I’m no poker expert but he wasn’t that impressive. If I was playing Daniel’s hand, after the first three cards were flipped I would stay in for either a 3 or a 6 and make my decision on the 4th card. Seeing a 3 right after, I wouldn’t have to think too hard about staying in and would be able to focus all my brainpower on being an ass across the table

Phil Hellmuth is not the greatest poker player ever. He doesn’t play enough poker to be considered the best. Phil would have to rank in the top 25 consistently and he hasn’t. He does win WSOP bracelets against bad players or gets lucky. If Daniel Negreanu won all of his 2nd places in WSOP he probably would be tied with Phil. Daniel is very unlucky when he goes all in he usually gets rivered. I don’t think there is a GOAT poker player because there’s so many great players. I can tell you that young Phil H was a very polite and engaging gentleman with us (total strangers to him) when we played golf with him in Vegas back in '91. I still remember that enjoyable round. He simply said he "played cards" and let me try his Ti-shafted driver that he had recently won in a poker tournament. Not a hint of ego was detected. Found out much later that he was a big shot poker player. His antics at the table are just part of his play style. I still consider him a genuine good guy.

This is a debatable point. He is undoubtedly the best tournament player with buyins below 10k but he does seem to struggle against the top tournament pros in the high roller and super high roller events.
Phil has a huge edge since he's a professional player against the average 10k< field since most of them are amateur players or mid-low level pros. I don't think anyone would care at all about this except he consistently brags about how he's the greatest poker player of all time.
Can Phil be considered a great tournament player if he beats up mostly bad players? Probably to each their own, but I would personally say no. For me, it's like saying Jimmer Fredette is the greatest basketball player of all time because he owns the CBA players. Yes he is the best CBA player but if you threw him in the NBA he would not even have a roster spot.

Phil is underrated. In the 80's and 90's poker was "unstudied" and the best strategist made the most money; not the best student i.e. the one who studies the most. Phil should absolutely be credited for his natural born talent and ability to "solve" the game before solvers or general strategical advice. His dominance in the 80's and 90's put him in the conversation as the GOAT, and so does his WSOP bracelet count - but less so in my opinion as this is more to do with how many events a player enters. To say he is the GOAT is not to say he is the best at poker in the current climate. Almost no-one would say he's the greatest since the 2000's. And before the 2000's it's still debatable. And that's the great thing about poker, it's really hard to tell who's good because of the variance.

Hellmuth is better in large MTTs though, and much tougher to play against. When Ivey is card dead, he is gonna be quiet and concentrate on protecting his money. When Hellmuth is card dead, he is gonna try to do weird shit that sometimes may work. And btw - all his talk about how he hates GTO, how he doesn't study theory and how he uses "white magic" instead and whatever - that is a load of bs. Hellmuth spends at least 5-6 hours with coaches and solvers every day.
