then! Give me claws and a hunch Just away from this bunch And the gloom And the doom And the boom Cruuunch!
DADGUM Boi It occurs to me that the “when” after Alright Mother is more an exclamation than a question, as in “Once you have enough, say ‘when’.” I could be wrong, of course, just throwing it out there.
I think the artistic choice this movie made (vs the original cast production and other productions I've seen) that really got me was how they had the Witch holding the Baby right before this song. It made so much sense to me; the Beginning and the End, the Parent and the Child, Life and Death. The reason all of this has happened, and well, another reason all of this has happened. In the end, every fairy tale starts with a witch holding a baby that's not hers, raising it to inevitably make (so she says) the same mistakes as the parents did. The cycle is inevitable, life continues to live on despite the wolves and giants. Who is the Witch to argue with that?
I thought it was interesting that she was holding the baby too. Giving her SHHHH more of a maternal feel. And in some ways, she is a maternal figure to the other characters. No matter what you do, children won't listen.
"...like his son WILL be too..." I love how casually the Witch predicts the future while singing. This musical has so many details, its amazingly good.
I remember always arriving at this part when doing my auditorium walkthroughs. Loved this sequence, it's like the witch just "F you all and kill me now, because these people are garbage."
The whole Last Midnight sequence was a point that caused people to hate it due to the earlier plot change of (Spoiler Warning if you haven’t seen the actual musical) Rapunzel not dying. In the movie, Last Midnight is basically “I’m tired with you all, because all of you are really terrible people”. In the musical, it’s this as well BUT there’s also a darker edge of “my daughter is fricking dead, and I have no will to live anymore”. Without Rapunzel’s death, you never see this aspect in the song.
Does anybody else feel like the Witch was completely right in this instance? If they had simply given Jack to the Giant they could have saved everybody a lot of pain and suffering. I mean Jack is guilty of theft and homicide, it only seems right that they hand him over to the one that he wronged.
@@vamprose3058 well the giant could also claim self-defense considering the fact that Jack was intruding on private property without permission a.k.a breaking and entering. Would you just sit still in a corner if someone broke into your place?
That is the eternal question off the play, and of life. Something can be right, but also bad, someone can be nice but not good, someone can be good but not right. Is there any time that the three can truly be said to intersect? Is it possible to be good AND nice AND right? I say absolutely not. So we all pick and choose what suits us, or develop our own moral codes and that is why we humans can never seem to really see eye-to-eye.
Meryl Streep knows how to play a beloved Broadway character without being too over the top and she gave it so much depth and emotion. A truly a great actress.
cathy thea2003 Meryl Streep was nominated before for that same award for the devil wear prada and lost it.. It´s also the very first witch she plays, mostrly she plays bitches. When she turned 30 she was offered 3 witches in 1 year, she turned down because she thinks that role demonaises a woman and also she thougt; turning 30 and 3 witches offered in the same year ¿? . So it ´s the first one for Meryl. I trully honor her integrity to do the part and hope she will do more.
This song is very interesting as it justifies the witch misanthropy. She's the designated villain for all of this, the one that is considered the "bad one" even though they all made careless, selfish actions. The witch really gets something right by making them understand that being nice won't make them good and it ties so well into the general message of anti-manichaeism moral of the musical. At the end of the day, she was just a parent who wanted to protect her child and is no worse than the Baker, his wife, Cinderella or Jack et cetera.
I'm not a particular fan of the rest of the movie, but this song and specifically the opening 26 seconds are fantastic. "You're not good, you're not bad, you're just nice" is the best description for modern culture that there is. And it's a perfect insult for anyone you know who lacks a spine. *chef's kiss*
She can do no wrong in my eyes. Absolutely fabulous, this woman. I love the original theater musical, and Mamma Mia was my childhood, so the marriage of both those with the outstanding embodiment of Meryl Streep is my wet dream.
I guess her last curse is to leave the world without magic resulting in no easy way to do things ( since magic is gone ) therefore people would not be able to depend on magic users bit themselves now.
I love how unapologetic Meryl Streep is. The acting and sheer, bitter emotion in this was phenomenal. I'm no theatre buff, but the other versions I watched felt too reserved (except Vanessa, who ripped off that wig like a boss).
The ironic part is this was genuinely the role of “witches” throughout Europe in the Medieval Ages. Any famine, any act of misfortune that seemed out of place, any unfortunate “illness” on a woman or man, a witch was to blame. And in other words, it was a woman to blame. Meryl was originally sceptical because she didn’t like the stereotype of the witch being an evil old hag but she played it beautifully and put through the message. Women were blamed for all sorts of things, things they couldn’t control or had nothing to do with. Women were the scapegoat of the entire World, practically no country was exempt. There will always be an example of classic sexism and awful treatment of women. The symbolism of the witch can be interpreted in many different ways but the interpretation I love is that we have a powerful, strong and intelligent woman. A woman who hasn’t actually done any wrong except take someone’s child and cared for it better than they would have been able to since they were quite poor and in response to them stealing from her and corrupting her physically. A woman, who in all respects, was simply trying to get by in a life that hated her for something she was born into. Here, it’s her magic powers. The reality, it’s her vagina, her body, her very being of femininity. Despite all this, despite her lack of any flaws, society still found some way to hate her and discriminate against her and ostracise her. And for that, women paid the price. An easy and weak power in a country, women posed little threat in those times. And thus, were so easily destroyed. It’s really quite sad. Even here, she is being logical and fair. Trying to protect hundreds by giving up one. Contrary to the typical stereotype of women being too emotional and incapable of making hard decisions but she was the only one doing so. She did everything that people believe women cannot do or that people believe men do better. No matter all this, she still fails. There was a certain futility about it.
I agree with everything, but what does “women had to suffer many trials and tribulations” have to do with this film? My memory is a little rusty because it’s been while since I’ve watched this film, but wasn’t the witch hated just for being a witch? True, she was born a witch and was hated for being a witch, but that doesn’t have anything to do with sex or gender. Even back in medieval times, a witch could be a man or a woman, but they were mostly associated with women. Though, if the witch was born a male in this movie, it wouldn’t make much of a difference. This movie isn’t about a women that was mistreated for being born a women, it’s about the revelation on how backwards the world really is. To quote another comment on this comment section, the witch basically gave up after realizing just how heinous this world really is. You can follow all the rules, mind your own business, and still be punished for your neighbor’s misdeeds, while your neighbor gets their happily ever after. True, the witch is a freaking queen, and I love her so much. Like, UGH such an underrated character 😌, but again, this isn’t about the trials and tribulations that women had to go through in the medieval era, so why bring it up? Whether the witch is born a man or a woman has nothing to do with the plot of the movie. (Sorry for sounding a bit rude. I promise, I don’t mean any harm.)
@@yahirs4508 My point was specifically about Meryl’s hesitance to play the role. Witches are historically considered female and inherently their infamous nature was towards free women too. Movies and especially musicals have meaning in everything it does. Whilst Into the Woods isn’t centred around women the point still holds in a general sense.
Yes misogyny is the norm. And we still make the same mistakes. In ancient Greece they had Helen as a scapegoat, the first story we have in the west blaming only a woman for a war

She's 65 but she's so flawless... The way she acts it just flows with her, so natural. Her expressions and movements are just so perfect, not to mention the intense song and the great music. LOVE IT.
Jorge Rosales I’m sorry she’s 65? I thought she was 45 or something!
I just love that meryl just causally pulls beans out off her bra
Amber Robinson lmao
Now that you mentioned it...
I'm yelling i've never noticed that before
Amber Robinson I did not see that
They were made for making people rich. 😳
i just realized that she keeps repeating the boom SQUISH, boom SPLAT etc because in the stage version we hear that she saw rapunzel, her daughter, being stepped on by the giant. she keeps repeating it because her mind is suck on that traumatizing moment. and with rapunzel gone, there's nothing left to keep her to the world, and so she does anything she can to be punished.
What?! That seriously happened?!
@@twyla9559 yes, in the original ITW Rapunzel gets trampled by the giant. i recommend finding recordings of stage versions...the material gets darker, yes, but more layered!
the rest of the comment was just a bit of lyric/character analysis on my part, so that's not canonical.
@@IloveHobbits1995 Plus, unlike in the movie, after the baker's wife dies post her fling with the prince, the prince moves on to hook up with another lady
There was actually no special effects, it's just Meryl
She sings so well lightning and wind come out of nowhere.
I wish I can do that
Merly Streep is just that damn amazing man.
Matheus Barros Costa It wouldn't surprise me.
She melted just for that scene! She's so committed to the part, what a talented actress god rest her gooey soul
I can't believe Meryl Streep is 65 YEARS OLD!

Ya Shaquille Staley
AngelinaPlaysGames APG In fact she´s gonna be 66 Next June 22: unbelievable.
On August "Ricky and The Flash" will be released, movie in which she is a rock star , a mother. This woman just won´t stop.
As much as I didn't want to see The Witch leave, she left with purpose. She left giving them her last curse, which was actually what really stopped the giant. In the end, she wasn't good, she wasn't nice, she was right.
The gesture when she says "I'm the witch" is golden.
I love when Meryl just screams “Alright mother, when!!!”, just that anger and frustrations and bitterness shining through the roughness of her voice.
I love the first lines. "You're so nice...You're not good. You're not bad. You're just nice. I'm not good..." The lines and the music are bloody brilliant. And her facial expression just wow. At 0:15 👌
I'm so obsessed with how she says, "You're not good- you're not bad; you're just nice." Lol 😂
"I'M MELTING! MELTING! OH WHAT A WORLD!"

I remember 8 year old me was so impressed by this in theaters. Literally everything in that movie went over my head except how iconic Meryl streep was in this.
If we ever get a Tangled live action Meryl must play Gothel
Probably not till the next decade
Fun fact! Gothel's voice actress Donna Murphy her role of the witch in a Broadway version of "into the woods".
Another fun fact this version has vocals by Donna Murphy herself interspersed with Meryl Streep's.
@@SnazzyjazzBro I was gonna say! And from what I can gather, Gothel's design was basically just Donna Murphy in a Cher wig, so God forbid they remake Tangled, Donna Murphy would fit the bill

VStodder because those peopel are stupid and dont get what real art is
She's a very smart witch
She's a witch who prepares
Not smart enough to avoid throwing away her mother's beans and then be destroyed where she stands.
futuremovieactor she did that on purpose
I got that.
Streep. fucking. KILLED this role. While she isn't as good as the original, she REALLY nailed the feel of the Witch. Like. Got damn.
I think she did much better than the original imo.
+Dean Wilson imo too
Wait, you're saying Steep did better then Bernadette Peters, who brought brilliant comedic timing, and power and sass to the role she originated, is that right?
i'm not familiar with the original, but does it matter if Meryl was better or the original singer?
Meryl Streep slayed the witch and honestly she slays all her performances. She's my favourite actress she's my inspiration.
I think it's just, yk, the beans were what caused the first and second problems in the story and they don't want a dozen more
I like your theory, but they are picking them up in a panic. They don't want more bean stalks and potentially more giants coming down.
they were picking up the beans so no other beanstalks would grow
No? The beans conjured the giants to come in the first place.
this song makes so much more sense in the original broadway production.
Being real, this is probably the only scene in the whole movie that perfectly adapts the stage musical.
Granted Meryl is not Bernadette vocally...she is still Meryl effing Streep and a LEGEND in every sense of the word. She made this version her own.
Cheyenne Cook her vocals are fkin amazing
I love Bernadette's performance, but honestly. . . I cannot choose between her and Meryl because Meryl completely slayed and gave so much depth and humanity to this.
In my opinion Meryl’s performance had so much more emotion in it. I could actually feel the lyrics. Bernadette didn’t give that to me.
I like Meryl's voice better.
Lyrics:
Just give me the boy
No! (No)
No?
You're so nice
You're not good
You're not bad
You're just nice
I'm not good
I'm not nice
I'm just right
I'm the witch
You're the world
I'm a hitch
I'm what no one believes
I'm the witch
You're all liars and thieves
Like his father
Like his son will be, too
Oh, why bother?
You'll just do what you do
It's the last midnight
So, goodbye all
Coming at you fast, midnight
Soon you'll see the sky fall
Here, you want a bean?
Have another bean
Beans were made for making you rich!
Plant them and they soar
Here, you want some more?
Listen to the roar
Giants by the score!
Well, you can blame another witch
It's the last midnight
It's the last verse
Now, before it's past midnight
I'm leaving you my last curse
I'm leaving you alone
You can tend the garden, it's yours
Separate and alone
Everybody down on all fours
All right, mother, when?
Lost the beans again!
Punish me the way you did then!
Give me claws and a hunch
Just away from this bunch
And the gloom
And the doom
And the boom
Cruuunch!
Julia Whitmore the Broadway revival with Vanessa Williams did this too!
I love how Meryl says "I'm leaving you alone" while thunder strikes and that expression when she does that 👌 spot on great acting
I can't believe people hated this movie. I guess it was too real for them. All actions have consequences.
Brent Thomas it's because it wasn't faithful enough to the source material
I liked it in a vacuum, but, as the guy above me said, it wasn't fateful to the source material, which threw people off before they even saw it.
I'm glad it strayed from the source material.
Now I don't have to look at a wolf penis while watching a disney movie. How awkward.
0:06 freaking amazing acting. You can see the witch just give up and realize they're not worth it. Like "Oh well! I tried!"
One of the most underrated film adaptions.
She has a amazing voice and till 00:32 it kind a reminds me of when you fighting with someone and trying to show your right
Does anybody else feel like the Witch was completely right in this instance? If they had simply given Jack to the Giant they could have saved everybody a lot of pain and suffering. I mean Jack is guilty of theft and homicide, it only seems right that they hand him over to the one that he wronged.
Technically the homicide could be classed as self defense the giant was going to kill him
@@vamprose3058 well the giant could also claim self-defense considering the fact that Jack was intruding on private property without permission a.k.a breaking and entering.
So we all pick and choose what suits us, or develop our own moral codes and that is why we humans can never seem to really see eye-to-eye.
her character is basically the voice of reason throughout the story
Maybe Jack should be fighting the giant if she wants him or give himself up to save everyone
This woman's voice is the definition of flawless.

Meryl Streep knows how to play a beloved Broadway character without being too over the top and she gave it so much depth and emotion. A truly a great actress.
After all Meryl Streep did won an MTV award for best villain
Luv it
cathy thea2003 Meryl Streep was nominated before for that same award for the devil wear prada and lost it..
Yep and luv her
Soo much
cathy thea2003 She bit
I love the original theater musical, and Mamma Mia was my childhood, so the marriage of both those with the outstanding embodiment of Meryl Streep is my wet dream.
ngl meryl streep slayed that role
I’m leaving you my last curse. I’m leaving you alone.
That line really resonated with me because it’s one of my greatest fears.
This is the best version! Her emotion, small gestures and movements and her acting says it all!
do you guys realize her last curse is to vanish yo leave us alone in this world without magic
Meryl streep is just so. Powerful.
Agree
For someone not famous for her singing, she’s incredible! This is a very difficult Sondheim score!
She has been in 4 musical movies now. Are you sure?
Acutually this is a common myth sjw. Witches were considered fake until the 15th century.
Yes misogyny is the norm. And we still make the same mistakes.
In ancient Greece they had Helen as a scapegoat, the first story we have in the west blaming only a woman for a war
My whole theater applauded after this.
Meryl really said, let me show you how to get an Oscar nomination in two minutes. 0:05-0:58 is my favorite part. She just nails that feeling of being so fed up with people who also outnumber you and thus override your position on a matter. The fairy tale group project from hell.
