Terrific showcase, Chris. I love this idea of regional cinema. I'll be adding these to the queue soon enough!

Good video Chris. It has finally dawned on my that your videos remind me a little of moviedrome. An old show from the late 80's early 90's where Alex Cox would introduce and talk about a movie and then it would be screened. I found so many great films I would otherwise never have seen before through that show. Good stuff sir!

Thanks buddy. That's the ultimate compliment and one that is pretty much the mission statement of the channel. Hopefully there are plenty more to come! :)

Wonderful video Chris! I love the idea of highlighting regions or countries that don't get enough love for their cinema. I was vaguely aware of RMN, but it's one I'll certainly seek out now as it sounds really interesting, and of course disturbingly relevant. I've never heard of Everyone in our family before, or Jude as a director, but it's another one I'll add to my list for the next Arrow sale for sure. Following on from our mutual enjoyment for Lunana: A yak in the classroom, Bhutan would be a great one to highlight. I mentioned how much I like the film on reddit and someone recommended me Travellers and Magicians, another well received film from there. I still need to pick it up (I think there is just a US DVD release of it, and the shipping is like £6 which keeps putting me off!), but I wonder if there is more to discover from that country.

You've sent me down a rabbit hole lol. I watched the Cup by the same director as Travellers and Magicians and it was a thoughtful, quiet film that has some recognisable themes and ideas. I'd never have thought about Bhutan so I'll need to carve out a bit of time to find them as well as watch them. There is a neverending pit of incredible cinema out there that is begging to be discovered :) Appreciate the comment and inspiration as always buddy.

Not surprisingly I haven’t seen any Mungui films of course. It sounds all very modern to me. Unfortunately the people who need to watch socially aware films will never see them. Which is why we are all doomed. Great work sir as expected.

Isn't that the truth?! Subtitles? Reading? Ugh....
Fortunately for us, they carry lots of value in terms of being great films but also windows into how other people live. Thanks for watching as always :)

Thanks, Chris! I’m a big fan of Second Run releases. They are probably the most underrated label here in the UK. Just about every single one of their films that I’ve seen has been excellent. I never think twice about buying their films if I like the sound of them.
Romanian films are probably one of the least released films for a European country. I must confess that I have seen several of them but would struggle to name them. My bad. I try to see as many East European films as possible, so I watched this post immediately I saw it.
Because politically right-wingers have picked on this issue, even before the current public misbehaviour began, it’s good to get a sense of how other societies view these social issues, isn’t it? Immigrants are vital to most countries, but due to politics of various types, they are under-valued and put down in many ways.
Likewise, when it comes to parenting, men are often down-played in their roles for a variety of reasons, many self-inflicted as a group if not by individuals. I could not have failed to parent my daughter under any circumstances I can imagine, but not all males feel the same. Men are not even the best talkers, often, in terms of dealing with the most important issues that families face. I will look this film out.
Thanks for covering these two films, Chris, they sound like excellent choices for investigation.

I completely agree Richard. Even the most experimental films on Second Run carry plenty of interest. Its the label that would make the best film school if I was to limit myself to one label,
I fear East European cinema is still quite hard to come by in the UK, and feels like such a great area to find something new and interesting.
Couldn't agree more about the important role immigration plays in supporting the economy of many countries. We rarely hear about this side of the story, which is very disappointing.
Portrayal of men in terms of family is always going to be a work in progress. My children are the most important part of my life - superceding my own existence but as you note, not all men feel the same.
Really appreciate your comments, really thoughtful. Take care

Hi Steve. It was definitely a case of thinking of you when I was thinking of highlighting these two film makers and region. I've ordered the DVD of Stuff and Dough already so I'm already on the ball :)

A great idea for a video series, not least for causing me to realise that the only Romanian film I've seen is Puiu's The Death of Mr Lazarescu, which is, I recall, a worthwhile watch, if also sighing, black comedy of a sad situation. I've owned 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days on DVD since it was released, but despite picking it off the shelf a few times, I've never managed to find the right time to forcibly depress myself (you'll tell me it's a laugh riot now!). Of course, I'm now going to have my head turned by Second Run's Everybody in our Family. Those Second Run releases often seem bleak and turn out a treat.

Cheers :) The Death of Mr Lazarescu is one thats come up a lot in the comments here. Its been added to the (neverending) list of things I want to watch tonight, no delay ! Second Run always deliver something a bit left of centre - they may not all land 100% but never boring

Good topic, Chris. I’d be interested to see both of these. For Mungiu the only film of his I have seen so far is 4 Weeks 3 Months and 2 Days which was really impactful, a great movie. And for Jude, I have only seen the bizarrely named Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn, which went in to some really interesting discussion area before getting to quite a wild ending. I’m not sure how many other Romanian films I have seen, possibly only The Death of Mr Lazarescu

Thanks Neil, sounds like you have plenty of experience with Romanian cinema. I suspect, like a lot of films in Eastern Europe we'll only have a fraction of films available to us. They also have some of the best names in cinema. More films should have Loony in their title :)
