The Genius of Arcane's Action

  • Arcane has absolutely some of the best action sequences from any show I've watched. It is an absolute masterclass on how to tell a story through your action, rather than inject action into a story because audiences like seeing characters get punched. The development of characters (Vi, Jinx, Catelyn, Ekko, Jayce, etc...) and plotlines that occur throughout the fight scenes is simply superb. And it doesn't hurt that the style and creativity of the action are both phenomenal.

      @@o-wolfyea, I definitely don't, but I watched a video of a professional boxer going over arcane's fight scenes. It was awesome to see how he would break down the actual competent technique displayed in just about every scene. Basically his only complaint was Vi over commits and leaves herself open too much which honestly is just her character and she show has her punished for it on multiple occasions.
      I've said it before but I'll never stop saying it. A league of legends tv show had absolutely no right to be this good.

  • @cableman
    @cableman Год назад +260

    Two things I disagree with
    One, Jinx didn't blow herself up on the bridge because she is destructive and knew she would live. It was a suicidal resignation, she also remembered echo during the fight. She lost the fight and also lost the delusion that powder was gone, as she looked afraid and weak when echo beat her. That grenade could be viewed as Powder's last act before she was revived as Jinx.
    Two, Jayce has been shown throughout the show to be incredibly intelligent, absorbs info incredibly fast, and doesn't repeat mistakes. This is shown in the fight scene as to why he is able to fight.
    At 23:57 you see him get scratched and quickly finds the best solution from his position.
    At 23:00 he was attacked the same way as when he was scratched but he already thought of a way to dodge it and counterattack.
    It might not be much but it shows his intellect in a short fight scene and the rest of the fight shows his mastery of Hextech.

    • @Eilonwy95
      @Eilonwy95 Год назад +19

      I can definitely see that interpretation of Jinx blowing herself up. Fair point.
      With Jace, I think his intelligence does help explain why he is good in the fight, but you need more physical training as well to be a great fighter. Muscle memory is a big deal. I love the show and can totally get past Jace being a great fighter in the scene. There is at least some explanation, as you point out. It just isn’t as earned as say Vi or Jinx being skilled in a fight as they have clearly trained and done this a lot more than Jace.

    Saw this and realized, (at 7:30 in the vid) Vi screaming after defeating Sevika makes more sense when you see that no matter how many opponents Vi mows through, in every battle, both literal and metaphorical, she is always fighting an uphill battle, and then taken down by a bigger opponent just when she’s about to win. A lot of feelings in that scream.

    Caught something important. You mentioned at 22:00 "she didn't die, and maybe she knew it wouldn't kill her" but that was really the final act of "powder" before she fully became jinx. That was her "drowning" moment that silco told her about.
    The only reason she lived is because ekko hit the grenade away with the bat. (You hear it right before the explosion in the wide shot)
    And after this moment, she never has another powder "relapse" again.
    Even in the final tea party scene, she was testing Vi. She knew powder was long dead, she wanted to know if Vi would accept her as her sister, jinx. Not her sister, powder. VI, failed that test.

  • @remygallardo7364
    @remygallardo7364 11 месяцев назад +25

    I would say you nailed almost all of this except for saying that Vi was a bystander/had no role in the final conflict at the table. Her desperate pleading for Powder to win over Jinx served as an emotionally antagonistic destabilizing assault on Jinx's psyche. If Vi was truly just there as a witness then she wouldn't have been able to speak. Her direct actions, pleading with her sister, is what drove the conflict to its crescendo. Another layer of depth and weight, you might say. Psychological depth and complexity. We as an audience cheer for her because we see Powder still and are hoping for that heroic end where Vi manages to talk her sister into becoming Powder once more but by that point we've been shown plenty (more than the rule of 3s) that Powder's dead and has been for a long time, but objectively in that scenario Vi was only driving Jinx further to the brink and all it took was the click of a hammer for her to break, and Silco pulled the trigger.

Every single main aspect/character of this show has its parallel that moves beside it and undergoes the same events but changes so differently it's fascinating. It's a tale of two sisters, two friends, two technologies, and two cities. That parrallel story telling only highlights the best and worst parts of each characters personalities.

    24:27 This isn't a mistake. Deckard is shown to be animalistic in his style - he's not a _fighter_ , he's a _predatory creature_ . The stalking showcases this. Much like a great cat, he instinctively knows his strength is up close against a frantic, panicking opponent - he can't do any damage if his prey becomes startled too early, & runs.
    So much to say, but I have written enough essays about the *_absolute masterpiece_* that is *Arcane* . ( _I mean, even the greats miss here & there, but this show is truly a masterclass from the gods showing everyone our true potential in collaborative storytelling. From the art, the world building, the detail, the script, the handling of character growth & inner dialogue being_ shown _instead of_ told, _the fleshed out characters & the 'grayness' of their psychology, & the sincerity of their motivations, and how not a drop of paint, nor a word or sound, nor a movement is superfluous_ . *Arcane* is a rarity that aces every category in a truly remarkable way ).

    Great video but I want to see if I can propose some good reason for the villainous slow approaches.
    First when the shimmer fighters are approaching Jayce, I think it is reasonable they would slow down. Not necessarily, but easily rationalized. While they seem rather monstrous, people on shimmer are shown to retain at least some rational critical thought. And while they may be used to attacking normal people or aren't phased by it, they're looking at this strange clean guy holding a giant hammer that he can only wield due to anti gravity but they don't know that.
    They may be concerned what he is capable of, 'is he on shimmer?' 'what does that hammer do?' or even just 'that hammer looks like it would hurt...' Plus they had surprise and open spaces to their advantage against the soldiers.
    As for episode 3, the one shimmer kid had several reasons for the slow walk. Throughout the fight, he was taking it slow and was entirely confident he would win. Think back to when he catches Vi mid air without looking. Given their history and I recall him being spiteful, he may have been wanting to drag it out, enjoying seeing her crawl away. But once he sees her closing the door, he rushes.
    So yeah, is that me doing the writer's work for them? I don't think so, I think that's just figuring out what they are showing without telling, perhaps charitably if anything. None of this is to disagree with you either, just my perspective on such an exceptional show.

      Which is kind of the point. When we like something as a whole, we will search for meaning and explanation in every moment, even those that seem illogical. That's not wrong; it's just human nature.
      However, I would say that the creators of Arcane have earned the benefit of the doubt my making such a great show with so much meaningful detail packed in, which contributes to our willingness to come up with charitable explanations for potential inconsistencies or plot flaws. Just like any show isn't perfect, are perceptions of them are also flawed.

    Out of any fight I really wanna see in Season 2, It has got to be Vi versus Jinx not because of the choreography is gonna be great but because of the thematics. Season 1 ended with Jinx coming to terms with who she is and accepting that, by Season 2 she should be empowered and more malicious which is already added to her cunning and sadistic nature. Season 1 ended with Vi having to grasp with what her sister has become, and the rift that has been caused with her potentially killing her lover's mother, by Season 2 she should be angry enough to the point where she mentally separates Jinx from Powder, even though the point is that they are the same person. This will make it a lot less harder to actually fight her. On top of that, you have a fully powered up Shimmer Jinx that moves at inhuman speeds and Vi with her hextech Gautllets which can disintergrate bones.

    23:59 "Is that... fair? No, not really, but that's how humans work."
    I'd argue this is the only way it can be fair. Are regular customer discounts fair? Not to the person without one, but to the regular customer who earned it, they are. Except if we try to be fair and give them to both, then the regular customer didn't earn anything; is not getting what you earned fair? Saying we should treat those scenes the same way in both good movies and bad movies is like saying that we should treat someone sneaking a bottle of vodka into the building the same at a bar and at a kindergarten. You are confusing the equality of outcome - equity - with fairness, and there is no fairness in equity.
    It isn't bias to acknowledge something could've been better and accept it regardless because it doesn't impact the whole poorly.

    another theme that the actions scenes carry, is that they are trapping us. we are cheering and are hyped to see the action but always get a punch to the guts ourselves. every portrait of violence end with a harsh realisation of the consequences. people die or get hurt.

    EP7 "wow this looks so cool and the music is awesome" -- boom marcus dead, caitlyn hurt echo and jinx badly hurt.

    A DEFENSIVE MOVE, when one of the most defining character traits of Vi to that point is that her defense when fighting is WEAK.

    You know your stuff and how to break down stories and characters in a way that lets me understand them even better. And with so many good cuts in the editing ... really well done.
    I think that this series offers so much that could be analyzed but the fighting scenes are really the part where most of the story happens ... so yeah, good work catching onto that.
    Keep up this awesome work man it really gets me interested in all the future content you will release :)❤

    At 22:00, you mention that Jinx lives through the grenade blast, but possibly missed *why* she lived through it. Also why Ekko did. The only indication you get at the time is a sound cue - a very *sharp* sound cue, at that. Ekko batted the thing away from them both - further reinforcing 'The Boy Savior', even if that did save his own skin too. I missed the sound the first three times I watched the series, and it was brought to my attention in a comment on another video. I can't not hear it now. Jinx had no intention of surviving once she had that grenade in-hand.

      Lmao that was probly my comment, I was going round slapping in it the section of every single arcane related video because everyone kept saying Jinx was trying to kill Ekko in that scene (she wasn't) &that her survival was plot armour (it isn't)
      The fact that it ties DIRECTLY into Ekkos themes of being the one whos gifted at saving things/people vs Jinx being the one who is cursed to destroy people/things. coupled with his intrinsic bittersweet love for his first childhood crush..
      The fact he was fast enough to get clear &save his own skin &she knew it.. hence her rolling it out into the open so he could see &the anguished "let me go"" look she gave him as she does was just 😩

    My friend was so disappointed that Vi and Jinx didn’t have an epic showdown in S1.
    Onto the real comment, this show blew me away. I had heard that it was good, but I didn’t quite believe it until I watched it. When I was done, I showed it to my dad, who enjoyed it.
    The characters are written so well, and I’ve found myself looking at it as an example of how to write. So many little moments hurt, especially when you rewatch it.
    It’s a fantastic show, one that I can’t stop watching. Everything about it works.
    One of my favorite scenes is the flare scene. I remember watching in stunned silence as it played out.

    22:10 if you ask me, i think in that moment when she realised she hadnt lost everyone from her past and that echo still cared for her AND was seemingly about to stop fighting her and at least let her go terrified her because that meant facing the trauma and that she couldnt just childishly give up on reconciling with her sister and even worse than that, what if her sister NEVER betrayed her but she just never gave her the chance to explain ruining everything. out of that fear i believe is why she not only pulled that pin but almost made sure echo saw it in plenty of time so he could run cause she just wanted to die and wanted to at least give her friend a chance to live because she was too afraid of her will to live kicking in and stopping her from blowing herself up but we hear in the moment before the grenade explodes the sound of a metal bat hitting something else made of metal.... i believe that echo seeing and understanding what was going on in an instant hit the grenade away from her and i wouldnt be suprised if she even got in between him and the grenade terrified she would end up killing him when she meant to be the one to die there and the blast blew echo into the railing and off the bridge while jinx got blasted to the ground and nearly killed which is alongside his leg and his boards condition is why he didnt go back up outta fear that he would see jinx lying there dead...

      also when it came to jayce fighting with vi in the shimmer factory, if you ask me, the biggest part of why that happened the way it did is because it also wanted to show the sheer power of the hextech that even someone who has never fought can stand alongside seasoned warriors showing just how big of a power mix up in the world this will be when hextech starts spreading throughout the world even if EVEN THEN it is still unbelievable and too over the top admittedly in just how strong he is.

    Im surorieed you missed the subtext if the Ekko Jinx fught.. bot only did she DEFINITELY have no intentions of saving gerself that was a straight up suicide play.. its all in the look she gives Ekko that literally SCREAMS "let me go" she knows Ekko vetter than anyone &theyve obviously rangked before.. she knows hes the fasted kid in Zaun &would be able to get clear of the blast hence her pulling the pin &slowly rolli gbit out into the open givibg hin a chance ro get clear.. rather than clipping it to his belt or making it hard for him
    What she DOESNT account for is just how much Ekko actually loves her.. because if you listen REAL close he uses the time he could use to get ckewr if the bladt to slap it away from her (the sharp ping before the blast) but this ends up taking the killing brunt of the explosion off her &savibg her life but messing up his leg in the process

    The shield from the gauntlets also happens when Vi finally blocks with her hands (and not her face). It also makes sense as function of the gloves (designed for mining) that blocking your head it would create a shield to protect from a cave in / falling rocks.

    I agree with all of this and would add that regardless of how perfect something seems, a little hindsight can always elevate it further: They could've added even more to Deckard vs Vi Round 2 by having us watch the former's last bit of humanity fade during it. Rather than a simple, slow menacing walk, they could have had him hesitate. They could have shown him remembering how he got his ass kicked last time he tried this and psyching himself up by looking at his hands and reminding himself that he has Shimmer on his side now. And as he fully gives in to the violent tendencies, he finally loses that bit of hesitance and grabs Vi mid-jump.
    I want to follow up from my last comment by mentioning that I really, REALLY want Twisted Fate to be involved in Season 2. His powerset continues the theme of struggling against the inevitable, and...well, I'm on the Mr. Kiramman theory train. He's got the first name, he's got the beard style, he changed his last name to his wife's, and while Mrs. Kiramman is definitely the more important of the two in Piltover's government (...was. Was more important) hiding from a shady past is a classic reason to change one's surname. And attitude. He could totally still be a card shark in private. Which could even be why his wife became interested in him as they both would be skirting respectable behavior in their drive to make money.

    I love your analysis of the fights here, wish I got this video recommended way earlier but I'm glad I got to watch it now. I will say though, during the fight between Jinx and Ekko on the bridge I firmly believe Jinx made the split second decision to kill herself. It's actually kinda crazy because if you've ever noticed Jinx's eye color is different from Powder's, and you can see in that scene when she is looking up at Ekko while he is about to punch her but can't bring himself to her eyes go back to Powder's original eye color signifying that Powder was still somewhere in her psyche. It's really easy to miss but that subtle visual cue really shows the attention to detail the artists had with the show. Everything about that scene like the story telling between their past and present, with it taking place on the bridge where it all started, everything was framed as Powder's final moments. Like Silco said in an early scene, she needed to let Powder die.

    As one or two comments mention, a key part of the battle in episode 8 is that it shows that people on Shimmer are not a match for Hextech. It's not just plot armor protecting Jace, it's him winning by the strength of his technology. My only criticism of it would be that the shimmer goons kill the enforcers just a little too easily. But again that's to show that the undercity COULD win against the normal Piltover army, but can't beat Hextech.
    I would also add that I think the reason Vi even survives her fight with Sevika in episode 5 is that I think Sevika is just using her every day cyber arm, if that makes sense. She's not expecting to get in a massive brawl with one of the few people capable of beating her. Later on, she's wearing her fightin' arm! The normal one is good for playing cards and drinking, the second one we see is meant for killing people. It would make sense to have more than one. (Which makes me ponder, if she had a third one what would it be designed for? Doing the dishes? Petting puppies? Something X rated? We may never know.)
    Also, I like that Kaitlyn (Caitlyn?) shoots Sevika in the arm to save Vi. She could have just as easily killed her, but she's an enforcer and is trained to capture, not kill. It's all those little details that make it so amazing.

    Honestly I think the Jaycee fight makes sense and is reasonable. It is a viable strategy to pick off the weakest links first even with a heavy hitter, especially if you don't really have the range to deal with them. . I can also see why they'd slow down before attacking him. He did just go to town on a bunch of them at range, and this is a new strange weapon so it makes sense to feel out your opponent before you go in, even if you're not the most tactical minded. But it's been a while since I've seen it so take what I say with a grain of salt.

      Also the hammer he wields is something he first drew as a child (you see the cartoon hero drawing he made as a kid earlier but with even more accoutrements which will come later I imagine & turn him into the Jayce we know from the game)

    I disagree with one thing. The Ekko Jinx fight. She did spare him. Jinx she could’ve attached it anywhere to him. Instead she let him escape it and either gave up because Vi abandoned her again or it’s so important for her to be useful that she’d rather die too ensure she has the Crystal than fail Silco in this moment. IMHO I think she only believes her value is in her usefulness and and no one ever actually addresses any of her issues.

  • @HappyLittleBoozer
    @HappyLittleBoozer 11 месяцев назад +1

    6:22 "Running away doesn't exactly make for a particularly exciting action scene though."
    Hard disagree. It all entirely depends on how you pull it off and it's doubly funny to me considering you're saying it right after describing an good action scene that mainly didn't reach the peak of excitement due to it's shortness. That chase could have very well been developed into an adrenaline pumping sequence (though it'd meddle too much with what is a great piece of art so I'm glad it isn't). Point being, the visceral feeling of being a hair away from death is all the same in a fight and in a hopeless escape from one. You could really consider the act of escape as a variant of a fight in that regard, as instead of fighting the opponent's martial skills with our own, we're challenging their capacity to pursue with our speed and resourcefulness based on the terrain around us, the victory condition changing from being the last one standing to whether the distance reaches zero or the trail grows cold first.

    I had problems with arcane. Partially cause I'd go for a different route with jinx though this one does work. There are also moments like when young vi fights a bunch of men on a bridge. Yeah that was ridiculous. Then of course vi fights robot arm chick (who is so pointless she isn't even in the source marerial) and is on par with her but does worse in their second fight when she had upgrades and robot chick didn't. There are other problems but your point stands that the show tells story in the fight scenes. That is a good lesson all writers can learn.
