At first I don't understand why would we have another Tank with a light armor when we already had the Leopard 2RI, but I forgot about what sort of threat the country's trying to fight on. Thank you for the video, a really good plus detailed one on the Tank. Can't wait to see them doing great on the field soon.
The Leopard 2's are just too heavy for hilly and jungles terrain of Indonesia. Its also too THICC for puny rural bridges. Its like japanese Type74 but lighter and more modern.
Even though it is called 'Medium Tank', it is firmly a light tank when considering modern standards. Compared to other modern light tanks, like the M8 AGS, ZTQ-15 Black Panther, CV90 105mm, or Type 16 MCV, the Kaplan weighs around the same about 30-35 tonnes. The reason it's called medium tank is because Indonesia has older service light tanks like the Scorpion and AMX-13 which weigh way less.
Light, medium, heavy is subjective. Some countries rated them on weight (important if you have lots of bridges that do not support certain weights, for example) and some on firepower. And of course the numbers change over time. For Hungary, once upon a time, they used 75mm caliber guns and above as a designation for heavy tanks. Plenty of smaller tanks around that had 37-57mm caliber guns. You always need to look at a name in context. Besides that, given the performance of Russia hardware in Ukraine and certain munitions available to the Harimau, I think it would not entirely be improper to label it a heavy tank. After all, it would pull greatly above its weight. Give Ukraine a couple of hundreds of tanks and plenty of the higher end munitions and it would leave little of Russian generals around to be impressed. (Which is better than still having them around to be impressed.) On the other hand, based on armor thickness, and mobility one might also call it a light tank. It's a very well balanced engineering solution specific to Indonesia's circumstances.
It's a good thing that the Indonesian-Turkish Harimau/Kaplan is getting more recognition Hopefully more SEA-made armored vehicles such as the AV8 Gempita(which is also jointly developed by the same Turkish manufacturer) get featured in this channel as well
@@kardusdigembok9933DefTech is taking the first steps of exporting the AV8 Gempita. The company has sent at least one AV8 Gempita, which is the variant of AFV30 to Saudi Arabia for trials in August/September 2018.
Indos-Tanks look so sick I really love the design interior/exterior. I keep following since first revealed couple years ago. Keep developing this is one of many important projects. With love from Bangkok. Thai-Indonesian we are family.
harimau is designed to be used in Indonesia , because many bridges in my country could only support 40 tons vehicles , also hilly contours and valleys terrain would be verry difficult for main battle tank with 62 tons weight to be operated , so this is more clever choice , i think

Light Tanks proved successful to quell Aceh separatists in 2003, especially when enemy has inadequate anti-tank capacity, sadly most western countries banned Indonesia to use their their arsenal for counter-insurgency, like England did with FV101 Scorpion. So it makes sense for Indonesia to build/co-build their own Tanks.
@@KakaUmbraLunar lucky what? GAM's strength is only around 5000 troops, and 2000 separatist troops have died and they have been cornered. The tsunami only brought them back to reality and not many Acehnese supported GAM.
When the Indonesian Army (TNI AD) decided to procured the Leopard 2 MBT, I was among those who opposed it. Not because of ground sinking theory but because of the reason explained in the video. Back then, a platform like CV-90 with 105/120mm would have made more sense. Now with the Harimau, finally TNI AD has some proper high mobility packed with serious firepower assets
It's actually more make sense for Indonesian armed forces (both army and marine) to have this medium tanks, because keep in mind that Indonesia is consist of a bunch of island and the only way to enemy to fully occupied Indonesia territory is by amphibious invasion, so Indonesian MBT (army) can focus on defending the city, meanwhile the harimau medium tanks can be use to denied entry of enemy amphibious forces. Also medium tanks can be easily transport by A400M when the MBT have to be transported by C17 Globemaster. So yeah, this medium tanks can relieve some of the task of the MBT, and the MBT can focus more on other task.
They should've made 2 variants. A medium variant and a main battle variant. That way, it is easy to maintain and having a better accessibility of spare parts.
well you cant, the turret are unsuitable to use 120mm gun because cmi cockerill didnt have that autolading mechanisnm for 120mm and cmi only have 105mm rifled gun, not a smoothbore gun like leopard 2 or other western MBT

Previously I was confused why they use Medium Tank designation, since the main weapon is 105 cannon, while there are some light tank with 120 cannon as main weapon. Now, thx to your video, I understand. They designated this tank as medium tank because of the better armor than light tank, while not as heavy/expensive as MBT. I think there will be a lot of demand for this tank, especially after what happened to MBTs and other armors at Ukraine. Expensive MBT without modern protection such as active kill and passive kill is an expensive target that can be killed with many inexpensive means. While IFV and Light tank with modern protection but rather weak armor are vulnerable to mine, IED or even high powered anti armor rifle.
120 mm on a light platform isn't a good thing mostly. First is the platform possibly can't sustain the 120mm recoil, second is ammunition well because it's a small platform of course it can't bring a lot of rounds, third is the cannon itself yeah it's 120mm but is it like the MBT version? Or weaker one to accommodate the light platform 'lightness'. Armor wise the difference between light and medium platform aren't that many, an IFV cannon will be able to penetrate or disable both while the medium one will have a better survivability against mine/IED
considering the bridge quality of indonesia this is actually quite ideal and considering most of the inland threats indonesia currently faced it doesn't really require super thick armor like an MBT
@@90enemies the harimau are using thicker plate armor than sabra or any other medium tank, that's why harimau is heavier. but its size is smaller than main battle tank. and 105mm cannon is enough to kill another medium tank. iv any country would invade indonesia, on land they will deploy light tank or apv because if they deployed main battle tank, it will just stuck in the mud because its too heavy for soft and muddy indonesia soil. so the harimau is so perfectly suited for indonesian army
@@ReinhardtX57 Muddy? Eastern Europe is also filled with Muddy terrain and they seem to enjoy using MBT. There's a design consideration for muddy terrain like Ground Pressure. So if Leopard 2RI gets stuck in Mud, then so will Harimau. i was read the kaplan mt specification and they can use Apfsds shell that can penetrated 530mm (more or less) at 2km, and is better than the 3bm42mango, but this tank mostly use Heat shell or HE fragmentation, or maybe HESH round because they use it only for infantry and some kind of it
the tank use a m1060cv shells that is able to penetrate armor up to 560mm and has a shell velocity over around 1620 m/s, and with a penetration of 560mm it will definetly penetrate the original m1 abrams frontal armor that has a protection of only 350mm against apfsds

Tank never ever can be obsolete, enough is to maintain properly, to work how is needed. When enemy use much more protected tanks then your tanks can be used to destroy other vehicles such aps, infantry groups, trucks...
You're right, The Concept of it will never be obsolete. *BUT* the tank design and doctrine *CAN* and it currently is obsolete due to the proliferation of cheap suicide drones and portable anti tank systems.
as of right now, with the current cost of ATGM (like the javelin, nlaw, and etc) significantly lower yet highly effective towards MBTs or MTs, MBTs and MBs are obsolete. This can also be proven by seeing the hundreds of Russian T-80s, T-90s and whatever T, destroyed by just a single round of ATGM used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, that cost significantly lower than the tanks themselves
@@90enemies There's some Russian sources on twitter that says the Ukraine invasion plan was copied almost entirely from Russia's other peacekeeping operation, so the Russian army wasn't preparing to fight another conventional military like its own. Coupled this with Russia's top-down command style, their lateness in hitting the brakes has been pretty costly. My point is we shouldn't conclude current MBT designs are obsolete without examining how much of the trashing was due to Russia's organizational incompetence. There's also another point about the BMP being geared towards enviromental protection (launching offensives amidst a nuclear wasteland) at the expense of armor and ergonomics. A fair amount of this may apply to Russia's MBT design.
@@zee9709 Probably yeah, we can see with how a lot of Nations are starting to invest in Light/Medium tanks (which are technically up-gunned IFV's) But we could be wrong if maybe a system like APS or laser makes tanks more protected from ATGM's in the future.

the main reason why we make Harimau tank because our country has forests and mountains, before we had Leopard tank but MBTs couldn't pass through forests and mountains, that's why we made this tank. maybe we only use MBT in urban areas.
I think this vehicle would be great for minor powers like Brazil and several African states, it would be a huge upgrade over their older vehicles without breaking the bank. The light tanks operated by the US, EU and China are made to compete with other light tanks belonging to each other which is why they're so heavy, expensive and overkill for the needs of minor power whose main interest is crushing insurgencies.
I can understand why Philippine choose Sabrah. When Philippine open tender for their tank, this Harimau still in development phase. And since it's not enter mass production phase, the price's too expensive. But i'm sure in the future, when this Harimau can prove it's power and ability, Philippine will choose this tank.

Really good video. I really enjoyed the description of the environment the medium tank would be suited for. I'm glad you through in the couple sentences about the armor being modular and able to be upgraded to a little more effective level if needed. I'm curious what type of munitions are available to the 105mm cannon though. The guided missile is interesting and probably the preferred weapon against other tanks if needed but whats being used against infantry or small structures?
105 mm was the standard Western MBT bore size until the Leopard 2 in the mid '70's moved it up to 120 mm. So there are all kinds of shells for it, including fragmentation HE, HE & HESH. High Explosive shells are excellent vs buildings, infantry & light vehicles. They're even good vs thin skinned armour, like APCs & Russian tanks.
yes, we have several option of armor here in Java. We have at least two type of armor, 1. Lembu Sekilan, 2. Tameng Waja. which one you could install on the vehicle depends on how many days the driver is fasting. and oh the place the driver is fasting as well, it can be a cave, a river, or a jungle. it would be even better if he does it at the river inside a cave, which is in a jungle. We have the tech for centuries, if not millenia.
@@WeaponDetective Founded doesn't means it get recognized by legitimate country. Declaring independence = 1945 Recognized by the Dutch = 1949 You said founded in your video, which means the moment they declared independence.
For correction, our country, Indonesia was founded (independent) in 1945, so not 1949. 17 August 1945 was proclaimed by the founder of the nation, Soekarno - - Hatta. But the Netherlands only recognized the Indonesian state in 1949. This was so that their military aggression in June 1947 & December 1949 was not referred to as military aggression against the territory of the independent Indonesian state. The Dutch wanted to re-colonize our nation after the end of World War II. but with all their might, the Indonesian people won in various battles against Dutch aggression, to maintain the independence of our country.

i think we need add the deployable atgm in Harimau for support if face with mbt or other, like in bradley, marder, bmp 1&2 atgm and not being like bmp 3 with no mbt support, maybe it can be a identical or mascot armored vehicle for Indonesia too inn the future, jut like bradley for US, marder for germany, bmp for russia
I still find the idea of this vehicle puzzling since -- unlike what you stated in the video -- the narrower tracks mean that the ground pressure is almost the same as that on the Leopard 2, giving the two essentially the same terrain-crossing capabilities. The lighter overall weight might make it easier to deploy, but (as other commenters have said) that makes the 105mm an odd choice since lighter autocannons or a 90mm low/medium-pressure gun would have been better for use against unarmoured insurgent and separatist threats. Another issue is that most Indonesians would probably object to the 1949 thing. 1949 is when the Dutch acknowledged Indonesian sovereignty, and if we want to stick to that standard then the USA only gained its independence in 1783 rather than 1776. So if the US gets to claim 1776 as the year of their independence, the Indonesians should get to claim 1945 too.

If anything both Indonesia and Japan share the same Hilly terrains and they're both Island nation. Japan knows their MBT is too heavy and expensive, so they developed Type 16 for faster deployment and cheaper cost.

@@aligenderuwo6471 I get what you're saying, but I'm not hinting that Indonesia should've striked a deal with Japan. What I was trying to say is, why not develop a Wheeled vehicle in the first place or expand on it, since clearly we have the experience with Anoa which is now turned into Badak Wheeled 6x6 armed with 90mm. And ignoring that, Japan isn't the only one with a Wheeled Tank Destroyer. Nation such as Italy (Centauro), French (AMX-10 and their latest EBRC Jaguar which would fit Indonesia perfectly), or South Africa (Rooikat). Countries which Indonesia already do buy weapons often from.
@@90enemies oh that, to put it simply it's for the development of future indigenous tank, this tank (harimau) would give Indonesia an experience point to make their own tank so that in the future they can improve it or maybe make their own tracked vehicle such as ifv like the bmp3, spg artillery, APC, mlrs or even an mbt. It's just the starting point, no, the basic to make tracked military vehicle, then test them in un (very likely), improved them from the feedback. Since the anoa is already developed and it's already proven in un peacekeeping mission they didn't need to make a new improved version again, it's adequate. But tracked vehicle however isn't like that, there are no indigenous tank, spg, spaag or anything like that so they need to make them for future reference, as for 35 ton weight, it's simple, since there's turkey who know how to make a tracked vehicle, they might as well put as many technologies in it as possible and learn as much as possible from them, hence why it's a light tank but with quite amount of armor with nearing the bridge weight limit (most bridge only support 40 ton), sure they're modernized their amx13 but improving and making on their own is different. Same goes to the failed project of kfx/ifx, they're for future references and I bet that after this they'll trying to create their own turret and cannon system as well as fcs considering they still giving more attention to it's army while a bit neglecting their navy and air force. Damn, I'm too sleepy to correct my grammar
@@aligenderuwo6471 Yes, I definitely agree that they're using this for future reference. Rather than going on a tangent I'll get to the point, I still don't get why it needs to be a tracked platform, because a wheeled chassis is many times cheaper to make. And a lot of Indonesian in the comment section are very hard headed on Weight and Mobility, when both description fits Wheeled Platforms more. And Anoa being a proven platform is more reason to improve it even further, maybe turn it into a 4x4 so it can mount larger hardware like a 105mm canon. Harimau isn't the first time we've used Cockerill made Cannon and Turret either. I really just don't get it. KFX makes sense for reference because we locally don't have a broad experience with Jet platform, let alone a stealth 5th gen. But I can't say the same when it comes to Armored Vehicle, which like you said for the past decades the army have been getting more attention than the Airforce or the Navy.
@@90enemies dunno, maybe the higher up knows something what we commoners don't and because of that it make sense for them to make a tracked vehicle instead of wheeled one, and yes embargo too, god knows when that happen so its just in case, also maybe they want to avoid the same mistake Iran made with their jets unable to get any spare part since they didn't make it locally. And there's also the matter of getting money, it's quite a nice tank and many people interested in it too, so maybe they make it so they can sold it into another country. And lastly the president want to develop the local weapon industry even further so this is probably one of their agenda even if it doesn't make sense.

Fyi phil govt got banned to procured belgian weapon as belgia gave santion over drug dealers massacre. Other problems are the light tank procurment must already mass produced and battle proven. Other than that harimau actually suitable with philipines environment also have NATO compatible datalink and BMS.
Beside using an 105mm gun, i think there is more potential that Harimau could be used as an IFV like the German KF41 Lynx, a turret with 30mm/35mm autocannon
There is a local industry which supplies 12.7mm RCWS for indonesian locally made APC named pindad anoa.. i think indonesian army already have plan to integrate this rcws to this medium tank but it depends on Indonesian ministry of defense permission

The reason it's called medium tank is because Indonesia has older service light tanks like the Scorpion and AMX-13 which weigh way less.
yea im agree with u,i thought their "medium tank" should be 125mm or above🗿

@@julfikaraldi4297 klo 155 mm??belum niat nembak lagi sudah turu🗿
(Which is better than still having them around to be impressed.)
On the other hand, based on armor thickness, and mobility one might also call it a light tank.
It's a very well balanced engineering solution specific to Indonesia's circumstances.

When the Indonesian Army (TNI AD) decided to procured the Leopard 2 MBT, I was among those who opposed it. Not because of ground sinking theory but because of the reason explained in the video.

I wonder what types of Apfsds ammo it uses and also what penetration can it go trough.
yes, we have several option of armor here in Java.
Indonesia was founded in 1945, 17th of August.
49 is the year it finally officially recognized internationally
We used the internationally recognized year of independence. We do not have any intention to offend the Indonesian people. If it is, we are sorry.
@@WeaponDetective Founded doesn't means it get recognized by legitimate country.
Declaring independence = 1945
Recognized by the Dutch = 1949
You said founded in your video, which means the moment they declared independence.
@@Aldnon if the admin says the indonesia got independence in 1945,the world community will mad bruh🗿
@@zzlhaiqal Tbh it doesn't matter much nowadays...
Indonesia was founded and became independent on August 17 1945,
not 1949
Iirc Philippines is also going to get these. I hope they'll name it Halimaw(Monster).
Hope Indonesia Will develop ifv class that fill gap in TNI inventory still lack in kind system'

Our narrator is a Turkish American.
i think we need add the deployable atgm in Harimau for support if face with mbt or other, like in bradley, marder, bmp 1&2 atgm and not being like bmp 3 with no mbt support, maybe it can be a identical or mascot armored vehicle for Indonesia too inn the future, jut like bradley for US, marder for germany, bmp for russia
I find it ridiculous for having a tank in Rainforest environment. They should spend more n airforce and APV 😅
@@muhammadriskyramadhan1725 Ancaman apa? Serangan negara asing? Justru tank ringan nggak terlalu banyak gunanya di perang terbuka lawan negara lain. Kaplan/Harimau ini badannya terlalu bongsor & lapis bajanya terlalu lemah kalo jadi sasaran senjata antitank. Mending beli MBT beneran sekalian.
@@LafayetteCCurtis ingat, kita negara kepulauan.
Looks great for small countries where heavier MBTs aren't really suitable.
Looks like a really solid and well thought out Vehicle. I'm no expert but adding maybe a 20mm auto cannon could possibly really help in its Counterinsurgency role. What you you guys think?💥
125mm gun is too big for light/medium tank
@@khan_3834 I disagree, first of the cannon is 105mm and the tank weight 30 ton. While the USA new MPF tank also use a 105mm cannon and weighs 38 ton.
@@khan_3834he says add some additional gun to the tank like the 20mm auto cannon not replacing it with 125mm smoothbore gun
nice INFORMATION:
I see a lot of people especially Indonesians in the comments being adamant about Mobility and Weight. Let me ask you, is 35 tonnes light? To me you people are just describing 6x6 Badak by PT Pindad with 90mm cannon and weighs 12-14 tons.
I'm still puzzled by Kaplan, especially on why it's not wheeled like Badak or the Japanese Type 16. If anything both Indonesia and Japan share the same Hilly terrains and they're both Island nation. Japan knows their MBT is too heavy and expensive, so they developed Type 16 for faster deployment and cheaper cost.
Because Japan for a very long time have laws that prohibited export of weapons. Rather than trying to talk to them and the proposal is unlikely to pass, they'd rather choose a nation that doesn't have such strict laws.
Nice video... thx

05:17 I PROTEST. 🇲🇨 Indonesia's independence was proclaimed IN 1945. NOT in 1949❗ We got our independence in 1945 from Japan (before Japan: Netherland, British, France, Portuguese, Mongols, tried to occupy us) and THIS was INTERNATIONALLY recognized by Egypt, Palestine, Suriah, Iraq, Afghanistan, Saudi, and so on!
And then we were attacked by the British with the Netherlands. Also politically, they were trying to divide us.
But finally we got rid of them.
So PLEASE, with all due respect, acknowledge this: 1945, not 1949❗ 🇲🇨
though we went with the sabrah due to integration of already in use Battle management system from israel i still consider this tank Sexy AF
Back then phil mindef actually got interested to harimau med tank, but the main problem was harimau use belgian cockerill turret. Fyi phil govt got banned to procured belgian weapon as belgia gave santion over drug dealers massacre. Other problems are the light tank procurment must already mass produced and battle proven. Other than that harimau actually suitable with philipines environment also have NATO compatible datalink and BMS.
Top bravo indonesia
Beside using an 105mm gun, i think there is more potential that Harimau could be used as an IFV like the German KF41 Lynx, a turret with 30mm/35mm autocannon

There is a local industry which supplies 12.7mm RCWS for indonesian locally made APC named pindad anoa.. i think indonesian army already have plan to integrate this rcws to this medium tank but it depends on Indonesian ministry of defense permission
well maybe it depend on what customer need it, is a modular tank after all, you can place so many system in that turret
