Remember to store self inflating pads inflated. If the inside foam is compressed for long periods of time it will not expand back as compared to when it was new. I've got a 20+ year old thermarest that still expands fully because I store it under a bed or behind a couch.

This is the same for sleeping bags too, you don't want to leave it crumpled up, that's just for transport.

Thanks for the video! I wasn't sure how to use my Big Agnes pump, so this video helped me understand. I think the pump you use holds a lot more air than the BA pump.

I have an old self-inflating foam pad but it no longer inflates by itself. Not only that, but the valves are copper - they look like the end of a garden hose. What can I use to fill this up with? I would like to avoid breathing into it for exactly the reason in the video - to avoid mold and mildew.

Hi, If it is an old Therm-a-rest with the metal valve, we suggest you contact Cascade Designs directly. For a long time, they could swap out the old metal valve for a newer plastic one. Their repair department is GREAT and they could tell you if your pad is able to be converted to one that accepts current pumps etc.
