We are recently retired and traveling from Mexico to Argentina in search of our favorite retirement city. Arequipa is high on our list. We are currently in Nicaragua and will be here until February… Then 6 months in Guatemala and 6 months in Mexico. After that we may fly to Colombia to stay in Medellin and Manizales… Cuenca, Ecuador… Arequipa…. Tarija Buenas Aires Bariloche I may have left out a few…. So if you were advising your parents…. Best country/city to retire ? Oh, and we need cool weather ! Thx ! Great video !
You’ve named some pretty amazing places!! We think the best thing to do is exactly what you’re doing: visit each place and spend some time there, then pick the one that works best for you. And don’t forget to look at hidden things like healthcare, immigration requirements, safety, ease of travel, and political stability. Arequipa and Peru are amazing and definitely worth checking out!

This is my plan as well when it's time to retire. I would also include south east asia. My only problem with south east asia is that it's too far from Canada.
@ We have been to Thailand twice and enjoyed it BUT we love cool weather which then limits us to Dalat, Vietnam or Baguio City, Philippines…that’s about it.

@@therehastobesomethingmoore I hope you find the best place to retire that meets your criteria and please let us know so we can add it to our list. I still have a long way to go before retirement but it's nice to be ready.
Arequipa is my favorite Peruvian city. I was there for Holy Week. The best time. I stayed in a hostel a block from Plaza de Armes for $10 a night with breakfast.
I am visiting Peru in Jenuary and i'll be having 3 days in Arequipa! Could be kind enough to tell me where can I book the tour in this beautiful lake you showed us? Thank you! :)
It’s Salinas Lake. We just booked with the hotel when we arrived. You can ask your hotel/host or try one of the tourism vendors by the main square (just check reviews first). It’s a cool lake to visit!
I am currently living in the neighborhood of Yanauara Arequipa. One of my favorite cities to live in the 4 years of travel. Great city, Great food, Great people. And yes very cheap. I eat out 7days a week, 3 times a day for around $12.00.
For the Silar Route and Salinas Lake we just booked last minute with the hotel we were staying at. For the Colca Canyon we used www.oasispalmerastravel.com/3-days-and-2-night/ We hope you have a good time in Arequipa!
Would Arequipa, Peru be a good city to live longterm as in retirement?. It looks like there is a lot to see and do. The food looks delicious! Can you find rent for $250 on the outskirts of the city, or in the suburbs?. I’m interested in Arequipa! 😊
Arequipa is an amazing city and so beautiful with the 3 volcanos surrounding it. It's also very affordable. In terms of retirement, it really depends on what you're looking for. You need to consider the culture, politics, health care, ease of traveling around, and your level of Spanish. If you're thinking about retiring in Arequipa, make sure you spend a few months there first to get a feel for the lifestyle before making any longer-term decisions.
@@ChrisAndEmilieHow safe is Arequipa compared to Lima and other places such as Cuenca Ecuador, Pereira Colombia etc.?? And are there older expats living in Arequipa??
We didn’t really notice any breathing issues in Arequipa itself. There are some higher elevation areas outside Arequipa though if you go on excursions and stuff.
If you have other hobbies and want to spend some time taking in the city, it’s a great place to hang out for a few weeks! Just don’t expect a lot of major attractions, with a new place to visit each day.
We didn’t experience any altitude sickness in Arequipa or in Cusco, which is quite a bit higher. But everyone is different and we definitely met people who weren’t feeling as good, especially in Cusco. I think one thing that really helped us is taking time to acclimatize, instead of jumping into activities right away, but being able to do that really depends on how long you’re able to stay.
Arequipa is also known as "The White City" because of the volcanic rock, sillar, that faces the old buildings. Arequipa has the best produce, beef, and dairy as well! Be sure to visit the Convent downtown, Santa Catalina! The vicunas were almost driven into extinction by the Spanish. Under the Incas, only the aristocracy could use their wool.
It was awesome that you saw the lovely vicuña. This is the animal depicted in the national seal of Peru and this is the reason why: ruclips.net/video/TyZkUsYupm8/видео.html At the end of your video you ate at a Picanteria, a type of restaurant unique to Arequipa and some parts of Peru that predates restaurants that started in the 1800. What’s the difference? It is a country restaurant with more picnic tables where sharing a table is encouraged.
Absolutely beautiful vacation , I must go with my wife this year ( I think she loves the llamas more than her husband lol )
We hope you have a great time! The Colca Canyon is also beautiful and just a few hours from Arequipa.
Thank you! Love Arequipa and your style and enthusiasm, on my short list to visit
I'm from Arequipa. My beautiful city ❤
What's the name of the mini volcano and hot springs, please?
My wife is from there!! I'm looking forward to accompanying her when she goes back home (currently in Spain).
We hope you have a great trip!

Cool video, just curious which tour company u booked with for the salt lake tour ?
I’m not sure of the name. We just booked it through the small hotel we were staying at.
Hello! Great video! I'm planning a trip to Arequipa. Where did you find the affordable tours? Thanks!
Thanks! We stayed at a small locally-run hotel and we booked our tours through them. We hope you have a great trip!

If mangoes and coconuts grow there, I'm ready to move there now. Do they?
Super visit, thanks. When you say the tours were $7 and $20 is that $7 each or for both of you?
Thanks for watching! The prices are per person :-)
what's the best way to get to your hotel from the airport in Arequipa?
We chatted with the hotel on WhatsApp and they arranged for a taxi to pick us up.

Our most recent series is on Petra BTW.
Yet another city worth looking into when you're in Peru next time: Cajamarca. It's locate in the north of the country at around 2,000 metres up.
Awesome! Thanks for the recommendation!

do you think it's ok to spend 3-4 weeks there? trying to shoot some videos :)

You can have a long rent of 300 square meters house with 900usd per.month !!! 😅
It's not Erequipa, but Arequipa.
I'm American and I'm embarrassed they couldn't pronounce it right lol 😅
Thanks!

you guys know peru more than a native peruvian . ME!!!!! 😩
It’s such a beautiful country!! We’re so glad we were able to spend so much time there!
would be improved if you pronounced the city's name correctly
Thanks! It's always great to get feedback from someone who's fluent in Spanish!
Another reasonably priced item? Coca, for $10 a gram!
