honestly underrated aspect of this i havent heard anyone else mention: the game doesnt seem to allow for actual death. i havent played it, but from seeing this it seems like failure sends you back to a point without ever showing you a death screen or a jumpscare. i think the most horrific point in a horror game is when youre about to die, but once you die most of the tension is gone, and you remember that its just a game after reloading a save. this game manages to make the entire experience feel like those precious moments in other horror games where you're just about done but youre not out yet, stretched to a full hour, without any actual death happening, and thats amazing.

    • @zeebeeplayz

What disappoints me about this game is how its such a hit or miss, some parts like the "rainy downtown rundown motel" aspect of the graphics are amazing but then stuff like basically every jumpscare in the game and the final part of the game are rather bad. Most everything else though is fantastic.

    • @Exel3nce

yep, normally death would relieve you of the fear, making the horror obsolete, here tho, it lets you think you can die but if you truly cant, it feels like this game has a constant grip on you.

This was uniquely fantastic. It felt more like you just happened to be in a passively spooky area than a spooky place actively trying to kill you. I super appreciate a fellow developer who understands subtle movement. I'm currently creating a horror game as well, and things like the way the camera moves, the flashlight, even something small like the broken elevator door not being a boring linear movement, these are things I'm taking care to do as well and the From the Darkness developer seems to share that in common with me.
The quality of the assets as well.
This game looks a LOT like the kind of horror game I'm currently making.
Part of why this excites me is because Librarian is actually noticing the work that went in. Sometimes I'm unsure if all the detail I'm adding will be appreciated and if I should bother, so this is good.

    • @TheLibrarianYT
      @TheLibrarianYT  2 года назад +21

I think what helped this game was that there were a lot of subtly spooky things happening, and it doesn't FORCE you to notice all of them, it just knows you'll probably notice SOME of them. I think horror developers are often afraid to have truly subtle scares, since most players will miss them anyway. But those who DO notice will find them to be very memorable, and if you use enough of them, pretty much everyone will at least notice something. It even adds fuel for potential discussions. "Did you know that if you go in X room and look out the window, Y will happen?" "WHAT, I didn't even see that!"

There's always a chance no one will ever see your work or appreciate any of it. Just one of those things you have to accept as a creator. I've written a ton of books but only a few ever reached a wide audience but more importantly when it does reach the right audience who starts noticing the care you put into it a powerful fellowship forms.
I'm no JK Rowling, GRRM or Stephen King but my advice is create something you love and if you put enough love, care and work into it with a big spoonful of luck the right audience will find it.
Either way the only audience that truly matters is you, do what you've always wanted to see and let the cards fall as they may. So even if no one ever notices or enjoys it at least you made a game you can enjoy. Even after all this time I can still find myself reading my own books and enjoying them because I wrote them for me.

This game reminds me of something.
I live in that kind of flat and the moment in the late game when everything goes black and there is only the red light behind the windows reminded me about lonely winter nights, when your home is dark and there is only rusty red sky because of yellowish soviet-style lamps outside. It is creepy itself, but then suddenly someone called on the door and I was so scared. Turned out it was the police and they were seeking for the guy that lives upstairs. Damn, I felt every part of this video.
And yeah, the when there is no light on the floor (we call it podyezd or padik) it is scary because there could be anyone:a bum, junkie, burglar or the dude who has been kicked out by his wife or maybe there is no one and you just a paranoid guy

Its not crappy, it doesn't have a limited battery mechanic, and the beam is pretty decent. Still it doesn't make the game any less scary, but in fact introduces a new horror element of having to turn your only tool against the horror off to proceed

I grew to love how unapologetically cliche this was. The entire game is just 'but what if spooky thing happens?'. It doesn't even try to do more than that. It's like a genuinely great horror amusement park ride. All effort into making the scares speck clean, and none into being pretentious or pretending to be something it isn't.
P.S. to go against what I said, the one bit of lore this game has is that it seems to be an AU where the USSR never dissolved. Hence leading to it still being 'soviet' despite evidently taking place in 2021/22 (as the missing 15 year old was born 2005). For the same reason the phone country code is +81, which is currently used by Japan, but I assume would have been Soviet.

Damn do I appreciate this masterpiece.
It's not quite there for Silent Hill vibes, but wishlist every choice was made to ensure this is a top indie title. The scares were creative and executed well and the soundscape and light complimented them. The dev(s) even put in quirks like just stuffing multiple organs in one eye socket to avoid a custom animation and reflect the frustration of the protagonist (fully justified imo, I really liked that). The staring doll looking into one's soul made me want the possibility of pulling out both eyes.
The only thing this is missing is character (loose plot, soviet lifestyle only hinted at) and ofc better translations since there isn't even much text.

I consider this a masterclass of videogame horror. It may not be for everyone, but there’s a lot of thought and care that went into curating the terror this fills the player with. The way it plays with light and shadow reminds me of how it worked in Anatomy (seriously, those shadows are so dark). While similar to Anatomy for how it is a confined horror experience in the dark and you can’t die, this game has what Anatomy didnt: a monster. If Anatomy had a monster it would have been a different horror experience and honestly it wouldn’t have worked. For this game, though? Oh god does it work. It works way too well.

What scares the hell out of me are western style suburban mcmansions. True hellscapes surrounded with miles of identical steel and concrete while in a gilded cage with all services and shops requiring a vehicle to visit with endless lonely traffic both ways.

3:22 The paper on an elevator door you mistook for an "out of order" notice is actually just an ad for "Computer master" or "Computer professional". This types of ads were and still are common in some old soviet appartment buildings. Here's what it says:
    Computer Master
    -Reinstalling Windows
    -Virus deletion
    _programm installation
    -Cleaning PC from dust
And then there is a number to call the guy to do something from this list. The funniest thing to me is that the number on it is, in fact, not a russian phone number, although there was a russian phone number on the missing person poster

I feel like this apartment is possessed by an overly ambitious demon excited to show you his demo reel.
"Bro! Bro! Check out these spooks I've been cooking up in the lab! Satans gonna have to promote me after he sees this!"
I half expect him to give you a spooked survivor survey at the end like: "On a scale of 1-5 how creepy did you find the crying baby? Was the meat crunching elevator satisfyingly scary or was it too over the top? Would you recommend this haunted apartment to your friends or enemies?"
Like you're his test run for the real victim after.

scary... i usually watch this type of videos when it's night, with lights closed and hugging the cat.
sometimes i had to cover the screen of the phone because i feel afraid of what would happen while you had the flashlight closed

Don’t know if Librarian will see this, or if I should post it on his newest video, but he’s honestly one of the best horror RUclips’s I’ve seen, and a huge inspiration for starting my own horror game’s and maybe my own channel in a few years. I first found the channel around 8 months ago starting off with the Sears map from Gmod and binge watching those videos. I do love the commentary and analysis style of these videos. Anyways, if you see this Librarian, you’re doing a wonderful job at creating content.

lol this was a cool watch but I still am curious on people like you or others who will play this stuff,be scared but still play and enjoy it. years ago I played the first few fnaf games, a few creepy woods walks or moon horror games, I tried Amnesia once and uninstalled it an hour later haha. My main issue is anxiety, something I don't get from real life or watching horror movies or even watching others play games but actually playing them screws me up I can't play the game properly.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the light switch clicks out the audible SOS signal.
Doesn't translate into a proper light signal though, so someone outside probably won't figure that out.
