Extraordinary.
Commiserations to Cal but congratulations to TRC. Great that the cameras were there to pick it up - coaches will surely be using that as a teaching aid for years to come, both about holding it together when exhausted and under pressure, and about not giving up until the race is over.
I feel so bad for those guys
So did we but it’s a race to the finish line, not a few booms before.
Unlike the boys at Cal, 3/4 of the Thames boat were working 40-65+ hours a week while also trying to juggle 1-2 sessions a day alongside their full time jobs. Not taking away from the Berkeley boys and their amazing row (up until the end) but I'm glad for the Thames boys.

God this hurts me to watch every time. If the cal fellas ever see this comment, know I feel for y’all.
History repeating itself when Trident beat Thames Tradesmen some years ago
Watch the bowman in slowmo the 10 strokes before they hit the booms... oops!
😱😱😱
fuckin' rip
Метро Беломорская
bit of a hollow victory
But if Cal had done that off the end of the island you wouldnt be saying that, they made a mistake it just happened to be in the last 5 strokes
Not really. Steering is also part of the race. Thames (a) hung in when behind, not losing composure and (b) steered straight. Cal B. let themselves get flustered in a hard race and the steersman lost it - perhaps because bowside faded catastrophically in the last few strokes. Tough luck, certainly - but the race is never over until you hit the line.
Not if you know anything about the event, rowing, or these two programmes.
They had pretty much rowed them down/ to a standstill before they hit the booms. Absolutely brilliant and brutal race
I've developed a FREE rowing channel on the Roku streaming device. Would you be interested in sharing your video content?
It’s a testament to how badly Thames rowed that race that even after Cal messed up, they STILL almost coasted across the finish line ahead of TRC. Of course, that didn’t stop the Thames lads from hamming it up on the award stand. So, a lot of poor TRC performances that day.
What are you on about? There was only a length in it when Cal crashed, which I doubt they would have done had they not been under pressure. And by the time Cal crosses the line you literally cannot even see Thames' stern anymore.
Sounds like you've got a bad case of the ol' sour grapes my friend :)
Interesting take. Do you know much about the background to this?
