It is a very rare video showing an actual user that wanted more performance from his ipad and did modifications for it,
Great video.
I'm not even an artist, but just watching this was really dope. You have so much ingenuity and creativity! I love this! This legit could be a product category of its own!
Sick af. Even the computer influencers on youtube barely modify their ipads like you do... so this is awesome to see!
Well because they do not need to. If they need a computer they use a computer, they don't try to mod an IPad to mimic it 😂
So which anime are you guys watching right now? Just caught up to Demon Slayer this afternoon but Kaiju No. 8 was pretty awesome yesterday.
re-watching Dragonball Z and SAO, old but gold i´d say.
I am rewatching Mononoke (Not Princess Mononoke) again because I heard it's getting a movie.
One piiiieeece
Currently reading "The Primal Hunter." It's starts off pretty strong imo, but its... eh
Jellyfish cant swim in the night is a good wholesome show about artists starting out as a virtual idol, hits home if you love drawing
Edit: apparently theres a bit of yuri in it, but I didn't realize until later episodes 😂😂
This has absolute mad man energy, like leaving someone alone with coconuts and you come back months later and they’ve built a computer with it. Love it
haha thanks man. What can I say? I'm something of a [engineer] myself xD.
I love your setup man; especially your creative use of magnets for mounting your phone and keyboard. Honestly you found solutions to issues I’ve always encountered but never thought about even trying to figure out how to improve. Genius
You know, you could have simplified your set up by first finding the thermal hotspot of the iPad. After locating it, buy and attach magnetic phone coolers sold by those gaming phones or from razer’s phone cooler chroma. Reviews show that those thing works really really well and could probably cooled your device more. Basically, you over engineered your set up.
I can completely understand why you did this. This is the kind of thing I've cooked up in my mind but not ever actually tried. I have a terrible time using my ipad pro when it gets hot, which it does whenever I'm writing/drawing. Thanks for the inspiration to see this kind of idea in action!
I admire the dedication with the mod of the Ipad, but there are multiple options doing this and not destroying the original back case :D
When you told me on stream to check out your new Sketchboard setup, I was expecting keyboards and cosmetics. This is nuts bro! (in a good way)
Glad you like it!
This is such a good tour, so clean 😊😊
Thank you!! 😊
Great video. You're the king of the setup!
Awesome Setup! Love to see how you solve problems and find a Solution fitting ur own needs.
I think the only thing that i prob will "steal" is the magnet on the left side so i can put my Phone on there. I have the Sketchboard Pro and i think thats a nice "addon".
Thx for the detailed Video!
I’m not an incredibly handy person-I feel like if I were to do anything remotely close to what you’ve done I’d end up creating a mess and ruining something expensive-but those moonlander keyboards look INCREDIBLY useful. I might get a set of those.
been waiting for this videos since you wrote you would show it!!
And here i thought i was being crafty by connecting my sketchslate and sketchboard pro to a Vesa adaptor and arm, this is next level some good idea’s i might… borrow.
More detail on the vesa please
You are crafty! haha
Having the artistic skills of a sloth means I will never have a use case for this setup, but damn man, that was amazing. Love the ingenuity! I absolutely adore setups that put ergonomics front and centre, and I took particular pleasure from how clean it looks from a cable management perspective. Great stuff!
Is it necessary to paste the copper block over the iPad? I mean, I imagine a kind of base with the copper in the middle and you just put the ipad and both make contact without being glued. Don't you think? Btw, would be nice to see a thermal test to see the heat improvements...
I'm using iPad with badic cooling pad for laptops and without any metal block glued to iPad, it works good, too. The only things is 1) the fan is really loud, 2) there is no tilting system and supporting for the iPad, so I can't have the angle I need for drawing. I haven't tested it with charging and Procreate at the same time, believe that it would be kinda hot...
*basic instead of "badic"
I mean conceptually a glued heatsink is gonna have more solid surface contact, and thus better heat transfer, than just physical contact (eg why installing heatsinks on CPUs involves thermal paste), but idk how much that difference matters practically in this case lol. I'd imagine DIY glued heatsink would be more practical than DIY integration of heatsink into stand though.
I was going to, but who knew decent thermal temp guns were so insanely expensive...
Absolute genius. Someone should license it from you and manufacture it and sell it so people can buy it.
I loved this! Your iPad setup tour is AWESOME! The way you explain each piece along with a recommendation for round 2 is sincerely appreciated!
I’m looking forward to learning more about your process ❤
Even if I squirm when I see the heatsink application method, it’s brilliant…
my god, you turn the ipad into a gizmo!! cool!
JRE would be proud. This is intense!
This is such a cool setup!!!
Maybe you can use an AIO to cool down the iPad even better, I will be working on that modification to see how it goes
i guess that's why a lot of coolers use a copper contact point and aluminum everything else huh
This was so well thought out.
You remind me a bit of myself. I worked as a techie for 18 years doing some art here and there. However, now I'm trying it out as a full time artist. (still help my husband with his full time biz though) I used to try and modify stuff even far back as grade school when my father and I made a tornado demonstration machine with a hot plat and a wooden box with plexiglass.
It's a good combo of skills aint it! Thats really cool.
@@ergojosh ❣
Hey Josh,
Your work inspires me. Thank you for your videos. I have a question: you are using the Moonlander keyboard with the iPad, as I saw in your videos. I mostly do 3D work and am considering switching to an iPad because I am constantly on the go. Can you connect the Moonlander directly to the iPad, or do you have to use a Mac with it?
No one thought of this. Insanely unique dude!
lol this is so chaotic. I thought the thermal performance of the M chips was a lot better crazy you need to do all these mods
Once you get a M4 iPad Pro you should water cool it.
😂
holy crap you used thermal glue to *permanently* adhere a massive heatsink to your ipad?
now that's dedication...
personally I'd probably recommend doing a reversible mod with thermal paste and some mount to anyone that wants to do something similar ^^'
Yeah same here. I used thermal pads at first but the heatsink would fall off within 24 hours every single time, even with support. :/ I couldn't find a good reliable way to secure it to the back.
1:10 Idea to honor warranty and resell/ trade-credit:
-- Re-use or buy or make a heat-resistant frame or a case whose back can hold the iPad.
-- Make sure case backing sits in drawing board without blocking ports etc, Front of case not needed.
-- Measure the heat sink.
-- On that case back, mark up area where the sink will sit.
-- Draw the rectangle on that back.
-- Within the area, draw line diagonally from each upper corner to the opposite lower corner of the rectangle.
-- cut the diagonals neatly, not beyond the outline.
-- Depending on the case material, bend the resulting triangles back and over where the heat sink will sit.
-- Set the heat sink so that it will sit flush to back of case and the iPad.
-- If the triangles can be bent over the sink, mark that.
QUESTION: Is there a material in sheet form which can serve as a thermal transfer when it is between the back of iPad and that case? If so without glue, and fully the dimension of the iPad-- if such a material exists, it will sit behind the iPad and the case back.
-- Meanwhile glue the triangle shapes onto the sink. Be mindful to keep heat sink flush to where ipad will meet it in the case's back.
Materials:
Woven or flat sheets of copper or aluminum, non oxidizing?
Heavy duty aluminum foil doubled?
Question: On the back of the iPad are there AREAS which get HOTTER?
-- On the M4, Apple made its logo of copper. Inside they added some other material to offset heat from items on the circuit boards. On the M2 where?
If anyone wants to try the copper bar cooling trick without permanently damaging their iPad, look into thermal pads.
Great idea, Josh! My one concern with mixing Copper and Aluminum is due to dissimilar metals (Galvanic Action), which could cause corrosion. Copper has an Anodic value of 35V, while Aluminum has an Anodic value of 75V ... so a difference of 40. This may be OK in a "controlled environment" (temperature and humidity). Using Aluminum would avoid this issue as the metals would be similar. The fan adds "forced convection", which obviously will help with heat dissipation.
Dang...aghhh I tried to research this but never came across that term. Thanks for the info!
Amazing! This is an insane and creative DIY setup!
If you can take mac os and bring it onto ipad that would be sweet
For stuff like this, I’ve actually been using my 3d printer for mods to my original sketch board for similar performance, minus the aluminum heat sink though 🤣
There are also mobile heatsinks that work with a Peltier cell
some are magnetic too
Even so, I don't know which of those two keeps the iPad colder.
18:12 After learning here use of heatsink, i see the aluminum case on the dock as a sink letting dock run cooler.
Do a review on the moonlander
this feels like I'm watching future version of me still tinker with my own stuff for whatever purpose I think of...
i see a big fan of the noctua fan
This was fascinating love simple modding
I don’t know if you’ve ever done it but I’d be interested to see your routine in the gym
I'm stealing that heat sink idea for my Kamvas Pro 16. During use it uses my hand as a heat sink and stays cool, but during idle it just builds heat. I have CAD software and access to a 3D printer. Time to fabri-cobble a solution.
Good luck!
Interesting I’ve never had heating problems with my iPad Pro I have the M1 or whichever version is (2021)
Hey how is the material on the white Sketchboard Pro 2? do it get fast dirty what would you reccomend black or white?
Did the heatsink NEED to be glued to the iPad? Couldn't you just device a station that rests the ipad atop the heatsink? Like build it into the stand, not attach it to the ipad.
maybe another use? use aluminum heatsink as a base to sit devices on when charging. 10:24
isn't the implication of mag-safe that it's usually unsafe to have your phone near magnets like that lol
It is so terrible with the heat on ipad pro 13 . For me only when painting. Don't understand why there is so less to hear about it. Hopefully an update will fix it and it's not a design fault
Never had any problems with my old one from the 2nd generation. I would have liked to try the copper thing if it wasn't permanent and the warranty was void
I would like to see you draw on a samsung tab s 9 ultra
Awesome video. I do lots of modifications to my gear as well. I have my sketchboard 1 cut and glued and beaten to death with my personal mods. I just want to suggest that you get into 3d printing (If you haven't already) to design your own utilities and mods that'll help you do these kind of changes in a cleaner ways. You'll start thinking of more ways to make the setup suit you better.
On a saparate note: I bought a phone holder (basically a net) from Aliexpress, and glued it to the sketchboard back and use it to store my art glove there.
3d printing is the only thing keeping this from being perfect!
Man you should link with a product developer and make one for people to buy
Right? I basically just gave out the blueprint for free... :{
Guys, HELP.
In france the m2 iPad air and the m2 ipad pro cost the same. Is the squeeze feature important enough to ignore the Pro over the air? I love 120hz and high contrast screens but the pencil pro is so good
Wish I knew tbh. Good luck
If you’re not an artist, and you don’t mind having less support over the life of the device, an M2 iPad Pro may suit you better.
AWESOME Video Josh!..
Interesting you choose to blow the air into the heatsink and ipad instead of the usual way of pulling the hot air away from the heatsink which how it is always done with cooling processors.
I own a Tour Box remote, there's no way that connects with an iPad as of yet.
Finally Josh! 😭❤️🔥
iPad pro amazing device, but maybe I'm only one who's disappointed in it as a drawing device. His screen is so hot.I am currently using xp pen 16 gen 2 and for me it is many times better than the ipad pro as the main device for drawing.
I think I started watching ergo's videos for figure drawing reference, way back in 2018 or so. I guess it was always a tech channel though? The amount of gadgets in their setups is ostentatious, like it looks like a parody at this point? There are 50 products in frame 💀
Damn, cool set Josh.I haven't had any time to keep up with new anime 😢 I really need to get back to it and see what's new
Does it really improve performance in procreate? I work in procreate and the ipad is barely warm with no lags or performance issues. Why would you need this Josh?
Less crashes, but more importantly it's about the screen recordings I will do. I often will record nearly 5 hours a day, which increases heat. Without the cooling, the recordings fail or get semi-corrupted at times. It's also been hot as hell where I live.
This absolutely has no significance to me, but it was very interesting to watch. Very cool upgrades you did. 😁
Impressive !
Why did you choose to use thermal glue instead of thermal paste or even pads? It is possible to attach corner clips on the back of the iPad to make it easier to remove or replace the heatsink over time. The only real drawback is that every few years you may need to service / replace the thermal pads / paste.
The heatsink will simply fall off, and I couldn't fire out a clip solution that worked with the stands reliably :(
You can take the man out of an engineering major but you can’t take the engineering major out of the man
That’s wild crazy. But I love it.
All of this make sense but WHEW 😂 that seem like a lot
great setup
We have the same ipad 😂 but mine is not modified like yours haha
Putting a heat sink on an ipad is an insane choice lol Wow.
Linus would be proud
This is so sick oh my gosh 😭😭❤️
With the Moonlander keyboard … does it have software that allows you to program macOS/iPadOS specific keys? specifically the globe key so you can use all of its shortcuts.
You use a website that creates a file that you flash onto your keyboard! So yes you can program macOS specific keys.
This is AMAZING
Instead of using thermal glue, what about regular thermal paste? One time when I was disassembling one of my PCs I had to get the heatsink off of the motherboard. No matter how much I wiggled it or pulled it wouldn't come loose! Finally, pulling one more time, I ended up pulling the CPU out of it's socket still stuck to the heatsink! So, uh yeah, I have a feeling thermal paste might be good enough 😀
As for the bookend stand things, maybe you could just attach them to the Sketchboard Pro. That way you wouldn't have to readjust them all the time.
Good idea for the bookends! As for the paste, I dont think it would work because it simply doesnt adhere like the glue. I believe the only reason your cpu was stuck was because of the insane clamping pressure of your typical cooling solution and the fact that your cpu will get MUCH hotter than the back of any iPad. That and it was probably clamped there for months and had plenty of time to adhere. It wouldn’t have hurt to try before the glue though…
I used thermal pads at first and while they stuck…in about 2 days the heatsink would fall off. Every time. I believed it was due to the cooling and lack of constant pressure.
@@ergojosh That's a good point, I forgot just how tightly that heatsink is squished against it. I guess another thing to try is putting a thin sheet of aluminum over that hole in the artboard pro and just glue the heatsink to that. Then you could just use thermal paste between it and the ipad. Would be messy removing it though. But I imagine your ipad never leaves the house 😅
@ergojosh you don't draw on your beatuiful large Wacom cintiq anymore? Why do you prefer the iPad instead of the large tablet with more real estate to draw in? Don't tell me is because is not mobile since you're still at a desk? Just curious to know, is all?
I no longer own it! I prefer the iPad because I am sensitive to the high response time and superior display quality. The only reason I would use a bigger screen is to have more stuff off to the side, the size of the iPad is plenty large. HOWEVER...I would still immediately get a 16" iPad if it existed.
Haha this is so amusing and neat
Y not those magnetic cooling fans for ipads that are on Amazon?
Now question. I have a similar set up I have an m1 Mac Mini and I’m using it with my 2tb iPad Pro. For longevitiy, whenever i stream from my ipad and i have it connected to the Mac via thunderbolt, i can never seem to get it to charge decently, do you have a workaround for that?
hmmm mine never goes below 100%. I do have my mac connected to its full 140 watt charger AND 2 other sources of power so that could be it. (my studio display and my dock - which my ipad is plugged into) I recommend using an OWC dock. It works.
Someone hasn’t yet completely purged themselves of their architectural tendencies methinks!
I know you said I shouldn’t do it…. But imma do it
Precisely why I bought a Misinform V3 instead.
Looks great, thank you for showing this to us! I plan to do something similar, but with wood or chipboard, now currently in search for the dynamic legs or some kind of system for it. Thank you for the inspiration and hint about aluminium/copper plate!
One more question, is your elbow of working hand hurting because of no support from the tilted surface?
Oh, I see the elbow supporting systems!! I never thought that this is even a thing 😳 Thank you a lot, you're just opened the whole world to me, lol
What is this elbow supporting thing? Can I ask you for the name of it, please?.. 👉👈
Battle station
Ever thought to try a phone cooler, its quite in common and in trend and quite cheap i would say ?
Next time!
ergo tech tips
This incredible 😟😟😟💗
why are you doing this Josh, just why
I ask myself every other night lol
What's the benefit of the sketch board pro 2 compared to 1 for you? It's a smaller board and you don't seem to use the magnetic legs so I'm curious
It fits my iPad a bit better, its lighter, and the cable hole is much larger. I had to carve out some of the plastic of the original. Its also a bit smaller without compromising on extra surface to rest my hands.
@@ergojosh o that’s good to hear then thanks for the response !
at this point just buy a highend apple computer with proper wacom tablet...
I thought i was the only artist who loves tinkering
all this and u still not buying the more powerful iPad?
Careful AI might turn your Ipad into a drone! ✌
😊
🤣🤣🤣🤣
