Abandoned & Forgotten Places
Documenting abandoned mines like never before!
Let's take abandoned mine exploring to the next level!
With your support you can help make this the best abandoned mine exploring channel on RUclips!
Shot entirely in 4K! ...so, turn up those video settings!
On this channel we go deep... REALLY DEEP into abandoned mines and tunnels all throughout the western United States. We researched some of the harder to find mines and hiked or 4x4 back into them to explore and reveal their hidden secrets. Many of these remote locations are filled with cool artifacts, antiques and unique geology that will have you guessing as to why the old prospectors worked so hard to find gold, silver, and other minerals.
A&FP moves just a bit slower as compared to other mine exploring channels. Gly discusses why the miners chose these sites and he points out the geology and minerals that got them excited. Veins of quartz filled with gold and silver made many men lose sleep in the 1800’s and early 1900’s and modern prospecting still does to this very day.
DANGERS? Oh yes, there’s allot of dangers associated with old mines. Un-exploded dynamite, blasting caps, bad air, bats, spiders, and snakes all find their home in abandoned mine shafts and tunnels. Oh, and let’s not forget rotting timbers, flooded passages and collapsing rock!
Gly takes abandoned mine exploring seriously with all the proper safety equipment, training, and experience necessary to do this activity as safe as possible but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a bit of fun along the way. “Gly”, your host and his band of crazy characters “Old Bob” (Gly’s Jeep), “Quackers” (Gly’s duck) and “Bobbie” (Gly’s hula girl) are sure to brighten your day with their comments and silly antics. Heck, they may even give you a chuckle or two.
Just like Saturday morning cartoons before the internet was invented, Abandoned and Forgotten Places uploads each Saturday at 7:00AM PST. (that’s 10:00AM for you eastern folks) so don’t forget to click that subscribe button and bell icon to receive notifications of new episodes!
Please LIKE, SHARE, SUBSCRIBE and COMMENT! All these things help grow our channel and your financial support helps us find new locations and helps put fuel into “Old Bobs” tank. Old Bob, thanks you!
Ok, now for the ugly stuff...

The carpenters who built all the framing, collars, etc were friggen amazing.
I bet they could build a cool log cabin.
True freaking craftsmanship
Trees must have been 10 a penny !
If they mined as well as their carpentry . They are Rich Men.
Even more WOWS than my last post ! WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW 🤩 The good Lord is taking care of you 🙏 David …from UK 🇬🇧
"And the angels did sing!" My first thought at this point was, 'Wow, that looks like a MINE!' It's what movies, cartoons, and video games have told me that mines *should* look like for my whole life.
Those miners were real artists!
Gly, one of the last scenes really touched my heart. You gave the Lord thanks for safe passage. So always remember faith will be rewarded. Be good and safe my mighty mine man! 🙏🏽
“Gly”: Just like the RUSH song…. I was Working Them Angels… overtime.
Lordy Lord! My palms are sweating watching this episode😳 I keep saying to myself.. no.. turn around…don’t go thru there!!! Thankful you made it thru safely… you’re loco for sure 🤪
“Gly”: As Mr M once said… he’s “touched”. Lol
Imagine you are out driving around in the middle of nowhere go for a little hike up in some hills and out of nowhere Gly comes crawling out of the rocks and rubble gasping, grunting and laughing screaming "Yess Yessss!!!"
“Gly”: Now THAT would be hilarious!
The excitement coming from him at 14 min is just what i think it is all about for him let alone at the end of the mine after her gets out...
You certainly didn't let us down with this episode.
Gly, congratulations on your continued success with your Channel. I’m an industrial electrician and wood worker for a hobbyist, I came across your channel during the pandemic and got hooked. I have a brother in law that’s a professor of geology that has taught at many universities around the country. I always wondered what his attraction was with years spent out in the southwest desert with his classes, until I started watching your channel. Now even I enjoy listening to you about the history and geology of the old mines. I also need to say your filming is next level production, great work!!!
“Gly”: Thank you very much, I’m happy you’re enjoying the channel!
I wanted to also thank you for sure great details of the mines , maybe at some time you could post stills of the grand places like this .
I know you will need to colormart them for no one takes them with your permission.
I would like to see your channel grow to at least 400 -500 thousand, you sure deserve it for the work you put into it .
Semper fi
I felt at times like I was looking over your shoulder. That got nail-biting as I have seen you turn back from potential collapse areas before. This time you took us through them with you. The amount of pressure on the timbering was highly intense. So happy you found the escape tunnel and you did not have to go back the way you came in. Fantastic photography!!
“Gly”: Thank you!
YES- Gly had gone too far to retrace his steps. As he mentioned feeling air flow, it seemed certain he'd be able to go one way only.
I wouldn't mind living in an old mine. That'd be the coolest place to live.
Great one Gly. From one big fella to another, you are living proof that it's possible to fit 25 gal head into a 10 gal hat in those tight spaces. Well done.
Epic was an understatement. The amount of weight on those beams was freaky. Amazing video Gly!
“Gly”: Thank you!
I can't believe the amount of wood used in the mine! Incredible amounts of compression. Amazing how the wood bends. Loved the camera techniques. Best of the best. Thanks for the adventure.
“Gly”: Thanks Jack!
All them nails, everywhere! I would have been skewered at every turn.
Jeepers Mr. Coolness. What an incredible find. You've reached a new level with this one. Literally. One can see the dangers of exploring the abandoned mines, but it's so hard to stop when things are so inviting.
It's insane how wood is preserved when it's kept in a cool dry place. That all looks weeks old if it were in a normal climate.
Gly, it feels like you are taking more and more risks. Please be safe, nothing down there worth dying for.
Gly was just being himself
“Gly”: When I find what I believe to be a good one I will push the envelope a little bit further.
@@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces Yea, I understand, but Im a diver so I both understand the feeling but also understand pushing the envelope. I love the channel, just that lately I think you have found a good one a bit more and more :)
The work and skill to complete all the woodwork in that mine is truly mind boggling! And the years it took, wow!
Can you imagine the time it took to get all that wood in there let alone do the construction. Best mine investigation yet
The blues and greens in the ore are beautiful, such a great explore, thanks for sharing it.
I am amazed at all the extra material and labor in a copper mine. They had to be getting something else too. My guess is that 50% of the timbering is to hold waste so they didn't need to haul it out. The wood was not snags and scrags, it was good wood and poles. (and I don't see any forests near by) SO it all was hauled in. Gly, your videos are so immersive that it makes all the others hard to watch. This one is truly rare. Thanks for the trip! Dean
“Gly”: The backfilled stopes allow for two things. 1. The backfill supports the hanging wall between levels so the stope doesn’t collapse and 2. It saves time and labor by not having to haul the waste rock outside. All of the wood you are seeing came from a mill and supply company west of Reno Nevada.
Thank you Gly for taking me places I'll never get to see for myself, and bringing it in such great detail!
“Gly”: Thanks Jim!
Yes, one of your best videos. AWESOME ?
Perception being everything. The more I watch you the more I realize. That the danger isn't always obvious to those who aren't familiar with mines and geology.
One wrong move in the wrong place and it's all over.
Wow. I am glad you got out safe and that you went back to this location for this week. It is good you did not have to retrace your steps. Stay safe.
What a super mine with super construction and engineering!
Except for 9.9/10 reading on the
Sketch-O-Meter..its very cool.
Thanks Gly!
So much nope for me! Was that a metric ton of rock or butt ton of rock smashing those beams?
14:23 To hear Gly speechless and giddy with excitement is worth watching again and again! We are all the lucky ones here😃
44:56 Reminds me of the jail break scene with John Goodman in the film “Raising Arizona” 🤣😂
@37:42
"Shush, be vewy, vewy quiet. We're hunting stopes and the way out!"
When you said “I feel like I’m stepping into a log cabin” it all hit me at once how well preserved and incredible that section was. To think of how deteriorated a log cabin would be from the same era…..so interesting to think about.
Holy crap Gly! These 49minuts felt like 20minutes, i am spechless, jawdropping exploring!
“Gly”: It was so good… it was over before you knew it. Lol. Thank you very much!
That woodwork is amazing, just think about what that would entail to do this….Lines of people handing up the wood in a huge line, heavy heavy pieces of wood going vertical, guys holding things in place while other guys hold wood where it needs to be. Just amazing to do that
IMHO, this was the most EPIC adventure you have shared so far! If it was not for the Genius skills of the carpenters who were involved in this mine's creation it would have been a total collapse many years ago. Thank you for risking life and limb to share with us the love and compassion for the craft that lasted all these years for such an endeavor to still be accomplished by you!
Holy cow Gly that was amazing them miners sure worked their butts off in that one. And seeing you so thrilled just like a kid walking into a candy store for the first time is priceless , Thank you for taking us along I love spending my day exploring with you can't wait for the next adventure but keep safe doing it 😘💕
I had Goosebumps the entire explore and I would have never believed where you would pop out at. you were not kidding about the extreme wood work and framing they did. Such a Great adventure and so much pressure pushing down and to the sides of the mine.
“Gly”: A magnificent discovery, I’m so happy I went up those ladders.
I think I'm going to call this one the Carpenter's Compression mine.
I've never actually had a mine stick in my head to the point I'd name it before today. This ties for number one right next to Thunder Ridge. They aren't comparable in any way other than both of them are mines. Thunder Ridge was just an incredible expanse of monstrous open opera house sized rooms beyond imagination. It was stable, to the point those rooms have stood for decades.
This mine however was tight, full of collapse ready pressure zones. But the wood work and craftsmanship was unmatched. The ore bodies were astonishing. Blues and greens and greys and whites, veins and flecks and rocks of color everywhere! It was in the backfill behind the lumber, littering the ground outside, used in gobbing, sprinkled in the back, and ribs of every passage way, like stars in a clear night sky.
I have to admit, this mine shares one other comparison with Thunder Ridge. It takes your breath away just the same watching it being explored.
Tied for number 1
Thunder Ridge and Carpenter's Compression.
You sir, are a master of your craft and I feel that had the worst happened while you were in this mine, you would have gone out in one of the best places, doing exactly what you loved.
On to the next episode to catch up!
You, sir, are a braver man than I. All of that splintered spaghetti timber is enough to give anyone the willies.
Wow, the amount od work put into this mine was unbelievable! Good camera work. 🇨🇦
“Gly”: Thanks!
That was an absolute journey through the mountain Gly. I'd say you will be one of the last humans to see those middle levels. If one of those sets gives way the entire fill will slip back down. Glad you made it out alive. Exceptional exploration
“Gly”: Thanks! Now it is preserved in digital history forever.
The moment I saw the two metal bars silhouetted across the opening, I thought "it's that half-buried track!" and knew with amazement that you had come out just feet from the portal you peeked into last week. So glad you made it out safely, Gly!
Superlative camera work and intense danger. Thank you.
The timberwork in this mine was phenomenal. Holy cow at the work that went into that alone, a lot of material was moved around in that mountain.
"That's enough for today..."
Ya think?!!!? 😂 You're right, this is your best exploration so far. It was fantastic and what a journey! Well done, Gly, well done indeed.
“Gly”: Thank you!
As Crush the Sea Tortoise said in Finding Nemo , “ DUDE , you got some serious thrill issues man “ 😆😉😎👍. Thanks for sharing this with us today Gly !! Glad you did this one & made it out alive . Those old miners were absolutely amazing at what they went through in the pursuit of riches .
“Gly”: Hey, I loved that movie! …and so did my kids. Through them I probably listened to it in the background 100 times. Yep, this one was a thrill, no doubt.
Putting this on the big TV with popcorn and treating this like the masterfully done film that it is. Thank you for my new favorite video of yours!
What an epic exploration that was! Very enjoyable, I felt like I was there. The work that went into not only the mining, but the actual assembly of all that wood was magnificent.
Brother love to see you enjoying yourself 💪🏾. Glad to see you’re safe !!
yes, that was incredible and incredibly scary. Wonder if the collapse occurred later after it was abandoned or they high tailed it out of there where you were exploring? The work and carpentry of those miners could had built a log cabin with ease. Thanks for an awesome tour of that mine. Stay safe.
Thank you so very much for being my guide to these places, which I've been drawn to all my life, but no longer have the health to explore myself! ❤
Summer Epication!!!!! 🎉
Yet, another great episode. This is why I have subscribed for years. Thanks, Gly.
“Gly”: Thank you!
What an adventure!! Thanks for taking us with!! "The Cathedral Mine" to me!
So pleased you took me a long with you Gly. Struth that was rewarding. Nice one Gly.
Hands down the best mine explorer on youtube. The camera work especially is second to none.
“Gly”: Thank you very much!
Excellent find Gly! Thanks for sharing!!
Those old beams and planks are sure showing the amount of pressure that has built up over the decades. The surprising part is, how few failures there have been!
At the price of copper, I am surprised they aren't mining for more!
Fantastic episode Gly. No wonder there was a lumber shortage, they carted it all down into this mine. That truly was an epic adventure. I don’t think I would’ve ventured under all those failing timbers, but it sure made for a over the top explore. Again, fantastic episode!!! Keep up the great work
“Gly”: Thank you!
An outstanding video! Thank you very much for taking us on a great journey. Please be careful in there.
I was here ducking my head so I wouldn't hit the ceiling columns.
What an amazing and scary place at the same time.
Congratulations Gly, it was a great find and it won't last for long as it seems to be about to collapse.
“Gly”: Thank you!
Spectacular! A view of history that won’t be around much longer! Thanks for taking us with you on this exceptional find!
“Gly”: Thank you!
Such an exciting adventure. You’re one brave guy to go into that danger zone! Glad you made it out safe, & enjoyed yourself. Great job.
As a kid, in South Wales, there we're plenty of abandoned mines, pit's and drifts, all types, muck tips a 1000 feet high. The entire valley hollow from mining coal. Looking down many pit shafts that we're open, so scary, you are amazing and brave, as all miners were, thanks, keep it up.
Such and AMAZING Find. GREAT GREAT GREAT VIDEO
Gly, I was just wondering when you saw daylight and you knock the mine with your head...and death. That was the most amazing woodwork I have ever seen!
“Gly”: It really was an incredible place and it won’t be around for much longer.
@@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces So glad you found it and went for the ladders...one good shake and it will be entombed forever. Well done, Gly!
The sneak peek in last week’s episode was awesome!! I already know this is going to be an phenomenal explore!!
My heart was in my throat the whole time! That was riveting. Glad you got out safe. Your enthusiasm is contagious.
Yup; you delivered.
I'm just always in awe over there being so much beauty and danger in nature at the same time. Makes you really stop and appreciate everything!! Awesome job of bringing all of it to us!! And when you finally came out of the mine I could actually feel the excitement with you! Thank you!
what amazing work these guys did and how well the wood is preserved
I can tell the rush of not dying in there was intense!
Awesome awesome video Gly, the tension and excitement you were giving off was palpable.
When you stuck your head out the top through the rail, I knew straight away where you were.
In that last level when you went to the end with the two trapdoors, you saw a tin and said that you thought it had a label but was just rusty, as you were editing did you spot that the piece of paper next to it was newspaper ??
You really deserve to hit that 200k subscriber mark purely for the workload you put in, you've come such leaps and bounds from those first videos when it was a walking stick and tennis ball and a gloved hand waving bye-bye at the end
“Gly”: Thanks Tom! No, I didn’t see the paper. This mine dates back to WWI and in an upcoming episode I found more evidence of that. It’s been really awesome to see how the channel has evolved over the years into what you see today. In the beginning, I didn’t even know how to edit but I knew if I worked really hard I could eventually produce content that I myself would want to watch. But it doesn’t end here, I’ll always keep trying new things and honing in my skills with each and every episode.
@@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces Back in the days when you would walk in the portal, pull the string so the banner would unfurl...how many tries did that take, yes been watching since then and it's been a journey, looking forward to following you along it even further....top man.
Super cool explore! You have come such a long ways from your first videos, keep it up. You definitely earned a cold one on this explore.
“Gly”: And thanks to you guys and your channel donations you all helped make this possible. Thank you!
@@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces your welcome Gly ! It’s only because of your content that I support such an outstanding project.😊⭐️🌟
Hi gly, That was the best ever exploration I have ever seen. Absolutely fantastic. Many thanks for the experience
“Gly”: Thank you very much!
This was indeed everything you hinted at and a whole lot more! I cannot believe how immense that mine is and how very scary those bent wooden beams are holding up all those thousands of pounds of rock. Who knew that wood could actually bend that way? I was nervous the entire time when you'd slip into tight spaces all the while saying how dangerous it is, especially when you'd say all it would take is an earthquake at the wrong time. I hate to think of you being there when it can happen at any time. Please continue to stay safe, no matter how much fun you have doing it.
Found you about a month ago and can't get enough. So far this mine was the best I've ever seen. It was a nail bitting mine for sure. Please don't dissappear on us.
The writing that said G S Madera , Ca. It is a town in central California.
First off... Congratulations on making it out of there alive. I've seen you go into dangerous territory before. But, oh my Lord. This one takes the cake! 😮
Gly, I about soiled myself SEVERAL TIMES!! Please 🙏 🙏 don't risk your life do much.We care about you,Gly.
This guy is outta his mine
There's a reason women live longer than men....
Yet, another great episode Gly! I wonder if the miners made any money after paying for all that lumber.😀
It's awesome to see you so excited Gly!! Great work, as always!! I can tell you put just as much work into production as you do actually exploring. Thank you!!
Man I was praying as you were going through there that them timbers would hold. Your brave. I couldn't believe the amount of wood in there.
What a mine, glad you see you survived that sketchy mess!
If you were a cat I would say you used up one of your nine right there.
I found myself ducking my head along with you and gritting my teeth through those rough spots. Thank you for being able to go through these mines for me so I don't have to! I will happily stay safe and live vicariously through you. :) Here's to many more ahead of you! I love the work you put into these videos and having edited my husbands snowboarding vids and our family vaca vids, I appreciate the time it takes to edit and put them together.
“Gly”: Thank you very much!
That really was so over the top!! Crazy the amount of compression on those Stohls to bend them they way they did!
Thank you so much for sharing this one before it collapses shut forever :)
“Gly”: Thank you very much!
QQQ- Gly, are you making maps of the mines based on your explorations? I know that the existing documentation is not accurate based on your previous findings of the mines you have visited. Historically, it could be of great value. This mine was truly awesome. The woodworking in this mine was second to none. I can understand why you were so excited. Thanks for the effort in providing us with such videos.
Sweet mother of pearl ! Best preserved wood I've EVER SEEN ! Our NW mines are wet and rotten!
Cream always rises to the top gly , a fantastic mix of madness, fear, skill and determination produced your best work to date and you have entered the hall of fame for mine explorers for sure , thank you for sharing that with us
“Gly”: Thank you very much Robin!
It’s fun to hear Gly geeking out!
“Gly”: It’s called “Gly in the raw”. Lol
Thanks for the wonderful entertainment. Keep them coming. If you run out of mines consider exploring abandoned buildings.
Just like real mining, some weeks you hit short videos with small mines, and some weeks you hit solid gold like this one. Great stuff!
“Gly”: That’s what abandoned mine exploration is like. If I only showed the really good ones I would only be able to produce maybe six videos a year if I’m lucky.
Amazing episode Gly! That was quite the journey through the mountain, beautiful colours, miners graffiti and timbering. Great filming and editing too! Thanks for bringing us all along. 🔦⚒️
Incredible filming and editing of this trek into the past. As others have said, I’d love to know how these miners constructed the fixtures in that mine and where did all that wood come from. I couldn’t fathom working day in and day out in that sort of environment. Well done Gly. 😁👏🇦🇺
“Gly”: Thank you!
YES! I heard and felt your joy and nervous laughterr! Very Top Shelf Production! Congratulations on your 2023 Premier! THANKS.
“Gly”: Thank you!
No it's Thank you! It was a genuine pleasure! The amazing talent of Camera Operation, Production, and Direction has elevated your show! Again thx and see ya next time in the wastelands.
@7:43. -HoLyMAcaRoni!!
That was so awesome, I'm going to watch it again! Great explore, Gly 😎👍
Gly, been watching you a few years now and this was just epic. It got me thinking about the crew that built it, and I was thinking some of the old timers who were mining in the 40’s could still be around, but maybe not much longer. Ever thought of finding someone and interviewing them for the channel? Might be fun to hear some stories.
ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE !!!!!
He had the giggles love it.
I would rather be locked in a room full of griz bears than walk around inside that death trap! Lol...Much respect Gly and thank ya for this over the top, Awesome video! Prayers to ya!
“Gly”: ….wearing pork chop underpants. Lol
Hahaaaa...Does Calvin Klein make them in that flavor?
WOW ! That was a home run Gly. I smashed that like button buddy.
Those miners that did the timbering had some talent. Stay safe.
“Gly”: Thank you!
How fortunate it is those miners timbered it up so well. For all the dread of having the mountain hanging on splintered timbers, if one of them had been less thorough we wouldn't have gotten to see such a fantastic mine before time and a good jolt finally finishes the job and seals it for good. You've done your part cataloguing something on the verge of beintg lost.
You, Sir, have outdone your high levels of excellence with this video.
