Primitive Pottery: Kiln Fired Cooking Pot

  • Опубликовано: 23 мар 2024
  • This adobe brick kiln works well to fire pottery. I recently made this large cooking pot from clay sourced in the pit next to my hut. I also made a flat cooking plate known in Mexico as a 'comal'.
    The process for firing this pottery is simple.
    1) I place some wood and kindling in the kiln.
    2) Then I light it with hot coals collected from the fireplace in my hut.
    3) I allow all the wood to burn down.
    4) Then I push the coals and ash away from the middle and place two bricks in the center of the kiln.
    5) I place the pot upside down on the bricks and lean the lid and the 'comal' against the pot.
    6) I stack dry branches of wood all around the pottery.
    7) The hot coals will slowly catch fire and soon all the wood will be engulfed in flames.
    8) The fire will burn for about 20 minutes.
    9) A few hours after the fire burns out the pottery can be removed from the kiln.

    It might have been a struggle to turn those shells into quicklime, but the spalling on that clay pot in the thumbnail and the end of your video suggests that the stable version of lime is in your clay already. The firing is probably causing some of it to turn to quicklime, which then causes spalling after reacting with moisture in the air. This further suggests your soil is probably already mildly alkaline.

    • @ChadZuberAdventures

    I love your primitive life videos, and I watch nearly all of them. Very relaxing and educational. I have a question about how you make your pottery food-safe, as I have often gathered, formed and fired clay myself, but a good primitive and self-sufficient glazing method eludes me.

    • @ChadZuberAdventures
      @ChadZuberAdventures  2 месяца назад

      I don't glaze my pottery. If you want to seal your pottery with natural ingredients there are several options to do that. Simply rubbing oil inside and out and then cooking a fatty and starchy meal in it will help seal it. You may have to repeat the process several times.

    It's too bad that the only low-fire glaze you could probably primitively make is lead oxide - if you substitute in bismuth oxide for health reasons and keep the rest the same it should still work well for you, though.
