"Because he's a pro, I thought he would defend that at least one time." - BoxeR "Because he's a man, I thought he wouldn't do that all three times." - YellOw - From their later interviews about this match. Two players were quite close before that as far as I know, and they're friends now, but this match was a great shock not just to YellOw, but to all. Before 2004, most Korean viewers and pro-players shared the same thought: "If you're pro, achieving victory is not enough. You should win artistically and skillfully." But after this, everyone became to agree that achieving victory IS enough. In short, it would be safe to say that this match dropped the curtain of the era of romantic amateurism in Korean e-sports.
_"*November 12th* is a day I've erased from my life." Jinho (Yellow)_ _"Thought he'd at least manage to fend it off at least once." Yohwan (Boxer)_ Yellow actually started descending into a long slump straight after this. Everyone, even the players, expected a long, epic matches that will be told years down, but Boxer... won with the same tactic 3 times in a row. Fans scathingly criticized Boxer for ruining such an opportunity to give them a good show, (Korean fans were like, "didn't even get to finish my boxes of fried chicken and beer, it's over already?"), and in the beginning ppl sympathized with Yellow, but later ppl started to criticize him for losing to the same tactic 3 times in a row. But to be fair, for many professional gamers, giving a good show should be secondary to winning. *Cheese tactics, classic strategies... they need to use all they can to stay unreadable and keep their edge.* This is their way of staying loyal to their fans, by giving it their all.
Game 1 Yellow: "Oh he bunker rushed me, he won't do it again" Game 2 Yellow: "Oh he bunker rushed me again, he can't possibly do it again" Game 3 Yellow: -_-
Those who think Yellow is noob don't understand the level of thought that is going on. It is like scissors paper stone. Two games down, boxer have been using the same move twice, not to mention winning this quickly will probably piss off producers and fans alike, it is logical that Yellow will believe that Boxer will try a different move that is why he did not counter the bunker attack. In a variety gameshow, ''the genius'' he competed with top contestants such as poker champion, mensa member, Harvard student, top politician, newscasters in a survivor format intellectual games competition and he emerged the champion.
Alan Mathew -spoilers- but beaten by Eun Jiwon's stupid all-in move right at the beginning of their deathmatch where the results were determined by pure luck.*
it was horrible ; A ; Jinho vs Sangmin would have been a lot more epic than Yohwan. Honestly, Yohwan... I don't even know what to say about him, he was never really to my liking, just my opinion but... he was always sort of cocky in the main matches and never really did any of his alliances any good whenever he "helped" them with his "plans"
It's not like Boxer planned it like this, so it isn't much of a psychological thing, more a calculated risk. If boxer's scout went a different route, he couldn't have rushed. The only reason, Boxer could rush there was, that his scout went in the right direction, found Yellow's base first thing and spotted the fact, Yellow hadn't even started his spawning pool yet and instead chose to rush his hatchery. Upon discovering the lack of a spawning pool, Boxer immediately started his rush, as he knew, he had it. One could argue, Yellow should have played it safe, gone for spawning pool first and get some lings to go with the hatchery. The chance of Boxer being able to rush was 1 out of 3. Either, Yellow is in the position, Boxer scouts, or he is in one of the 2 other positions, where the rush as boxer executed it will be too late. It would have been cheese, if boxer had scouted the first position, discovered nothing and then started rushing his scvs and marines to the middle of the map to get the jump on Yellow regardless, without any prior scouting information. The way it went, Boxer spotted a weakness and exploited it.
I agree with MrGreany and ComeToJesus. It's not like Boxer went straight for the rush and made a proxy barracks or something - he scouted and saw the late pool and then rushed. So it's entirely Yellow's fault for not changing his strategy after seeing that Boxer has better micro than him and he can't stop the rushes.
NC Yellow was traumatized after losing by a SCV rush once, the other two times was just nightmare for him all over again. He was afraid. Psychologically he already lost before anything began.
Boxer spplied a lot of Sun Tzu to innovate TvZ micro, whether he knew it or not. He's one of the legends, shaping how maps, tactics, and strategies in TvZ evolved.
Boxer simply timed his attacks perfectly with great micro, the maps and position had no effect, no matter what critism he recieves from these 3 matches, it will always stay in SC fans mind as genuis play.
korean are very technical on video games...it took only 16 mins to get the entire unit and build advance structure, its unbelievable...even in fighting games like tekken they are unreal...korean video gamers are highlevel
You read too much into it. SC is a culture over there, and what it takes to succeed, consistent trial by fire by those like you - are much more likely to happen in the SC environment over there. As for the other games, they aren't winning the actual games most of the world cares about more often, like Dota2 or things like that. Nope, there are far more elite players of video games elsewhere, just as often.
I used to play BW at decent level for years, starting back in 2000 until 2005, when i switched to DOTA, and from 2014 to DOTA 2, currently 4 k. I got nostalgic and recently installed BW Remastered just to see how it is. Although I can play DOTA all day long without feeling any fatigue, after one game of BW lasting 25 mins my hands were numb, my concentration was gone and I had a strange feeling of nausea, at 170 apm (and tvt). You draw the line by comparison, but you can count on the fingers of one hand the non-Korean BW players that could actually stand against a top Korean player (Grrr, NTT, Elky, Pj, Fisheye, Androide).
Damn, each time I watch this, my heart sinks for Yellow. The guy just got totally dominated. Yellow must've been like "OH, FOR FUCKS SAKE! I feel so bad for YellOw. Not only for this (I usually feel bad when I rush-win against my friends more than once in a row), but for him in general. Apparently, he has a ton of silvers, but no worldwide-class tourney wins, and has some angst over it. He's so good, but just can't come through at the end.

That's a good question. Maybe because the video is too old. If it helps, try changing your monitor's resolution on something low like 800x600 or 1024x768, it could help seeing the video a little bit clearer (I tried it myself and I am not sure whether it was different than on a higher resolution or not, but maybe it's worht a try). Best of luck! Many thanks to the person who uploaded the video!
I lost all respect for boxer in this event. Not just because of the 3 carefully measured out bunker rush, which I think it was a tactic to win, and I respect, but because of how Boxer acted after this, after the cost of breaking an honest, cool progamer(YellOw never quite regained his old, legendary form after this. I remember that he ran crying for an hour, stunned by this turn of events, then stumbled into a nearby internet cafe and wrote a post apologizing for his misconduct and failure to defend the cheese), but because Boxer went to the finals and LOST against iloveoov, and then he CRIED during the awards ceremony, where iloveoov was holding his interview.(iloveoov, when asked how he felt, looked at Boxer for a second and then said "not very good" It contrasts with YellOw's behavior shown in 2003 Olympus Starleague.) He basically declared that progamers could do anything for a win, but he became a hypocrite at the same tourney by getting butthurt over losing. Still a respectable man who pretty much gave his all for the StarCraft scene in Korea, and did so many things, but this event....
When zerg attempt a pool first, it usually means they're doing a zergling rush. If they aren't doing a zerg rush, they generally go for a fast expand. In this case, Yellow didn't expect boxer to attack so aggressively. For long games, having a fast expand as a zerg pays off well in the long run. However, the zerg player risks both his main's and his expansion's defense.
In BW Terran have a perfect countermeasures against guardins - upgraded goli and valks. And you're speaking about Boxer. He is infamous by his "Killing NNN guardians at once Vessels". He would easily destroy them with his micro. And every second of teching against Boxer - less inches between your base and his armada. Its a great risk teching so far without putting preassure.
If u read the description, all other builds except one that requires a pool before overlord would fail to this type of push because of boxer's perfect timing.
If you looked at his start, most of his drones were gone. At that point, I would say it's basically impossible to recover, especially considering Boxer's bunker rushes.
@BlanknWhite In Korea, Starcraft is included in pop culture. Elsewhere its a popular game that has a dwindling fanbase. So technically Korean pros are no less nerdier than our nerds. It's just they're alot more appreciated back at their country.
This has nothing to do with TvZ imbalance. This has to do with the Zerg not going for Zerglings fast enough as well as trying to exp far ahead of it's time.
Exactly. he should have done 9 pool or even 12 pool into expo. Or even at the very very least sent an extremely early scout to make sure it was damn safe to plant that natural expo.
Esto es una prueba de como se debe manejar con precisión la economía zerg. Slayer_ Boxer sabe como aprovechar el mal manejo desde la apretura, se nota que lo tiene bien estudiado.
in korea starcraft is one of the most prestigeous games, and you played all the way to the semis just to be beaten in your face, no strategic victories, no tactical movements, just right smack, GG
At one moment sunkens just died away before putting any heat in combat. At other Boxer didn't give any chance to start them. As I said - lucky to find Yellow 3 times in a row with first scouting. Looks like he didn't imagine that Boxer can be so lucky.
I noticed in the final matchup that boxers scvs made a wall next to the bunker. This was to prevent yellows lings from running past and attacking boxers base. That's the typical counter to this.
@coltin5 Yep. Nothing wrong with that though - that inspires a non-linear gameplay and it forces you to predict your opponent's moves. That essentially adds endless gameplay possibilities to the game. Whereas BroodWar forces you to use linear tactics which rely entirely on mechanical skills.
I haven't played this game for about 8 years, but I just got it again and want to learn it. I hope the micro is fun as warcraft 3, because there's no hero in this... I remember doing this terrain's strategy all the time: Build a couple barracks, get some marines and medics, and slowly push their base once you get some siege tanks. then later, you can get some goliaths or wraiths for aa, but maybe the strats have changed over the past few years. Who knows.
Pretty sure Flash was the only player to reach 70% win rate in ALL matchups. He had a higher overall win rate then Boxer ever had for 3 years in a row while also suffering from RSI in his wrist. Flash had a 75% overall win rate in the 2010 season. Please check it yourself if you don't believe me. Flash destroyed Boxer's records.
Yup, and the same trick would've worked 5~6 more times since his opponent wasn't bright enough to change his strategy after a 2nd lost to those bunker rushes.
Honestly, I wouldn't have thought anyone would have gone 12hatch after being hit with an aggressive bunker rush. An economic 12pool 14/15hatch would be a lot safer, since scouting time determines whether you place your second hatch or whether you make more lings and a colony.
Omg VIOLE, yes ! i remember this, watch it live !!! this was totally insane and sad too, i just remember Boxer in later interview per say , he even felt not very happy with this but just wanted to prove Terran were more than what they were , it was HUGE at the time , who even did this in Semi finals. like
Well, perhaps the years have changed but I remember getting bunkers and siege tanks and maybe air support. I know tanks/marines goliaths were always easy to push them with. You hit almost anything with that siege tank and it'll die. Warcraft, you hardly get any air support. Every race has their own "defense" like orc burrows, human call to arms, undead blight, and night elf moon wells. I think it's much more complicated.
enjoyed Warcraft 3. Also, you can compare the two games in some aspects. Take Moon, for example-he's one of the top players in the world at Warcraft. He also plays starcraft... he microes very well indeed and knows how to play the game.
A lot of people are saying that Yellow didn't expect Boxer to try the same strategy three times in a row, but doesn't he realize that Boxer's strategy is not independent but rather a function of Yellow's own opening? If he does 12 hatch every time, then Boxer will bunker rush every time. He should only expect Boxer to change the strategy if it didn't the first and second time.
It was said that july was boxers practice partner when he prepared for this semi finals. It's not like Boxer planned it like this, so it isn't much of a psychological thing, more a calculated risk.

If it helps, try changing your monitor's resolution on something low like 800x600 or 1024x768, it could help seeing the video a little bit clearer (I tried it myself and I am not sure whether it was different than on a higher resolution or not, but maybe it's worht a try). Best of luck!
Many thanks to the person who uploaded the video!
that blue pixel sure rekt the fuck out of that orange pixel
NoodleLu HAHAHAH BECUSE THE VIDEO IS IN LOW RES XDXDXDXDXDXDC
It's crazy how the meta game evolves. I seriously doubt 2006 boxer could beat me.
Verse BoxeR in 2006.
that may be possible, provided that you play much, much better than the two broodwar videos you have uploaded currently
This Game is from 2004.
'1' does '3' to '2'.
Nono 1 does 2 to 3
legendary series
The good ol days. -2020
황신 ㅠㅅㅠ....
However, the zerg player risks both his main's and his expansion's defense.
hard to stop boxer's bunker rush especially as zerg. He makes the mistake of fast expanding
If idra played zerg and met slayers boxer at starcraft 1, he would definitely stop playing starcraft, long hail the emperor

I TOLD YOU MAN
I TOLD YOU ABOUT BUNKERS!
Feel yellow's frustration with the look in his
face all three games. I mean jeez, that is tough
to stop! tsk tsk... manner boxer.
@BlanknWhite
In Korea, Starcraft is included in pop culture. Elsewhere its a popular game that has a dwindling fanbase. So technically Korean pros are no less nerdier than our nerds. It's just they're alot more appreciated back at their country.
Alexander chopping the Gordian knot right there.
This has nothing to do with TvZ imbalance. This has to do with the Zerg not going for Zerglings fast enough as well as trying to exp far ahead of it's time.
Not even BoxeR looked impressed with that set.
broodwar will always hold a place close to our hearts....
legend moment of starcraft
Exactly. he should have done 9 pool or even 12 pool into expo.
That's the typical counter to this.
i still remember at that time, this 8bb strategy to zerg is a bomb into the SC world!!
@coltin5
Yep. Nothing wrong with that though - that inspires a non-linear gameplay and it forces you to predict your opponent's moves. That essentially adds endless gameplay possibilities to the game.
Whereas BroodWar forces you to use linear tactics which rely entirely on mechanical skills.
well placed comsats and groups of m&m's destroy lurker rushes
Yellow has an amazing poker face
Flash destroyed Boxer's records.
if you don't know what im talking about, its at 14:30
Lol, I bet Yellow thinking, "Well, he already bunker rushed once, no way he'll do it again...shit."
Yup, and the same trick would've worked 5~6 more times since his opponent wasn't bright enough to change his strategy after a 2nd lost to those bunker rushes.
Lol @ 26:11 The ladies faces were like 'Seriously..he's fast expanding again, really?'
Honestly, I wouldn't have thought anyone would have gone 12hatch after being hit with an aggressive bunker rush. An economic 12pool 14/15hatch would be a lot safer, since scouting time determines whether you place your second hatch or whether you make more lings and a colony.
Omg VIOLE, yes ! i remember this, watch it live !!! this was totally insane and sad too, i just remember Boxer in later interview per say , he even felt not very happy with this but just wanted to prove Terran were more than what they were , it was HUGE at the time , who even did this in Semi finals. like
I like how boxer still wins the first game despite doing the bunker rush and not really killing all that much (though he did delay the expo)
pro drone from 14:35 to 14:38
hes just calmly walkin through them siege tanks
AND THE CROWD GOES WILD!!!
Yellow in 2nd game "since he rushed last game he wont rush again"
In 3rd game " He rushed two times now, im 99% sure hes not going to rush"
GG!!!
I'll remember your words in 50 years when we'll start playing Starcraft 6 or 7!! lol
🥸
Starcraft = Mental sport.
NFL & NBA = Physical sports.
Both are sports.
That's like saying Chess is a sport. They're competitive games, nothing more. Sports involves physical activity.
I think it's much more complicated.
the main core of games in korea is starcraft
Wow from the commentators views it looks like nothing much is going on but when they put it on boxers view I almost barfed..that's insane!!!
Keep in mind that the Terran player will also control his units. It's not as easy as you make it sound
lol look at the yellow-guy. He has that 'dude, I rock' expression
Didn't youtube mentioned somewhere "previously watched" after I already watched a video? I've seen this like 10 times and it didn't say I did. :(
dam....not once, or twice, BUT THREE bunker rush! crazy....boxer is a SC GOD
enjoyed Warcraft 3. Also, you can compare the two games in some aspects. Take Moon, for example-he's one of the top players in the world at Warcraft. He also plays starcraft... he microes very well indeed and knows how to play the game.
These games were played in 2004. Muta micro was first used professionally in 2006.
