In my opinion Thesaloniki is one of the most beautiful city in the world. I visited this beautiful town for the last time ( I've been there ther 20 times and I'll be there as long as I live) this summer. We found a small tavern in the old city kept by a very beautiful woman named Maria, and her husband. We were their clients every evening in that trip. One night, we found the husband singing and i said, making a joke "Kalispera, Mister Mitropanos !", beacause he sang Roza, as I understood.... His wife, Maria, who met us a evening ago, heard me... She made the cross sign and she said ... "Mitropanos in Romania ? You know about Mitropanos?" I felt tears in my eyes and I still feel tears in my eyes when I'm writing this story ... I answered her that we have a comnon history together, a history which is 2000 years old... I told her the I know about Mitropanos, and Terzis, and Kazantzidis ....but i also know about the plain of Marathon and Salamina, and Themistocles, and The Great Eschilos! I told her that we have in Romania cities build by greeks... and she recomanded me to listen to .... Dallaras .... And we recomanded her some songs by The Highwayman.
We felt so close to those people from that small tavern. We talked about everything we could talk....
This is the story about us and MARIA FROM THESALONIKI.. And this is why I'll allways say EFHARISTO GREEECE and GREEK PEOPLE! Efaristo, not only for every splendid holiday which I spend on your beautiful land ... but for everything that you gave to the human civilization ... AND THANK YOU, MARIA FROM THESALONIKI, FOR EVERY TASTY MEAL THAT WE HAD IN YOUR TAVERN.

The city is named after 'Niki' (Victory) who was the sister of Alexander the Great
The Region of Thesaly was given to 'Niki' and hense the name of the City: Thesalo-Niki.

'Niki' means victory, and 'Thessalia' is a region of Central Greece.
'Niki' or 'Victory' was the sister of 'Alexander the Great and the city was named after her and the Region of Thessalia (Thessalo +Niki) which region was given to her as a wedding gift by her fatther Philip of Macedonia.

It was victory ovsr the thessalians the reason this name was created. And then, after name created, after years, Cassander gave the name and married Alexanders sister to give to himself political recognition lile evsryone did. Only alconnection to Alex made someone legitimate king. So he gave city name to Alex sister. But not fir reason you wrotr above. It was because Philip beat Thessalians after any many years and then found his wife us pregnant (thessalians used to terrorize Macedonians for centuries, they were perhaps the hardest opponemt to beat, they had great cavalry and the best horses.) that he gave that name to his daughter which didnt exist before. And Alex used Thessalian cavalry on his campaign.
