Congrats on being one of the best at what you do. If I may ask, did you use a picture as a starting point for the visuals or did you draw it in PS? Villeneuve and his team has given a whole new feeling to the Dune franchise simply by adding one, relatively short scene to the movie. is that a cultural milestone, or what?
I haven't read the books, but after having watched the movie, I am a convert. My local book store is sold out, deservingly so, but once in stock again, I'm buying it.

@@fix923 Not this kind of throatsinging, it scandinavian throat singing is more akin to bass chanting. Also its historicity is very debatable, there is a high probability it only stems from neopagan movements of the twentieth century who inspired themselves from the mongols because their aesthetic was centered around an idea of getting back to ancestral brutal roots. Other types of throat singing include turkic throat singing which is less deep and more cutting, mostly practiced in the steppes near Mongolia in the Altaï region. There is also Inuit throat singing which is more guttural but sounds more like a whistle and tibetan throat singing which is deeper than Mongolian one and only used for rythmic chanting, not regular singing. I never heard anything about finno-ugrian throat singing but it may be a possibility since they are also a siberian people.
@@LordBackuro We do not of course have any recordings of hunnic throat singing (Attila's intro doesn't count XD), and I am not aware of any historical source mentionning it. Remember that roman or persian historians didn't know what throat-singing was for the most part. Some late roman historians were former soldiers though, they could have given some hints (Jordanes for example). Since the eastern Xiong-Nu as well as the Hephtalites and the European Huns were deeply tied to the ancestry of modern turkic and mongolic peoples there is nevertheless a high possibility of them practicing throat-singing. The same is true for many other related steppe confederations. I think chinese sources directly reference that the "northern barbarians" were singing in a particular way in very early accounts, so that nearly confirms that people like the Xiong-Nu (the main hunnic confederation) were throat-singers.
"The Emperor will's it. It will be done." Yet another fantastic ambient music video, not all throat chanting like in the movie. But the dark undertones are there with that hint of the ruthless roughness in the beginning.
When I discovered DUNE (the first movie) and the novel, I imagined them as < techno-barbarians > such as the bikers in Mad Max, with elements from the Roman legionaries, and sci-fi stuff. I must say Villeneuve's interpretation of the Sardaukars gave me a very good impression.
@@Rek-55 In the Dune novels of Frank Herbert is mentioned that the elite military force of the Emperor are named Sardaukar. They are raised and trained on Salusa Secundus - a planet known for it's hostile conditions. It's so terrible there that you get automatically the most resilient and brutal fighters because only those survive on Selusa Secundus.
The Movie (and this soundtrack) got across a feeling to the Sardaukar that not even the books really succeeded in getting across (but still very much intendedd). They actually feel like a powerful and ancient military order.
I've seen my share of obscure movies. I became quite unfazed. But whoever figure out and created that 2 minutes scene with the Sardaukar chant, the sound, the ambiance, must have a pretty messed up imagination. The mood of the audience in the theatre changed immediately.
Well the Sardaukar like the Fremen are a cult. They revere Shaddam VI as their god king so it's no surprise that they went in that direction aesthetically speaking.
Everytime I read Dune I always pictured a scene almost identical to the movie. Throat singing seemed to fit them so well. The Mongolian aesthetic is quite fitting. They likely share some Zensunni heritage so no wonder they're such skilled fighters.
Sardaukar and Fremen have very similar cultures, it is just that the Fremen have magic dirt and a wizard on their side. Hard to win when the other side is juicing on magic dirt AND has a cosmic wizard.

This music really hammers home the fact that Salusa Secundus is a hellhole ... a perfect training ground for the Sardaukar. My sincere compliments. This piece could also easily fit into H.P. Lovecraft's lore.
Guess what? No you absolutely dont. in the novels, selusa secundas is was originally a nuclear wasteland practically that was studied by Pardot Kynes, the father of the Kynes we see in Dune.

It really is crazy how we all saw this coming... that Dune would be a hallmark of epics to come... and yet I did not expect what I saw....I've now seen it 5-6 times and can definitively say its my favorite adaptation of Frank Herbert's book. The short but immensely moving scene on Salusa Secundus featuring Pieter and the Sardaukar Battalions raised to hoodwink the Atreides actually keeps playing over and over in my head, the droning throat-singing just absolutely rocking my shit daily basically. Dreams are messages from the deep. This video and the others you made as well as how many people are now talking about Dune decades after any significant mention of it are a testament to how powerful Dune really is, I guess.
Per Herbert's book, the Sardaukar were to be disguised as Harkonnen troops in the attack on the Atreides on Dune. In the 2021 version, they aren't disguised at all and attack in their Sardaukar battle gear. It defeated the purpose of the Emperor hiding his involvement in the overthrow of the Atreides -- something that he wished to hide from the Landsraad.
Yes, you make a good point. However, the key thing here is that in this film, Villeneuve rationalizes why the Sardaukar would be just dressed like they are because they are killing anyone who sees them. IDK they could have gone into how the Sardaukar were disguised but don't you think that would have defeated the purpose of them in the film-- at least in terms of recognizability? Amazing work. It reminds me a lot of Blade Runner 2047, which is funny enough another Villeneuve movie scored by Hans Zimmer haha. Especially the scenes where the protagonist flies to the Wallace Corp headquarters. Its also full of dark ambiance and features throat singing. (Titled: Wallace in the OST)
Absolutely stunning as an ambient soundscape. And with the preconceptions I have about Salusa Secundus, as soon as I heard the rainfall effect my brain started yelling "Hard rain! Hard rain! Get inside!" and I almost expected to hear the chattering of a Geiger counter. Also, great choice on the vocals for this one. I shall definitely listen to it as an ambient track on my merchanting adventures at LARP events.

Okay, your music is phenomenal as always. But, the visuals are spectacular as well (not that they weren't before). I can tell how much time and effort you put into it and I really appreciate that. The more I look at it, the more I discover and get lost in the little details. And, with the music, the whole experience is incredibly immersive.

Throat singing isn't exlusive to Mongolian culture. Its widely used in a lot of indigenous European pre-christian cultures.
Fremen are descendants of ancient Zensunni who left Earth thousands of years ago.

Okay, your music is phenomenal as always. But, the visuals are spectacular as well (not that they weren't before). I can tell how much time and effort you put into it and I really appreciate that. The more I look at it, the more I discover and get lost in the little details. And, with the music, the whole experience is incredibly immersive.
