So, I am a beginner to wearing a kilt and I just bought a one for a Ren. Fair this weekend, but im having problems adjusting my sporran chain that came with it. I did the things you guys suggested in the video and adjusting the chain by the links worked. Thank you for that because I would never have thought about that. But my question is this: Since I make chainmail/custom chains on my own, would it be easier if I just made my sporran chain?
And I love your guys content an it has been pushing me to look into my heritage a lot more, but thank you guys again

I got a chain belt on my sporran and all I had to do is trim off the last 3" of leather at the end. It fits perfect.

Thank you, Gentlemen! This novice is quite slim, and I now know to just use the chain- no leather necessary- fits perfectly just like that! Thanks!!

I prefer the sporran strap so that I do not have to worry about damage to the kilt from the chain snagging on it. I have seen a lot of cheap sporran chains that have edges on the links that can ruin a good kilt.

All the sporran belts I get seem to be too long . What I do is twist the large link between the chain and the leather strap to disconnect the chain and with side cutters cut the required chain links from the belt and then reattach and close the large link again . All that is needed is two needle nose pliers and a side cutter .... and the don't have to be great quality to work . BTW...you need two sets of pliers to grip both sides of the large link to open and close it . Also a leather punch will make a cleaner hole than a drill bit but both will work . Lastly Rocky and Eric , if you have read this far , I just received a full dress sporran chain and I think it is too long as well . What is the optimum distance from top of kilt to top of cantle for a full dress sporran . I don't want to muck about with the new chain until I am sure because it is one with flat ornate links and removing one each side is a big adjustment compared to chain links .

what about sporran suspenders used in lieu of a sporran belt or chain?

Undoing the links with pliers would be safer. I wouldn't recommend cutters without eye protection. Hobbyist woodworker here. My safety antenna just went off. Cheers!

My chain got too long after losing weight. So, belt or chain?

a chisel can easily pop a link to shorten a chain
