Fun story of TSA: One time, I left a laptop, a book, and some chargers in my bag, which doesn’t sound too bad, but when they scanned it, all they saw was electronic components, wires, and a large piece of insulation. You get the idea.

A friend of mine always got his luggage searched departing but not returning.
When he was departing , he neatly packed all his electronic stuff in a particular area of his luggage.
When he was returning, he often packed hurriedly and didn’t bother to make everything nice and neat and, well… suspicious-looking. He didn’t get searched nearly as much when he separated his electronics and didn’t wrap the cords as neatly as he was able to.

I’d say another way that vacations can suck is if you have that one party member who creates an itinerary of what you’re gonna be doing at every hour of every day of your vacation and they expect you to be able to both recite the schedule and adhere to it without question.

    • @honkgoth6712
      @honkgoth6712 10 месяцев назад +20

Facts. There's a delicate balance between feeling micro managed when you're supposed to be relaxing and having fun, or planning so little that you end up aimlessly wandering around a foreign country without any guidance. When planning these things, it's best that everyone involved has a say in what should be done as a group. Have some loose locations, restaurants, etc. that you wanna hit up, but plan ahead for some break time too. That way the group can follow a loose itinerary and gain expectations in how the trips gonna go ahead of time, while also having enough room to breathe and take everything in.
🤣 That is if things don't go tits up, as they usually do on vacation

Yeah fr, the best vacation I've ever gone on was one time my family just spent a week chilling at a resort up the coast. We had an event/activity to do every few days so we weren't just rotting, it was perfect.

    • @omnipi
      @omnipi 2 месяца назад +1

It’s super important that every travel group be in the same page about what kind of trip you’re going to have. Different expectations around how much planning to do, how much activity, how much to spend, what kinds of things to do or see, etc, can all ruin a vacation for all parties. Even how much luggage to bring can ruin a trip. And sometimes you’re in the mood for different types of trips - it’s not always just a fixed personality type. Critical to talk it out beforehand.

Best vacation we ever took was just driving to a town about 45 minutes away renting a hotel room in a nice hotel that had a small kitchenette and just chilling in the room most of the week. Went out to eat a couple of times at nice restaurants, to see a movie, and to the aquarium. But didn't have a schedule to follow, no stressing over entertainment, no rushing around to make it somewhere on time, and no worries for a whole week. Bought a stash of snacks and groceries to stock the room's mini fridge, the kitchenette had a microwave and small stove top too. We also had brought a couple of books, a deck of cards, and a couple of board games. This was a while back and in the off season, so rooms were between $50-75 depending on the day of the week for two queen size beds in a recently built hotel so everything was clean and new. It was so relaxing, and we weren't dead tired from traveling when we got home.

Me and my partner in crime have been doing this for years. Everyone else that I know at work who have condos and extra homes just always complain about their kids and jet lag after vacations. When I was growing up we were too poor to travel so, we just visited family an 8 hours drive away from home during the summers. I thought it was great. Everyone else visited Disney land or some expensive shit. I'm sure their parents reminded them daily of all the shit they bought for them constantly. The idea of a "vacation" is overrated to the point it's now just a circle jerk among other co-workers to see who can vacation better than everyone else

Travelling gives me energy that I never get on my normal days, it feels like a adventure because I dont stay on one place and do multiple activities. Staying at home is good but that makes life very boring. Also something peacefull when I am at a small airport makes me feel like a kid again like going into new things which feels exciting since staying home is just not that. But vacation isnt just all fun of course but if you know how to make fun then its priceless.

I Staycation. I go to local places here in West Virginia USA. We got beautiful vacations spots and the great thing is even if they are crowded, they are mostly out in the woods and people are spread out so that’s good.
Also, I hate the beach too.
Now, this thought always crosses my mind when thinking about vacation. My vacation spot it’s the place I like to go relax and have fun but for the people working there, the vendors and such, they are like “I hate these people and I hate this job!” It’s a weird place where happiness and soul crushing despair meet. That’s vacation

Either they will look at your passport and let you go with basically nothing said barre maybe sometimes a few basic questions, or there will be an insane line and you will enter basically an interrogation where you better be able to answer every minute detail of why you’re in whatever country and what you plan to do.

I worked at a Greek barbershop for five years where not only did we work sixty hours per week but also never went on vacation. Since vacations are more tiresome than working it never occurred to me to object to this policy. It helps when to have a job like barbering where you’re only busy half of the time and get to loaf in your barber chair between haircuts reading crappy paperbacks you got for 25 cents from the used book store across the alley.

We need to distinguish between “vacation” and “travel”. Travel is a transformative, unscripted, personal experience that few really experience. Vacation is basically another “pizza party” at your job - it’s a corporate perk, a specific commodity that’s parametrized and industrially output by the vacation-industrial-complex, where how “good” your vacation is is congruent to your job’s value. Think about how tightly integrated vacation is with work. It’s just part of your sad job, folks. This is to say nothing of how shrinkflation, TSA, and mass-production of the product (“vacation”) has ruined it, as this video explores.

When you get to Amsterdam, the FA tells you that if you ORIGINATED in ATL, you don't need your passport. Its the best thing Delta ever did.

5:45 I understand what he's getting at here, and its true for a lot of people - but there is some value in taking these kinds of pictures in moderation.
I take 'pointless' pictures here and there because it's almost like a form of documentation/journaling where I was at a certain point in time in my life - I do move all my digital photos to a drive and folder them by month/year, and I do look back on it since its so easily accessible - i've stuck to it with all my cameras/phones since 2011. I even backed up pictures taken from my DSi and two generations of iPod Touch.
I'm also guilty of taking pictures of aquarium fish/zoo animals/birds, but like... what else do you do other than look at fish? Taking pictures just kinda turns a 'look at this thing' attraction into a game - newer phone camera tech has allowed for better zooms/quality settings as well as slo-mo. So if you see my nerdy ass taking pictures of fish, it's cause I have free will and several terabytes of storage left on this photo drive for now!

I agree with him that travelling sucks.....while being completely aware of how good we have it compared to our ancestors who used covered wagons, horses and boats to travel. And had to somehow bring the horses with them on the boats when they travelled.
Lol we can just leave our cars at the airport and rent another one when we get there.

Ocean City is fun but only when you're a child who fixates on the Jolly Rogers parks, custard, and arcades.
Once you grow up you find a lot of the gimmicks of Ocean City can be enjoyed in a lot of other places, and there's raging conservatism in half of the boardwalk shops. It's so exhausting that I stopped letting my parents take me there.

I like to take a few pictures on vacations of things I like that I want to look back on but a few years ago I went on a 2-week long vacation with my roommate and her mom (awesome people) and they both take a million pictures and my roommate kept telling me to take more pictures as we were driving because I was the designated backseat baby and could move freely between both sides of the car (and we were regularly driving about 4 hours a day, we covered a LOT of ground) and my phone camera was better than hers but by about the 5th day of 14 I was already getting exhausted and ready to go home and she kept getting mad at me because I wasn't taking enough pictures. We also went to a Van Gogh Experience and she got mad at me there because I wasn't taking pictures and was actually trying to enjoy the exhibit. She is a cool person, she can just be a bit stubborn about some things, do not hate on her.

I so much appreciate living in Europe. By car i need 2h to the Netherlands, 3h Belgium, 4h France or Denmark, 6h Poland, Czech Republic, 8 hrs Swiss or Poland and 10h Italy. And you can easily avoid the tourist traps when you travel by car.

Hotels are great, but staying in hotels is awful. I took my first ever vacation last year for my 26th birthday (yes, first ever), sure it was only about a 2 1/2 hour's drive from where I live so it's not like I was halfway across the country but I couldn't sleep at all. Sleeping in a completely different environment wigs me out, as soon as I got in my hotel room and the door shut behind me, I kinda panicked as I realized that.

I'm only 3 hours away from Montreal and my brother wanted to show me the city cuz i had never left the country before when I went on vacation. The city is nice and all but he absolutely ruined it for me cuz I ended up spending $800 (Canadian dollars, so more like 650 in USD) for everything i got while there, mind you that was after going half on a rental car and hotels that we only spent 1 night in each! Needless to say he's not going to do that again cuz this past year when we went, I kept asking him what was free that we could go to and that annoyed the hell outta him each time I said that when he suggested a place.
Btw I'm only 25 and don't make much compared to him with him making almost 3 times what I make. I blew up on him at the border on the way back cuz he was making me angry with him saying I'm acting like an asshole the whole time simply cuz i didn’t want to spend the little money i make on some dumb shit i don't care about. He's my brother and I love him to death but goddamn man he has rich taste for someone who didn’t grow up rich and makes him act superior when he can spend money on shit that interests him but not me.

I do like traveling, but in the spontaneous ADHD-fuelled "oooh what's over there" kinda style where I dont have to think and plan first. My family, when they do travel, are IMMENSELY invested in writing an itinerary and planning and all that crap, and they had to learn to do that shit without me XD I don't want to contribute an opinion on a decision 8 months in advance, you guys have fun making your schedules and I'll follow you guys when it's done. If thinking *is* required for said travel, then I hate it and would rather do almost anything else.

Also: The anxiety, because you don't know wtf is going on 99% of the time anyway, and that percentage goes up steeply when you're on vacation and if it's a family vacation or you're a kid, you're stuck in the same hotel room as your entire family for a week or whatever,

I go camping in the mountains and that solves most of your problems. Travel is only 1-3 hours depending on where I go, no beaches, no people except for a friend or two. Just load some coolers with meat, veggies, beer and snacks, get a couple gas cans for the dirt bikes and some clothes, load the camper up and take off for a week or a weekend

My favorite vacation spot is Sapphire Valley-nice mountain hiking spot. (I live in Florida, so slopes are exciting)
One of my favorite restaurants ever is a place called Zookeeper Bistro. If you look at it from outside, it looks dingy. If you look at the menu, it seems super basic.
But then you get a basic meal, and you take a bite, and BOOM. Top tier cuisine. Mashed potatoes and a sandwich should not be able to compete with bigshot restaurants, especially since I don't even like mashed potatoes, but Zookeeper Bistro makes it out of passion and love and it's delicious.
