      I completely agree... With the acting and singing chops on both Jeremy Jordan (That man could turn me straight as a ruler) and Anna Kendrick (She could bend right back out of shape again), I could see this sung on an empty stage without losing any of the impact.... But somehow that just makes the visual choices here look even more masterful... I love the touch with the lighting and colour contrasts too, and also the detail with Cathy wearing the same clothes in the beginning of the song when they're so obviously in love and then at the end, when he's remembering how he used to see her... It really just makes it hit home that their relationship so much more fragile than they thought...

      Well, not really ...
      The last chord before the intro to Still Hurting was a G MAJOR 7th with G3 B3 D4 and F4 being played on the left hand, and F5 and D6 on the right hand ... The last note heard in the entire musical is a Bb3 ... So, no they are not the same note ...The note does exist in the last chord before Still Hurting, but it's a filler note ,the notes of focus are the G3 and D6 ... Cause they are the lowest and highest pitches heard ,all the in-between notes blend with each other to create harmony .The last chord before Cathy starts to sing is a C major , there's no Bb ... It's a nice though, but not true

      When the same melody is used through the film like that it's called a light motif. Broadway/musicals tend to lean into them a lot (Rent, for example, uses the melody of Seasons of Love throughout).

    whilst learning how to play this on piano i realized there was even musical subtext: cathy sings in the much more difficult (to play) key of B major, so that the key change brings jaime up to the much simpler C major. cathy puts herself through something much more difficult so that jaime can be in an easier spot.

      @@amandalovewell7573 I think an illuminating part of Cathy's character comes in Moving to Fast where Jaime says
      "Some people analyze ev'ry detail
      Some people stall when they can't see the trail
      Some people freeze out of fear that they'll fail
      But I keep rollin' on

      Some people never feel love in their heart

    Watching this as an adult, the thing that gets me the most is housing. Jamie left Cathy underwater in a home she has no chance of affording even with roommates. She is months to a year at most from being homeless, and saddled with the weight of 4 years of stuff, with money she cant even access because jamie closed the bank accounts. Loving someone at its most base level means not hurting them, even when its better to leave.

    I do love the very end with the slow zoom on Jamie's face. It's almost like he's seeing Cathy the same way the audience is, at the very start of their relationship (see the fact that he changed clothes and she didn't), and he's remembering just how much he loved her at the beginning of the relationship and the look on his face makes it obvious that either he wants it to go back to the beginning or he knows that Cathy still thinks their relationship is the way it was at the beginning (you never saw how far the cracks had opened) either way he looks entirely crushed at leaving her. Heartbreaking scene and brilliant symbolism!

Whether they were right is highly questionable, but Jamie did have some reason for being upset and unhappy. How he vented that feeling sucked, and in the end he could’ve said goodby to her better, but at the same time, would it have been better if he looked her in the eye and told her he didn’t love her anymore?

      Well in an interview with ET Canada, the interviewer said Anna and Jeremy admited that much of the singing was prerecorded.
      And during the interview, the two were joking about the fact that Les Misérables was mostly live. Anna said that while doing scenes in a convertible like in "I Could Do Better Than That" "it would make no sense to even try to record live sound." Anna went on to say she didn't want to play into the gimmick just to say they did the whole thing live.
      But in an interview with Fox 11 News, Jeremy didn't correct the interviews when they said the "singing throughout the whole movie live." It should be noted that that interview was derailed at times by the interviewers themselves. So it's safe to say that not all the songs were recorded live.

      I always looked at as this. Jamie and Cathy got on two different points in their career. While Jamie was breaking grounds. Cathy was still finding her niche. I never thought Cathy was jealous, more on the level of I am more than just his wife. And how Jamie wanted her to constantly go to interviews and basically be an aesthetic which is why she started questioning her role in his life. Jamie needed a partner to support and understand his career which is why most of the girls he cheated on were fans and why he eventually ended up with Alise, his editor. Things could have improved if Jamie had asked maybe not to give his wife the same questions or if Cathy had compromise.

    I think Jaimes part in the song just shows that he blames Cathy, that he couldnt do anything, despite Cathy always being there to support him he wants to give up and take an easy way out. Cathy is almost blindsighted as shes 'waiting for him til tomorrow' showing how she was there for him and he's just saying he couldn't do anymore, so by Cathy singing to him shes beckoning him to keep trying, especially when they sing directly at each other. I wonder if Cathy from the beginning is there to signify that he's trying to not feel guilty by saying their relationship was always doomed or perhaps that he 'still loves her'but he's only thinking of an early memory of her instead of facing thar he jasnt been there for the crushed Cathy now? Either way the songs so tragic and so symbolic beautiful full circle moment 😢

    • @DuetJay
      @DuetJay 6 лет назад +20

      I keep seeing comments to this effect, and I think it's a bit one-dimensional. Perhaps it's more clear in the stage show, but Jamie is also a sympathetic character. This isn't a simple matter of good-person-meets-bad-person. Jamie and Cathy are two basically decent people who weren't even close to right for each other. There are many reasons people cheat, and many of them are complex ones that defy a simple "You don't do that" analysis. And I say that as someone who has been cheated on.

    • @jackiep594
      @jackiep594 6 лет назад +33

      +DuetJay I appreciate your point but I disagree - Jamie's problem isn't his cheating it is his cowardice: coming to ohio when he intended to leave, leaving the letter when she knew how much the first hurt her. The problem is that Jamie saw Cathy as a character - she was this worshipful, exotic beauty who was defined by her moxie and primarily her love for him. Cathy allowed this letting her relationship validate her completely so when she didn't love up to either of their concepts - Jamie was disgusted and Cathy embittered. A terrible combination but what makes Jamie a tool is that he intentionally sought out a new partner who is literally defined by her lesser status ( one of the 'kids'). He's making sure never to be challenged again and I feel that he will play the magical clock ruse Every time he is required to depart from his fantasies. I think this is why this final scene is so stirring : he's seeing her for the first time outside of his narrative.

    • @jackiep594
      @jackiep594 6 лет назад +12

      +DuetJay Also textually Jamie is a jackass " I didn't see a way we both could win" is the truest statement he could make. At least in this rendition, I believe, Jamie would be hugely threatened by success. I don't think they would have made it five years if it was Jamie struggling because he would never get through even one party.

      @gdcruz7186 6 лет назад +12

      Angelisa Hassan I agree yes, they are both at fault. Jamie, on the other hand, is more at fault than Cathy. It was clear from A Miracle Would Happen that he was not ready to marry her. By then, it was obvious to see that he would eventually cheat on her. He also chose to be elsewhere than to spend time with his wife on her birthday, especially when they would rarely have the time for each other. Cathy would attend to all of his parties and the one time she didn't, he got upset. In addition, he never went to see her when it came to her performances. It was easy for him and he got away with everything, so it only makes sense that she becomes jealous. Questions of resentment and female independence in her career caused her that sense of jealousy as well. It's not like she was asking for him to stop pursuing his career. In a way, he was drifting himself from her by finding love within the arms of another. The whole situation is too complex to analyze, although their relationship was bound to end anyway.

    The first scene shows Cathy weeping as well as angry becuase Jamie was able to leave her without he rpermission. The end of the movie shows the opposite Jamie was a gifted person who developed a succesfull career. He seemed so in control of his faculties. However here we see that Jamie had faced the first threat to his ego. jamie is in his own mind in that scene and this is subtil. Jamie was not the good guy and adventurerer that he wanted to see himself to be, Jamie failed as a husband, he failed as a lover and he failed as her freind. Instead of conquering his personal life the way he had conquered his external world. Jamie was a coward. He rebelled in adultery. He brelled terms of her birthday. He ran away and had everything moved out before she got home from her birthday in Ohio. Worse yet, he has his love pack his things. Seriously was he too much of a wimp to pack his bags? How unconfortable was he making the new girl feel? This seems to set up his destined future cycle, He sees the ideal girl that he fell in love with. He knows that he has failed to love and you wonder if this is the rest of his life. Cathy will always wonder of the injustice. But as fate would have it he is punished by the haunting of her image the rest of his days

    Okay, to everyone, I should mention that Jamie, while him cheating wasn’t the right thing to do, Kathy (at least I’m the musical) got incredibly jealous of his career and every time she wasn’t casted she would take it personally and essentially go into a depressive state and Jamie would have a hard time dealing with that, and she also couldn’t handle not getting a callback so she would get so jealous of how happy and successful Jamie was at these parties and want to spend time with him which is why he says “I could never rescue you” because he knows how sad it made her when she didn’t get casted so he was trying to save her and make her believe in herself and her abilities (the song if I didn’t believe in you) and by the end he says that once he finds a single room of his heart she sends out battalions to destroy it which essentially means that she had to make sure she was the only one he focused on and I know cheating isn’t the right thing to do ever but from Jamie’s perspective, when at times she would literally become unresponsive and incredibly depressed, it would become too much. But there’s something to think on, hopefully this redeems Jamie in the slightest!

      Let's not forget that Jamie seemed to WANT to cheat on her long before he actually cheated. Also, as someone who almost never gets cast in anything, I understand Cathy's pain. It's not like she ever tried to sabotage Jamie. That would have been a different story.
