I was in the club at the US Navy base on Terminal Island in Long Beach, CA, one night when they were doing karaoke. Some folks got up and done some songs, and some were pretty good. There was a black girl named Mary who always hung out on the country music side and all the other girls started asking her to take the stage and she wouldn't do it. They kept on until she finally gave in. I felt so bad for her. I thought she was going to be horrible. She sang The Rose. There were a hundred battle hardened Jar Heads not many years past the Lebanon barracks bombing on their feet with tears in their eyes. Of course, there wasn't a dry eye in the club, my own included. I've never heard anything so beautifully done. There was no reason she couldn't have been a gozillionaire with a voice like that.

I ws pregnant w/my youngest son when the movis came out. I used to sit by the stereo when this played when he was kicking the tar out of me, and he would settle down. After his birth in Oct. 1980, he would immediately settle down when we played this-if a newborn can love a song -he did. When he was killed at age 17 by a driver running a light, we played it at his wake. I wish I could tell Bette Midler what an enormous effect her one song had on a young boy from the beginning to the end.

I cry when I listen to this song, cuz I have seen so much pain in the world. So many People have broken down in front of me and those who didn't I could still feel their pain. It hurts to know that there's so much pain in people's lives and that most of them have no one to really understand their pain.
